I'm French and I'm from Paris, so I thought myself immune to the Paris syndrome as I thought I was a realist when it came to big cities being shit.

But Seattle broke me. Not because of its crime, but because of its truly depressing absence of soul. It is a city of 40 something year old engineers that thought they could enjoy the vibes but ended up with just each other and the shitty weather. The people are as depressing as the weather. When all the adventure and magic disappears into the routine of a life that has nothing to it besides its permanently steady state of going to work as an engineer, going back home to a sexless households with annoying fricking kids 'till the day you die. No hustle, no fun, no nothing. The only exciting thing there is shooting yourself in the head

          >seattle is an absolute sausage fest
          >In the city the population was spread out, with 15.6% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 38.6% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.8 males.

You realize this counts geriatrics, and the female life expectancy in the US is about 5 years longer than it is for men?
Also, you realize that when people say that a "city has no women", what they actually mean is that the women in a specific socio-economic class of a certain age and attractiveness level is relatively low compared to the men with those qualities?

Lovely cities are the ones where the experience of living there is pleasing. 1. Seemed somewhat immune to US cultural imperialism. Unlike the rest of the world's bland, sterilized cities. I'm a proud American, but am sick of seeing American culture everywhere I go.

Anyone saying Paris is crap usually doesn't know much about travel in general.*

Paris is a place where people do not give a frick about you because they don't have to. Service workers and workers in general have relatively better rights than in most anglo-saxon countries. So no fake smiles nor outstanding service, especially since the tip isn't expected (and isn't high in general). The customer may be king, but the French have a history of beheading nobility.

The general populace knows better than to interact with you because interactions in a world class city aren't you do unless you want to create some rapport that will later aid in scamming you. Other interactions include sexual harassment, panhandling, and so on. A Parisian not talking to you is a Parisian that means you no harm. This is also true of bigger cities such as NYC, LA, etc.

Paris was and still is a capital of the arts. Paintings, sculptures, opera, drama, gastronomy, this is what you're looking for in Paris. You go there with your girlfriend, you take a nice appartment near the Seine and take the bateau-mouche. There's no way you won't enjoy yourself if you focus on the following. I really don't get what the frick you guys do in Paris. Talk to people ? lmao

          >anyone saying paris is crap usually doesn't know much about travel in general
Anyone who has actually seen the rest of the country knows why Paris is absolute dogshit. Paris cannot hold a candle to the Riviera, nor can it compete with Bordeaux or the charms of any of its smaller towns like Colmar or Saint Emilion. It's got good food, a few landmarks to check off a list and that's it. Hell, even the best part of Paris is it's least Parisian section at Mont martre
          >just take your gf to babys first international vacation and enjoy because she won't know any better
          pleb
          >you talk to people when you travel?
          You don't?
          >you won't get outstanding service because service workers have better rights
This makes me want to say you've never been to Paris. Their mentality is to not bother you, not to provide shit service. They'll actually be knowledgeable about their menu and make good recommendations, they just won't lord over you every two minutes like in America. The whole "french = shit restaurant and cafe service" meme is almost a dead giveaway that the poster has never actually been to france.

          >Virtue signaling this hard on an anonymous Bhutanese Basket-Weaving board
Are you legitimately ignorant, or are you just willfully refusing to acknowledge the reality in which you live? Many states, California the undisputed ur-example, have fricking *ruined* themselves by falling into the trap that there's a point that you'll have finally thrown enough money at this issue to make it go away.
          >invest in wellness programs and affordable housing
Cool. Who pays for this shit? I ask because I have zero fricking interest in doing so, and most functional, contributing members of society feel the exact same way as I do, hence the mass exodus from socialist dystopias like California; it would be fair and appropriate to say that California and israelite York are hemorrhaging population at this point.

Social assistance and welfare initiatives are meant to be short-term solutions, not lifestyles indulged in indefinitely, and states where tent cities full of mentally ill bums is the norm, probably shouldn't be giving handouts to and rolling the red carpet out for """""refugees""""" or """""migrants""""" or """""undocumented citizens."""""

Stop making excuses for people who refuse to even try to help themselves, and would rather just prey on the good nature of others. Compassion and empathy are essential to any functional society, but so is some measure, some semblance, some standard of personal accountability, which blue states simply do not have...

Which would be fine if you c**ts would have the integrity lay in the beds you've made, rather than try to relocate to different states so you can ruin them, too, but that's not the case.

My entire family including me experienced the exact same as your wife when we want to Los Angeles for our west coast trip of the US. (we're from euro country)
We were expecting a big bustling city where trends were started such as hippie-surfer culture, the Hollywood walk of fame. I expected it to be luxurious, sorta like Geneva, Nice and Monaco. I expected people to be insanely rich and that it'd show throughout the city. I expected creativity.

Instead I got four days of the shittiest, dirtiest, most disgusting place I've ever been to. I've been to developing countries but none of the countries were as dirty as Los Angeles. Addicts 'n hobos galore. Dirty junk everywhere. Everything was overpriced. Felt unsafe everywhere as well.
Venice beach was so fricking dirty, my god. Seriously, poor Turkish beaches with the fraction of the GDP of LA look ten times better. French beaches that you people would classify as "shitty" looked like paradise in comparison.

After that we drove to Las Vegas. That was so much better.
It was like an opposite Paris Syndrome, I was expecting some run-down city filled with criminals, hobos and shitty casinos.
Instead I got the strip that was kept clean with lots of activities to do. Felt safe as well.
I get that it might be shit outside the strip but it was so refreshening.

LA is one of the dirtiest and most dysfunctional cities in the US. I reckon its probably not too far off from Manila. Venice is also known to be one of the dirties and most vagrant infested places in the area, its known as a place to go if you want to see some shit happening but unlike a lot of California, Venice has kind of always been this way. One of the issues is so cal is very gimmicky and a lot of the places that show as "must do" tourist attractions are actually terrible, example- the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Don't even bother.

I've been to LA and Manila for at least a week each in the last three years, and you wanna know some truly tragic shit? LA is significantly worse than Manila.

One of my friends from europe says the wealth disparity is much more obvious here. Switzerland looks well maintained even in the poor areas. Mexico kind of looks like shit all over. But the US and California specifically has parts that look like Mexico and parts that look like Monaco within a few miles from each other.

Expected a nice little city full of beautiful historical buildings. All I got was run-down buildings and streets filled with gang of arabs and africans, staring holes into my neck when I went for a stroll late at night.

    Stonewall.
My lesbian friend and I went to see stonewall because its part of gay history or something. It was just an overpriced, poorly managed bar. It isn't the worst case of Paris Syndrome in this thread, but it was pretty disappointing:
    >Clean, but really run down. A fresh coat of paint is really needed, as are some cosmetic repairs to the floors and bathrooms
    >Most bars offer free water, especially if you are drunk. SW charged $5/bottle with no tap option.
    >Bar space is very limited
    >Gimmicky performances to bring in crowds distracts heavily from the history of the bar
    >Drinks are fairly priced... for a tourist bar, but not for a gay bar.
    >They had some cool stuff on the wall (like the original raid paperwork), but it was too dark to see it and too crowded to read it
    >Plaques and displays were very difficult to read. You can't print in black ink in a dark club and put it on the wall without giving the display a light
    >Short staffed, hard to get a drink. 2 bartenders per floor on a crowded weekend night during pride during tourist season is very understaffed
    >bottom floor is a dive bar, top floor is a party bar, which is a nice touch
    >Dance floor on the bottom floor is way too small. They also have a covered pool table that seems to never actually be used
    >They won't let you count a $30 T-shirt towards the two drink minimum. I've never seen that before in any bar.
    >No POS system between floors, you cannot open a tab on the bottom floor and keep it running at the top floor, it is almost like two separate bars
It is not the worst bar I have been to, but it is fricking Stonewall, it is a world famous gay bar. I really expected better

I'm from PA and philadelphia is really really shit. it's legitimately probably one of the most dangerous cities to visit in the USA because the crime doesn't just happen in "bad areas" (like Chicago) and it's not infrequent (like NYC), it's frequent and it's in "good" residential neighborhoods. Muggings, murders, rapes, shootings, all in nice areas. Philly is probably the one city I felt legitimately unsafe in, I feel pity for the tourists who someone end up in that place. It's genuinely grim, run down, dirty as frick, dangerous and yet still ridiculously expensive.

        Pittsburgh any different?

          Anonymous

Yes, it's night and day different. Pittsburgh is safe, generally clean, affordable, and lots of nice neighborhoods/attractions. Philly and Pittsburgh are not remotely comparable, there's a giant culture difference between the two places as well. Western PA is unlike the rest of PA and culturally unlike anywhere else in the country except perhaps the Cleveland area.

I'm from PGH so I'm biased but the pros are:
          - extraordinarily affordable for the northeast
          - good public transportation, low traffic
          - good cultural, sport and artistic attractions like opera, theater, symphonies, ballet, concerts, etc.
          - good nightlife, lots of diverse dense neighborhoods with different cultures, bikeable/walkable
          - close to DC, NYC and Chicago by plane or train
          - thriving economy, low crime, lots of local universities and jobs
          - rich history and heritage sites from back to 1600s
          - excellent schools, good place to raise a family
          - good outdoor options if you're into that

          Cons
          - not nearly as big as the "big" northeast cities, doesn't have the same immigrant draw as philly, nyc, boston, etc.
          - women have a bit of an "uncultured" edge
          - large drinking culture
          - absolutely awful weather, brutally cold, wet, rainy, ice, snowy, slushy winters from november to may with no sun and constant grey skies, intense 90F heat with miserable 70% humidity during the summer. This tends to be intense culture shock for transplants
          - "rust belt" infrastructure (lead pipes, heavy air pollution still, old housing, bad roads)
          - basically zero immigrant communities, entire population is black and white people who have been here for 100 years
          - lack of proximity to oceans or beaches

We don't get a lot of tourists or transplants here which is surprising because the quality of life is very high, IMO, much much higher than philly. Fine by me, seems the tech asians and indians are terrified of the cold and so they stay away in general.

Interesting. My mom began planning a trip there soon after I mentioned in an offhand comment that there were Croats there, supposedly. Thing is, my parents are real Croats, like FOBs who came here after the war, and my offhand comment was based off Wikipedia numbers, which probably include white people who have been here for 100 years as you mentioned. I can't imagine any places in America with actual sizable diaspora communities of our people, all those seem to exist in Europe. Regardless I grew up in a place where the local diaspora community consisted of like 4 families so I understand my parents jumping at that info.

Anyway, this trip also serves as a scouting trip for a place for my sister to live after she graduates, so it sounds like Pittsburgh is a great candidate in that regard. Any things you recommend doing on a weekend trip there? Me and my sis might hit up some nightlife to get a feel, any good spots I should know?

              Anonymous

Yeah PGH has a sizeable Eastern Euro diaspora for the steel industry, we still have Ukrainian and Serbian and Hungarian and Polish food festivals here. In fact the national Croatian credit union in the USA is headquartered in Pittsburgh. There's Croat clubs and singing societies here so I'm sure you could find something.

A weekend trip? I'd say come in the Fall around October, not too hot or cold yet. Do the major tourist stuff, obviously take the inclines up Mt. Washington for the views. See if you can do an Oktoberfest brewery tour, there's a lot of good microbreweries here. Maybe go the National Aviary, or Phipps, see the Cathedral of Learning/Heinz Chapel, take a tour of the Nationality Rooms. Go to Point State Park, see the fountain, walk along the Riverwalk down the Allegheny. Go to the Carnegie Museum of Art, or the Andy Warhol.

For clubs? Cavo on Penn Ave in the Strip, Tequila Cowboy in the North Shore (there's quite a bit along Federal Street -> walk across the Roberto Clemente bridge to the Theatre District for more upscale stuff). The big club scene is along Carson (Jimmy D's, Diesel, Carson City). You can also walk along Butler through Upper/Lower Lawrenceville, lots of stuff there, some very good smaller bars on the sidestreets. Pittsburgh is more "dive bar/college bar" than club, it's not like Philly in that regard but you do have some options. There's a dive bar on every street corner practically. I recommend Gene's in South Oakland for the true slum student college experience.

Good lesser known restaurants I recommend are Ritter's on Baum Blvd. in the East End/Garfield, Huszar on the North Side, Big Jim's in Greenfield, Mineo's for pizza, Nadine's in Southside Slopes, Triangle Subs in Etna. Stop in La Poblanita in Coraopolis if you're driving in from airport, it's not that far of a detour and is exceptional Mexican, same as the best I had anywhere in Texas.

            >extraordinarily affordable for the northeast

Im a bit weird I guess, I quite liked Philly and was pleasently surprised when I went in 2019 for a couple of days. Granted, I was born and raised in Chicago, so keep that in mind, because thats what I liked about Philly- it reminded me of a smaller version of Chicago from maybe 20 years ago. It seems like all the gentrification bypassed Philly for nearby NYC and the city still reminds me of how inner cities in this country used to be 20 to 30 years ago, kind of a relic of pre-Gentrification urban USA in modern times. You would walk through an old Italian neighborhood of row houses and you could tell you were still in a real, blue collar community where families have owned those homes for decades and look out for one another, like the old Rocky movies or again, like how cities like Chicago used to be 20 to 30 years ago. No stupid cup cake or flower shops or meme axe-throwing bars, just communities of people with their family owned diners, bars or bodegas. Had a nice charm to it. The city was also extremely walkable, had great home-made style food, good subway/public transit, lots of history, good nightlife, down to Earth people and a decent little thriving downtown core that was even busy at night. Is it first on my list of places to revisit? No. But I appreciated it while I was there for my few days. Ignore the haters, Philly is cool.

Beijing is one of the worst cities in China. It's comparatively cold, spread out, and much more of a police state.

There's lots of great cities in China (granted you like the kind of stuff that Chinese cities can give you). However, beijing is the kind of place that you're best off just visiting once for the main tourist attractions and never going back.

One thing it does have over other Chinese cities is that it's comparatively clean, but why the frick would you go to China if you want clean cities.

If you go to China for the tier 1 cities, just go somewhere that is the same thing but better like Taipei or Singapore.

Saigon has all that stuff you listed and then some outside of District 1. You just have to not be a fatass though and learn to walk a lot and explore. Some of the most beautiful Mahayana Buddhist temples Ive ever seen. Only thing missing that holds the city back is currently no public transit like the MRT/BTS style railways to get around the city like in Bangkok, but this is being constructed though and will hopefully finish some time soon. Not only that, but if more people ride the rail when it opens it will also reduce the amount of motobike traffic which admittedly is absolutely insane at the moment. Saigon is a city that currently makes you work to appreciate it, whether finding new sights to explore or finding food to eat, its one of the few places on the planet that filters out all the instagram selfie generation of travelers and still has an "authentic", off the beaten path, old world charm to it outside of the District 1 containment zone. The new subway will be both a blessing and a curse when it opens for the reasons I listed above, so enjoy the city's ruggedness while you still can.

The people in the Starbucks made conversation and asked all about ourselves and then the one Barista told me he put an extra shot of espresso in the coffee "just for me" and then winked. Then when we were looking for an ATM to pay to fix our broken bike chain this random stranger in the street started walking around the neighbourhood trying to find my brother to try and tell him where the ATM was he'd gone looking for. This is my first night in Berlin, only here for a concert then I am fricking off the day after tomorrow. I semi enjoyed Oktoberfest in Munich a few years ago, I have seen other parts of Germany too. Berlin is filthy and smelly, like Bangkok. The hipster trash and women are Melbourne tier in the worst ways possible. And strangely I feel unsafe walking around, and I have never felt unsafe in any city I have ever visited.

Heh. Reminds me of the time some tourist asked me what there is to do in my city. I couldn't think of a single thing, at least for a tourist. I also hated every single other German city I ever visited.

If you can believe it I found Guadalajara and the surrounding areas bland and a sea of brown and grey concrete buildings with faded coca-cola signs out front. I mean like the whole city other than the soulless "hip" parts of town. The ladies are nice, but that was mostly because I'm white, blue eyes and have a job. I was doing muh ESL down there and was hoping it would be more soulful, but like I'm finding more and more there really are very few places in the world that are even worth their own piss. Maybe traveling has reached it's logical conclusion.

    Nottingham.

Expected a nice little city full of beautiful historical buildings. All I got was run-down buildings and streets filled with gang of arabs and africans, staring holes into my neck when I went for a stroll late at night.

Basically it was the same as any other city in western Europe, could have just stayed in Sweden. At least the train ride there offered some neat sights.

Can't tell if bait. Of course people from Ireland dont care about being Irish it's normal to them, it's not special or unique, they dont need to delineate themselves in a country of mutts like Americans do. They are irish, most other people around them are Irish. They are happy and have a booming tech and banking industry. They are doing better than most Brits.

Yep. Ireland has been poor for basically all of history. And it's just even more annoying for them because for a few centuries there, they lived right next to the richest country on earth but they were still poor. In a single generation, all that foreign tax haven money transformed their economy and they haven't had it so good for so long that they are looking their gift horse in the mouth.

Its hilarious thinking about some autistic American who is way to into his potato famine family history showing up at some rural irish pub in the town his great great great grand parents immigrated from and he just starts trying to talk shit about British people to the few old farmers and tradesmen who are just trying to enjoy a beer. The whole time the barman is probably english and everyone just stars at him as the spaghetti falls out of his pocket.

He then gets back from his "heritage" trip and makes a seething post on an Alaskan moose hunting forum about how real people from Ireland arent real Irish and dont hate their neighbors enough.

As for Paris syndrome, i havent had it because when ive never seen anything as bad as all the horror stories of napoli, paris etc set me up for. If anything I found Turin to be depressing dull and bleak with zero life or pedestrians.

Not related to the place itself, but last time I was in Madrid, I managed to go out to dinner with 3 girls and I had sex to one of them. Paris. Stinky Black folk trying to push trinkets on me. Overcrowded with degenerates. No place to sit. Shitty service. It was the death of big cities for me. Same goes for istanbul but with a lot more scams and pickpocket. Cuba post January 1st 2021. Once they got rid of the CUC, one of the dual currency for tourists that everyone used that was tied to USD price, it all went to shit.
Now all they have is their worthless cuban pesos and no one wants it since you can't buy exported things with it and can't convert it into other currencies. The infrastructure is still based on the old currency so the prices are all fricked and everyone is in a confused daze typing on 1970's calculators.

This means that you can pretty much only buy things with CAD, EURO or Pounds that you bring in with you, and the local are desperate to take it from you. God forbid you run out because then you can pretty much do nothing.

you see, that kind of insult sounds nice on paper but its utterly meaningless. as someone who has visited north korea and seen and participated in a lot of discussions about it, these are based on common things people often say.

so your assertion that i made these up is baseless and factually wrong. and yes, i won the so called arguments. not really surprisingly since i have more information, facts, and first hand experience.

you didnt think that insult out though. you just saw someone else use it and thought it was a good retort, so you tried to use it yourself without thinking about the context or application. its like you saw someone blow on a trumpet and thought you could be a musician by blowing on your violin.

the most fundamental mismatching of basic information and logic. you are quite low on the intellectual ladder. but we all knew that the moment you decided to defend moronic and baseless clickbait, fear-mongering, hyperbole.

    What. The. Fricking frick.
    Barcelona. Barcelona. BARCELONA.
    Barcelona is the Spanish Paris.

    - besides tourists, the local population seems to be a mixture of Africans, Gypsies, Latin Americans, Africans, Latin Americans, Africans and Africans. It's one of the least 'native' cities I ever visited
    - I saw people doing hard drugs on the open street, for the first time in my life, in a side street in El Raval
    - Many obviously illegal immigrants begging, scamming, with a very aggressive attitude towards tourists who are seen as cashcows
    - most of the city is just Spanish commieblocks. Twenty meters from the beach - commieblocks. Historical architecture in Spain is great, but they've yet to figure to build anything other than commieblocks in the modern era
    - I mentioned the beach: it's nothing special. Small, crowded and full of African scammer salesmen
    - The nice parts of Barcelona are fine, yeah. In the bad parts ... you forget you're in Europe in the first place. It's run-down, smelly and full of nonwhites

I realize it boils down to a /misc/-tier REEEE IMMIGRANTS rant, but they really, really, REALLY ruined Barcelona for me, as the city got nothing but the absolute worse sort, and in shocking quantities.

And surprise, surprise, they're all shit and only getting worse. As someone who grew up in a large Western city and loved cities growing up (and still do), these days the only cities worth even visiting now are those in Asia like Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Bangkok, Singapore, Saigon, etc. And to a lesser extent, Eastern Europe. Western cities suck ass these days.

My point is stop being a b***h and just say it. Immigrants frick up white countries, especially Black folk and other assorted mudskins.

Cartagena, Colombia. first world prices in a third world shithole. no running hot water. Prostitutes want $50 USD to frick where you can get better looking ones for $15 in Bogota. cant even relax on the beach without 47 locals trying to sell you an hour of speaker time, sunglasses, shitty israeliteelry, etc. Hotel tried to ban me from bringing prostitutes back to my room. How is Ft Lauderdale? I heard they banned spring breakers or some shit, which is based imo. I've always wanted to live in South Florida in a place like Port St Lucie but it seems like there's a trillion Black folk and hispanics down there.

Yea so basically the biggest most posh club in the city banned zoomies thanks to their severe moronation. And it's not just drunk guys fighting. The Wharf is where some chick literally dug in her pussy and squirted all on the dance floor and subsequently got kicked out, here's the video

        https://imgur.io/BlQa965

Basically Fort Lauderdale is the Miami for upper middle class white people who don't feel like getting shot on South Beach. It's majority white while Miami is majority Hispanic, black and israeli. bawds in booty shorts and crop tops visit from all over the country. There will be at least 3 separate bachelorette party bawd groups as well as 3 separate "birthday girl" groups wearing sashes and veils and shit for attention, wandering around the clubs on weekends looking for alpha male dick. If you find a bawd visiting for the weekend, you can 100% frick her in her hotel room with zero need for a financial or time investment ie dinner or coffee date beforehand. There's a big dark alleyway that separates the nightclubs and you can just go behind a dumpster and frick a club rat there. Anytime some flyover homosexual shit talks florida, I let them know the women from their cold ass landlocked state come hire and give up their pussy, throat, & butthole for free
        >Port St. Lucie

I'd be happy to move to a place with no culture except for a bigass Walmart Tbh. I can travel if I want to experience cool shit, I want my home to be boring, nondescript, and safe as frick. Don't know if I'll find that in SoFla but Citrus county looks pretty white according to some maps.

Brooksville is based (although a lot more redneck than it seems on google maps) or townhouses outside Gainesville. Living in a college town has its own separate subculture of perks and cons. UF is the school that all mid class mid intelligence kids go because their parents went or they wanted a more "namebrand" School that isn't the local Uni like USF, UCF, FGCU.

I had this happen with Paris. Admittedly I went during a very quiet period of the year, in December a week before Christmas (or so I thought), and my girlfriend, while an Italian, speaks very good French because of her degree. I really liked the city and would like to come back. The only time I felt like there were too many people was when I went up to Sacre-Coeur. I walked everywhere as well and my hotel was 40 mins from the city center on foot and I never felt threatened. Then again I am built like a shit brickhouse, so experience can vary.

I have enjoyed reading the replies. Good stuff everyone. I remember going to Seattle as a kid about 25 years ago (old gay here) and having a sauced up vigrant ask my very white-collar family if we knew where he could score cocaine. Hilarious, but even then it seemed like a dirty city. Reading it has also gotten even worse (Probably still not as bad as Portland.)

For me though my answer is Tampa Bay. Know this is not a place you'd visit anyways but I was in Florida and had a day to kill. Felt completely safe, but this is the most soulless city by far I've ever seen. There is pretty much no downtown. They plopped every single touristy restaurant on a condensed street near the harbor and it looks generic and like complete shit and the "cool" neighborhoods that were listed consisted of one block with maybe one hipster looking place, surrounded by check cashing stores. Tampa Bay makes Orlando look like a mecca. (Non-Disney Orlando is actually extremely underrated, you just have to know where to go) Tampa's inky saving grace is the areas just outside the city like St. Petersburg (Go there immediately if in area, no need to see TB) and the old cigar town of Ybor City are kino as frick.

Reverse Paris-syndrome on Oaxaca, Mexico. Little city that I had no expectations for when we were visiting a college friend teaching English, but this super old and poor city had about the most soul of anywhere I've ever seen. Beautiful vibrant colored buildings, nearby Aztec ruins, the home of Mezcal with great tours of the process, unique skull designs which the entire world has tried to copy, and just very last and chill people who are friendly and seem to respect the Gringo. Loved it, nearby Puebla was also fantastic with some of the best old architecture I've ever seen.

Kosice, Slovakia which even you guys might not have heard of is extremely nice, but I've gotten long-winded enough here.

Toronto is a case of reverse Paris IMO

When I hear Canadians talk about it they talk about it like it's some third world country because of all the subhuman third worlders or whatever.

    >Fly in, huge airport
    >DIY customs in like 20 languages processing huge volumes of people pretty quickly
    >Answer a couple questions and the guy just waves me through
    >Rail link to the airport, not crowded
    >Get out into a huge neoclassical station that has like 7 transportation network links
    >Walk to subway without leaving the building
    >Subway is new, high capacity heavy rail with the engine under the cars, comes every couple min
    >Walk into the hotel lobby (still haven't gone outside yet)
    >Check in
    >Look out my hotel window, high rises everywhere, looks like Manhattan
    >Go outside to walk around
    >Temperature is comfortably warm (this is in September)
    >There are new light rail trams cruising around on every other street, no busses downtown
    >There are enormous open spaces by the waterfront/CN tower
    >Besides the high rises it's medium density ground level retail with tons of small shops, they have their own local Toronto chains instead of major/national chains as far as I can tell
    >Neighborhoods have their own vibe/character
    >Dive bars, upscale bars, everything in between
    >Friendly people who will help you with directions or finding stuff, distinct lack of American tier obesity
    >Everyone looks different, very multicultural city but not really in a ghetto way. Hear Italian, French, Spanish, Chinese, etc.
    >See some homeless people but they aren't approaching people or making a disturbance, just laying there sleeping
    >They don't have any "wow" attractions other than the CN tower but it seems comfy enough
    >Walk around at 1am, it's dead but also don't feel unsafe.
    >Go visit someone, they drive me home on their downtown expressway. Has an absolutely beautiful skyline at night and looks incredible when going 100+km/h past all the lit up highrises.

    Portland Oregon.

I have never seen more homeless drug addicts in my entire life, and I lived in San Francisco for a year. Downtown Portland looked like an outdoor drug market. Hundreds of addicts were just wandering around the waterfront looking for drugs. There were people wasted and passed out on every inch of grass. I couldn't believe how bad it was. This was in 2018 before the Antifa/BLM riots destroyed downtown. I can't imagine what it looks like now. We had homeless people camped out on the sidewalk in a suburban neighborhood in front of our Airbnb. It was the first time I have ever seen that in a US city.

With that said, the Oregon coastline is gorgeous in the summer. And the Columbia Rover Gorge had some of the best waterfalls Ive ever seen. But I will never visit Portland again in my life.

lol when I was 19 I spontaneously bought a ticket to London to be my first time leaving the Americas and the first day was awful. The immigration officer thought I was an overstay risk so badgered me about my money and asked what my parents did and I said my father is dead, and she immediately let me go ahead.

Then at the train station, the casher handed me the little card chip reader that the US didn't have until 2018 and I'm like wtf do I do with this and she facepalmed right there.

Then I just autistically walked in circles around Victoria station because I didn't want to talk to any of the taxi drivers but I had no phone service and no idea how to get to my hotel. Then I paid like 30GBP to get the 10mi to my hotel and that was day 1. I ended up liking the city but yeah, rough first day truly travelling

Kyoto. Seemed like my ideal Japanese city to visit on paper, in practice it was absurdly crowded with groups of school children and chinese "people".

Wonder if it would be more enjoyable now that they're walled off but of course I can't find out for that very reason.
I'm not gonna go with a tour group.

Yeah I've heard Kyoto is chock full of chinkies. Dunno why they specifically decide to visit Kyoto en masse at all times of the year, but they do.

So how bad are chinkies anyway? I haven't done much traveling so I haven't seen their hordes. The old stereotype used to be that they like to take pictures of everything and wear fanny packs. But I've heard that nowadays they're disgusting, push everyone out of their way, destroy things, spit everywhere, and are loud and obnoxious.

It's nice, but even with only domestic tourism is still packed. The public transit is shit by jap standards, and the busses are stuffed beyond capacity and usually late. The temples are cool, but get boring after a few days. Worth visiting for a few days, but no more.

Kyoto to me is worth one day. I posted this in another thread, it was one of the least inspiring Japanese cities I visited. Pick 2 temples in Kyoto you want to see and spend the morning at one and the afternoon at another. Then go back to Osaka which is 10 times more interesting.

There's a ton more temples and palaces and shit in Kyoto but they're kind of all the same so pick the ones that you think are the most interesting to you and if you don't follow the religious aspect of it or care that much about Japan's history 800 years ago, Kyoto isn't actually that interesting.

        Anonymous

This is true. For example all review aggregators reflect this. There's clusters in 5(or 10) and 1 when rating, but there is an abyss between those numbers, especially in the 3(or 5), which would be 'average' and would fit most places/things/products. On booking.com I'd rate a lot of places 5/10 because they are mediocre, but in real life terms it actually means it is closer to 1/10 because how averages work. People have no idea how to rate places numerically, less so in words, so either something is the best thing evur while overlooking all kinds of negatives, or a complete shithole where only negatives are fixated on and none of the positive or interesting things are brought up at all.

Yep this. I only use reviews to see pictures, to have a small idea. Nothing more. Never read reviews.
