No, it didn't. It changed the media landscape overnight, but if you didn't look to television as a guide to reality then nothing changed.

I was 13 when it happened and we were cracking jokes about it AS we watched the towers collapse live because they rolled a TV into the classroom.

Then a week later we had to write essays pretending to have been gravely shook by the incident

        >How did this ruin traveling?

Took the excitement and adventure out of traveling, made things too transparent and less exoric. Yes it made things easier and convenient but also too accessible and simple for hordes of people and morons, which made travel feel more like just being shepherded around like cattle. Everywhere was overcrowded and overpriced and full of scams.

        >how does this affect future travel?
Well where do I begin? For starters were still seeing the effects of airline vaccine mandates that made us lose a bunch of airline staff and is causing tons of delays and cancellations. Next you have places like Germany, Ireland and Hawaii calling for a return to mask mandates in the Fall already. Japan and China are still largely closed off with no hint of full reopenings any time soon. Canada is talking about a mandatory jab every 9 months just to travel or do anything really starting in the Fall. Media still refuses to let COVID grow, latest dose of fear coming from a new strain currently out of India. So yeah, things seem decent now, certainly not great, but theres already grumbling from around the world of various returns to mandates of different forms. Travel is still not out of the woods yet.

          >also too accessible and simple for hordes of people and morons

Cant say it was just smart phones causing that, but also peoples disposable incomes grew since the 90s , also people using more credit cards, and overall population growth. Ironiclally the only thing that can solve this increasing flight prices to 6,000 dollar round trip international flights at economy class, you kill the demand places become less overfilled with poor gays and morons

Traveling needs to go back go being elite and seldom activity

            >The number of air passengers tripled between the 1970s and 2011.

            >In 1974, it was illegal for an airline to charge less than $1,442 in inflation-adjusted dollars for a flight between New York City and Los Angeles. On Kayak, just now, I found one for $278.

Chill the frick down. I never said to skip famous places. I have nothing against mainstream places; in fact, many of the main cities are must-do. You cannot skip the Louvre if you love art. However, before 2015, you didn't have to queue for hours to get in and I certainly don't want to queue for hours to get in as time is very precious.
There are ways to get in without queueing, obviously (you need to time well, and the museum opens until 10pm few times a week so you need to check these), but overtourism really, truly made many places not as pleasant as before and basically had to make me change the way I plan my trips.
Same thing; in 2014, I did many things in Vienna on a whim without any planning, including trying the meme cake (Sacher), and when I came back in 2019, it was impossible as the queues were unbearable.
Things have changed, there are more and more people congregating to the same places, and as it's becoming unbearable, I have shifted my focus on places outside of main cities, and it's quite refreshing, really.

And there are many amazing places with almost zero tourists, as soon as you get out of easily accessible places.

                Anonymous

In Italy if you exit the really obvious touristic spots, especially within the really big, obvious cities, you pretty much only have Italians. Random small to medium sized towns have all the squares, churches and art that you'd typically associate with Italy, minus all the obnoxious groups of Chinese photo-tours and other nonsense. But you need to learn a bit of the language, you won't have any luck ordering anything in English in those places. Honestly, I prefer it that way. Most of the times people from those places can appreciate an idiot foreigner trying to learn a few phrases, even if they have no idea about the grammar and their pronunciation could be much improved.

You can no longer do these kinda of "get on a bus, go to a city, have a great time" trips

Want to go to the Tower of London? Queue for 90mins+. Coliseum? 90 minutes+. Top of the Eiffel Tower? You get the idea. Everything is too busy, requires too much planning, too much spending money.

The whole nightclub culture of the 90s and 00s has also died a death. It's all about live music, which again requires planning and spending money. It's much harder to go to a big city and hop from one nightclub to the next. If you really wanted to, you could go to Ibiza, which is a specialised nightclub destination and you could experience pic related (along with thousands of drunk chavs) but you' never experience that on a tour.

    It has not become unobtainable.

A friend of mine, aged 28 is currently interrailing around Europe. He has a small backpack with him, is staying in hostels and having a great time. So far he has visited Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Lake Bled and he's far from being done. I video called him; he was in a hammock in the woods on a beautiful summers day. He has met loads of people, travelled with some, partied with some.

The reason you think it doesn't exist is because you're waiting for a perfect group of friends to travel with, or to invite you along. You won't meet them in your basement, anon. Just go out there and have fun. Bee confident 😉
