      The Eldorado for business.
Fun as frick, it was the wild west, you could get away for a lot of stupid fun shit and nobody gave a frick. People didn’t give a shit about anything you say, they weren’t as sensitive as today.
Things weren’t as sterile. People were definitely less bugmen back then.

      >Fun as frick, it was the wild west

you see, I'm no pajeet, talking from experience.....

Went to the shaolin temple for a scam course with my wushu gym group back in 2004
      Two things caught my attention
-Poverty. Remember that this was rural China back in 2004. A lot of chinese around there never saw wester guy before. Some places didnt even have electricity or phones
      -And this
LOTS and I mean, LOTS of barber shops and shitty rural bars that at night were small brothels. But they werent cute at all, ugly rice farmers. I was underage (17) back then so my Shifu didnt allow me to try them, but that shit woke my fricking yellow fever later.

Yeah but back then was blatantly obvious. Now the CCP has cameras even in the poorest rural towns.
Btw one of the guys who went to that trip (but not in my group) killed two prostitutes years later (now in prison)

Good for them I guess, probably less of that
            >One of the guys who went to that trip (but not in my group) killed two prostitutes years later (now in prison)
happening now. Dear Lord. Do you know why?

You mean THE Shaolin Temple in Henan or one of those other temples in Fujian most kung fu schools go to?

Most villages didn't have roads to them, just trails big enough for a motorbike. Cars were a luxury only driven by the mega wealthy. No electricity or running water outside of the towns. None of the super-expressways or highspeed rail existed yet. Government officials were extremely corrupt and you could talk your way out of anything with the right bribe. Most people outside of Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou had never seen a white person you could literally draw a crowd just by walking down the street. Whole villages would come out to greet you. Brothels were everywhere and prime pussy was cheap. None of the big brother mass surveillance bullshit they have now. Basically the wild west. Sad that it's all gone.

      Isn't Cambodia like this today?

      >What was China like in the early 2000s?
Full of moronic expats who would constantly complain about how the rules were never enforced

Similar, but it's not the same. Having been to both in the early 2000s I'd say China was far more enjoyable and somehow less of a shithole even while it was still developing. Less western influence as well and not much in the way of sexpats.

Actually what you described was more of the 90s. By the early 00s many villages in the main provinces have basic roads and electricity, and cars weren’t strictly for the super rich but rather for the first successful “self made” business owners. They all had the same black Audi. Still had to shit in a hole inside a shed though. (I was mainly in Beijing, Hebei, Shandong)
Then you could enjoy a barbecue on the road in fricking Beijing. The cars dodged you as you enjoy your grilled lamb skewers prepared by Uyghurs while sitting on these folding stools.
The beaches had improvised restaurants inside tents. Your feet were digging through the sand under the table as you eat.
I remember an old French dude said to me back then “enjoy this very moment, one day all of this will disappear”. He was right.
Damn it I miss those days.

Ah, see I was more in the south which took longer to get those kinds of amenities. I remember the black Audis very well although there were relatively few of them where I was. Those and the crappy little vans they did tours in. You can still find street bbq in many 2nd and 3rd tier cities to this day, while they seem to have almost completely disappeared from the 1st tier ones like Beijing. 90s China was probably even more kino.

The wild west, from what i hear.
You could get away with a lot, still can but it is a lot stricter nowadays.

Like literally everywhere in the world, it was more fun. The internetization of everything has been a disaster for the human race.

(I'm sure if they were honest, the aznidentitycel types crowing about how much easier it is for Asian governments to specifically keep a leash on Westerners in their countries now and stop them from enjoying the 90s party lifestyle in the same way, would have to concede that their own lives are more stressful and annoying now too than they used to be, and for ultimately the same reason. Even if Asians arguably "enjoyed" lives of stress, conformity and misery back then too, it's certainly not any easier now.)

i used to travel to shanghai quite frequently for work around that time
the pace of development was insane. i saw a news report that said half of all the tower cranes in the world were in china at that time and i can easily believe it.
i almost always stayed in the same hotel and from the high floors you could see the edge of the city and you could almost see it changing week by week. if you looked at a certain area, one week it would be a muddy swamp, next week it would be covered in cranes, next week it would be brand new tower blocks
life was cheap- many of the construction workers were almost slave labour who came to the city to work and loads were killed
there was also insane corruption, corner cutting etc- so lots of those new buildings are what they call "tofu dregs"- a lot of them won't last very long
i haven't been for a few years and when i see pictures of shanghai now it is almost unrecognisable from that time so clearly the pace didn't let up for a few years

      >there was also insane corruption
      >was
That hasn't gone anywhere. It's just changed form to be less openly blatant. Chinese corruption is built so deeply into the system it will never go away.

I went to Shenzhen in the 90s, it was touted for being a 'Special Economic Zone', basically among the best China had to offer. Place was crawling with beggars around the border area. There we caught a chartered coach to take us to a 'folk village', a kind of traditional theme park. Don't remember anything else, it was so long ago.
Changed so fast, I kinda wish it hadn't developed so damned quickly. Maybe Vietnam and Cambodia are only places like this now?

When I went to Shanghai in 2005, I rode their brand new maglev train from the airport. I remember thinking, 'wtf, why doesn't it go all the way to the city?'
I went back in 2013, and the mag lev terminal was a station on a large subway network that had been built.

2005 uighur street bbq where the skewers were old bicycle spokes. Good times.
