When I was having mental health issues a few summers ago I packed up a tent, sleeping bag and a few other necessities and went to Colorado and camped on random mountain passes with only my dog. So basically just gas and food. It was awesome and honestly might do it again for longer next time.

Went on a camping trip paying for nothing but toll roads, petrol and some bottled water.
But I suppose this is more for an overseas kinda deal which I've never tried.

No, it is for any vacation. Domestic or international.
      How did you eat?

There is walking because you want to, and walking because you have to.

Probably the time my bank fricked me out of a usable card while in Japan, basically had to walk and use bus systems to get back to tokyo and even to my plane. Had about 1000 USD for 50 or so days, sounds like a fair bit but making that shit last was a bit of a challenge.

kek I spent less there and did it intentionally
Similarly I ditched the JR Pass meme and used private railway passes and highway buses since they worked out much cheaper. Walked everywhere, spent two weeks in a "hostel" with no showers on the property and subsisted on a diet of gyudon and soda.
      Was a blast still

Hitchhiked from the Arizona to guatamala without a passport.

Crossed into Mexico with 100$ to my name. Slept on the side of the roads and occasionally was invited in by locals to stay the night.
People who would pick me up hitchhiking would just assumed I had nothing and would buy me food and or just give me money.

Ended up crossing on a raft into Guatemala from Mexico in Tapachula Chiapas for 25 pesos.

With low calorie intake you can eat cheaply.
    Foods expiring are on discount
Fresh bread sold late in the afternoon example at tesco on Uk is often half price.
In Uk there is often a basics line of food that is cheaper and less tasty they have hummus usually.
If you have a steady location and aren’t moving around much dried grains and beans can be very cheap per meal. If more temporary there are tinned foods the beans but also protein- however these will be high in salt if it is your main food source for a while.
depending where you are some restaurants can have cheap meals - like some 3rd world country could be very cheap but back to Uk a fish and chip shop to splurge on a hot meal chips should be cheap, but rather than getting a normal fish you can buy something shifty like a fish cake( they are not like the nice ones in USA)

I've done a lot of couchsurfing holidays. Sometimes got bicycles from my host, too. So then I spent like 20usd per day on food, most of which was to cook something for my host for dinner.

I flew from the southern US to Cancun for 1 week and it costed me about $150 in early June of 2015. The airfare was free since I flew in on a buddy pass (paid about $50 in taxes though). Once I got to Cancun it was around 6:00 PM local time and was able to hitch a ride with someone going to a different jobsite for work in exchange for $10, dude was a contractor or construction worker IDK. He was pretty chill and spoke some English. I got dropped off by the Occidental Hotel and was essentially a beach bum. I bought street food at a little inflated price since I'm white and they wanted to skim some off of the top but it was w/e. I spent the most money on liquor. The Occidental had bathrooms with little showers in them that was meant for guests to clean off the saltwater + sand and I was able to just walk in and use them b/c I acted like I belonged and gave some tips to security and concierge. They either didn't know I wasn't a guest or didn't care because I didn't linger.

Out of the 7 days I spent in Cancun I only slept outside for 5 days. My strategy was to linger around the non-enclosed/private hotel beaches with liquor and strike up conversations with other people on vacation. I hit it off on my 4th day there with a college chick from Jacksonville and got to spend the night + shower in her room and I got "lucky" again on night 6 with a heavier woman in her 40s from some bum-frick ass midwestern state but at this point I was tired and wanted a bed.

When all was said and done I spent the rest of my money on a taxi back to the airport after another bum shower with the little soaps + hotel bottles I swiped from carts and some deodorant I brought with me and flew home.

Only risk involved was typically the Police / Marines walking the beach would wake you if you were sleeping and tell you to go back to your room thinking you were some dumb drunk and passed out tourist. I just moved around and went to sleep when they left.
