It honestly REALLY depends on where you are in China and what you consider "rural". I lived in what Chinese considered a small town/village for a year but the average American would consider a small city. In China the mapping of districts generally goes province -> prefectures->counties. Any city, town or village will be considered separate from the county. Your pic related gives me 乡 vibes which is a village and the smallest subset of Chinese subdistricts. Any village that is smaller than a 乡 just gets categorized as part of the county as a whole. Keep in mind that there are a shit load of exceptions and other shit like 自治区 but I'm not going to get into that.
ANYWAYS. To answer your question. Does the average 乡 look like that? I'd say to some degree yes. Does the average rural town (镇,市,区)look like that? No. For example the Chinese town I lived in of Jianyang is quite nice, the nearby town of Wuyishan looks even more beautiful. Keep in mind that the government is actively encouraging people living in 乡s to move into the cities. A lot of these places are dying. Most people only go to them for Chinese new year to see their extended family. The young people will go to the cities to work and keep their children there to be brought up by their grandparents. The more successful ones buy a house in the city and take their entire family with them. Also keep in mind that a rural village in poor Guizhou and a village in rich Zhejiang are going to look quite different.
Hope your question was honest as I gave you a genuine answer.

Something I've always wondered about this "hey move into the cities everyone!!!!1!1!!!" policy of the Chinese government:
What the frick is going to happen in 10-20 years when all the old people are dead? Will the government suddenly realise they're agriculturally fricked then try to entice people to leave the cities? Or just apocalyptically expand cities further into the countryside?

Doubtful. Chinese agricultural output has doubled since 2000 and has gone up every year since the 1990s. There was also a video SCMP recently posted about millions of Chinese millennials trying to become farmers.

          > Chinese agricultural output has doubled since 2000 and has gone up every year since the 1990s
I’ve read this, that’s mainly due to newer techniques which are automated, as it stands less people have jobs in agriculture in China now then back in the 1990s. And this sorta fricked up the uighurs who’s main way of making money was by picking cotton.
Most millennials in China aren’t becoming farmers as the pay is way too little.

Contrary to popular belief, technical progress in agriculture hasn’t created enough job opportunities for Uyghurs, in fact, mechanized agriculture has squeezed Uyghur’s original living space to a certain extent. Incidence of poverty in the south poor regions including Aksu country, Kashgar, Hotan, and Kizilsu is still as high as 10.4% in 2018.[16] Drugs and HIV infection in South Xinjiang especially Kashgar are serious social problems. In addition, youth unemployment in south Xinjiang is much high, which leads to another social problem in inland developed cities, namely thief gangs.

Some elder Uyghurs once told me they were overwhelmed with longing for those good days before the 1980s. During the Communism’s era, the old labor-intensive agricultural models employed a large number of labor forces and ensure enough employment rates.

Accordingly, in marketing year (MY) 2018/19, the cotton planted area was expected to be about 1.17 million hectares in Uzbekistan,[17] while the cotton planted area of Aksu is 502,500 hectares. Roughly speaking, Aksu is a "half-Uzbekistan" by cotton planted area. According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of Uzbekistan, it was planned to attract more than 2.6 million people to pick cotton in 2018.[18] But the cotton harvest in Xinjiang is highly automated with very few job opportunities being created.

The main problem is the farming is too automated compared to other countries and this hurts village economies, forcing people to move into cities.

However automation can't solve everything, and the government will have to try and find a way to entice people back, the scmp video is sugarcoating it more people are leaving the profession and leaving the villages then going back to them.

You have an incredible potential to hit it big on youtube. Considering your past experiences, knowledge of topics poorly understood outside of China, your current location, and your clear understanding of the English language (are you an expat from US/Canada?) you could get pretty popular with minimal editing, networking, tik tok crap etc etc. You wouldn't become PewDiePie level famous, but you could get a professional-level job perhaps as a consultant for news organizations if you continued down the path.

My family is from rural China. It's dirty, smelly, and rudimentary. Water only flows at certain times of day. Manual flushing with squat toilets. Lots of subsistence living going on. Every morning they'd slaughter a pig for the village to eat. There's no work so the young people leave. Most if not all the rest are elderly collecting welfare checks and waiting to die. Low-cost apartments have sprung up in the past few years which means people like my grandpa don't need to live in brick-and-sticks homes. What else do you want to know. I'll just say it's an interesting experience to live but I wouldn't do it for more than 2-3 days maximum. This is especially the case if you are white and alone. crime is not really a thing but you'll stick out and it will be irritating to deal with at times.

I actually went to some of these in 2019.
Villages were mostly dead and quiet. However apparently since the scamdemic, many nongming (peasant people) went back to their villages as lockdowns made their life hell in cities. There might be more life now in villages; also e-businesses made many villagers stay there and just sell shit online.

Villages in northern China are ugly but they have a bit of everything you need. I had several lunches there, and restaurants are nowhere any worse than cities; food is fresh since it’s right next to the farms and fisheries.
I also enjoyed my time in said villages, very different from African villages. It’s extremely quiet, deserted, and only some old people remain. Again, things might have changed in the past 2 years.
I might go to China (under the condition they stop the daily test bullshit in the city I intend to go) this october. I’ll check these villages back.

I mean what do you expect? That place on the picture is just dusty, it looks like any small town in a non first world country. The material living conditions in some of the poorer areas of China probably aren't much different to some random African shithole, but unlike in the Sahel, they aren't worried about being overrun by islamuhst with machetes, and unlike Zimbabwe they aren't living in a place with a bazillion percent inflation and probably have a much nicer outlook for their children's and grandchildren's future, which I'm sure makes a huge difference. I once heard a guy say that he found the biggest difference when travelling to less developed countries wasn't so much exactly how much they have or didn't have, but rather if they believed that their country were on an overall positive trajectory and believed in a better future for their offspring, and I think to a large degree that holds true.

Also it's a fricking huge country. Not trying to do that 'America is a third world country with a Gucci belt' bullshit, but even in America I'm sure you can find some places in like rural Nevada or whatever that are almost as bad.

It’s because people online like to overhype the country. And honestly I thought that the real poor towns and villages in China still had sidewalks and looked clean, not in a state of disrepair.

Like most of these small towns could be fixed with a little renovation, cleaning up the road and making things look a little tidy and neat, and painting the road lanes and sidewalks in white instead of having none at all.

Well what the frick did you expect from a former hardcore commie country led by Mao that never saw proper development until the last 30 years?
Their development went so fast that they didn’t have time to focus on villages, all the attention went to cities. This is North China for you. If you want idyllic rural China, you need to go southern. North China is an agricultural powerhouse for China but it looks like shit.

At least the roads connecting these villages are decent enough.

          > Well what the frick did you expect from a former hardcore commie country
The ussr went on a building spree developing even remote towns in bumfrick nowhere, I thought China was the same.

Yeah there’s a building spree too in bigger villages too. These are absolute small villages.
It’s not rare to see shitty pseudo-commie blocks in the countryside, in fact it’s extremely common. These blocks are often the result of “evictions” you see online.
Dusty villages are usually the smaller ones, with barely more than 2000 inhabitants. I mean this is China with 1.4 billion, scale works a bit differently there.

If you actually went to a remote small town in Nevada (like Battle Mountain or Ely) you would see that they have paved roads, normal flush toilets, and traffic lights.

This is about as remote as it gets in the continental US btw.

that is probably the highway that runs through the town. it just does that here. not that they couldnt have reduced it for the in town section. many towns in the us do that even if they are kind of a pit stop on a major highway.

        >as remote as it gets
Have you even been to us? The Midwest has tons of wide open spaces more remote than this. Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc all have massive forests with no one around for miles. Same shit in northern remote Washington, Montana, or basically anywhere in the Dakotas. There’s also tons of incredibly remote non populated areas in Texas and New Mexico.

It's not the same. Northern NV is something else. I've been all over the country and that area is just downright creepy. You can drive for hours without seeing another person, a car, a cow, anything that reminds you that you are on the goddamn earth. You drive through towns that still look like people live there. Pictures on the wall of diner, a hotel you can walk up to the front desk. But nobody's there. Just ghosts.

      >but even in America I'm sure you can find some places in like rural Nevada or whatever that are almost as bad.
No, this is something you just don't understand. A country like China is GENUINELY poor. A country like the US makes roads, buildings, street lamps, signs, etc. all up to safety standards. A black person is free to desecrate that and damage it and piss on it, but it's still very blatantly there under all the trash, just fricked with.
OP's image is showing a LACK of said amenities, because a country like China is just too poor to even make them in the first place in certain areas. And this isn't some private little lot where the owner can have his restaurant or whatever be paved with just dirt which of course is common anywhere. This is an entire market, and they have nothing. You do not find this in America, you just don't.

No, I wouldn’t say China is poor. They can turn this village into paradise if they wanted to.
Villages (not in mountains ans autonomous regions, different issue) are like that because they are deserted and nobody gives a frick about these places. When China politically shifted in the 80s, these villages were suddenly deserted leaving behind only old retired people and children. Once the children grow up in the 90s and 00s, they too, moved to bigger towns and cities.
These villages are half-abandoned, that’s what it is. But they do have plentiful of food, have access of ok to decent infrastructure (always a decent road nearby somewhere), and have basic amenities like water and electricity and some schools.

Villages in mountains and autonomous areas are different and there is a reason why the CCP uses these types of villages for propaganda, as they are truly isolated and poor.

False, as stated previously the Russian government renovated all their towns in the middle of nowhere that no one gave a frick about, because they had the allocated money to do so. China does not have the allocated money. You can be a trillionaire and renovate a town to be paradise, any nation can do that, but you can't do it to all of them if you're poor because you'll run out of money and that money is better allocated elsewhere.

            Anonymous

There are many, many towns renovated with these ugly commie blocks a bit everywhere as well. Hop on a train and you can see these in the middle of nowhere. Doesn’t mean it has to be everywhere. And like I said, scales work differently in China; 1.4 billion of people is a lot. Not even a China shill, I shit on Xi for various reasons btw.

Why should they invest in semi-dead villages, especially if real estate is partially private? They often evict and do a joint construction in places that are crossways of several villages; relocating many of the villagers in these blocks.

Your last statement is only true if you hang around shit hole cities exclusively, as Chinamen are wont to do.
I agree the situation across the western world is bad. Very few of us can compare these days to what we were, and to a large extent our countries have become nothing more than weak, rootless people squatting in the remains of the greatest civilisation of recorded history.
But just because the west is on a downward arc, that doesn't mean that China is not shit right now nor that China has the ability and character to ever stop being shit.

Yeah lol I didn't check the thread before now and people really got mad. To be fair I was probably wrong, I've never been to the US and as you say rural Appalachia is likely a better example. I picked Nevada because I read about some hiker who went to some shitholes there to resupply and said it was some of the shittiest places he had ever been, literal tweaker towns full of meth and despair. I think one of them was Searchlight. Also the US has fricking trailer parks. But of course the US is generally much richer.

That guy is talking out of his ass, There are a lot of very rural villages in the US and Canada that don't even have running water or electricity. He won't tell you that however because most of these towns are populated by natives and he probably doesn't consider them human. Most other white and black poor people moved to the cities to massively shit up the cities who now all have massive homeless people problems.

GO to any majority native area and you can see how bad things really are and in how much poverty many of them live. Of course the type of poverty NA has doesn't exist anywhere else in the western world but that is a different point.
