London is definitely not worth visiting, as it's basically just like any other city in the Western World, aside from some cool historic landmarks like Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, etc.

The Lakeland district (Cumbria) is really nice in the summertime, but it's off the beaten path for sure.

I went there to explore the remnants of two very old pipe tobacco companies, Gawith & Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith, as well as to buy as much of their good pipe tobacco as I could, as it's very hard to get here in the states nowadays.

Aside from my tobacco hunting, I found the town of Kendall in Cumbria to be an idyllic small town type experience. It truly looks like something out of a story book.

Fella it's one of the most popular destinations in the country, and relatively crowded in the summer (at least in terms of road access). There's a direct train from London in less than 3 hours.

Its a mix of post industrial shitholes and comfy small towns and beautiful villages. The big cities other than London basically only came about because of the industrial revolution so actually have very little history and dont have much to offer so you want to look for small cities and towns if you do want to visit eg: York, Canterbury, Oxford, Cambridge are all lovely places which reflect the good aspects of our country very well.

Honestly though this country is probably one of the most unique countries in the world both in how beautiful it is but also how utterly grim it is too

      >Honestly though this country is probably one of the most unique countries in the world both in how beautiful it is but also how utterly grim it is too

Every single developed country is like this, you just don't see it because you're a foreigner and understandably don't visit the shit bits.

The thing that does slightly set Britain apart is that we expect even our poorest to live in a house, which means that more of our landmass is taken up with lower-class housing. Countries like Germany where flats are more common can house their poor and immigrant populations in relatively small, geographically isolated ghettos without an outsider needing to really see it.

he thing that does slightly set Britain apart is that we expect even our poorest to live in a house, which means that more of our landmass is taken up with lower-class housing.

WTF are you actually talking about? I am a teacher and my cousin is an accountant and we can't afford to even RENT. The problem isn't 'the lower class' it's a city the size of liverpool coming here every year and NIMBYs who love diversity when its very far away from them.

          Anonymous

I don't disagree with your post, anon. When I said "the problem", I was not referring to the the problem with house/home prices, but the "problem" of Britain being uniquely divided between beauty and grimness, which was the assertion of the previous poster. My point was that you see a lot more of the grimness in Britain because our cities are more spread out with houses, in Germany they have a few compact districts filled with high-rise flats that the average foreigner never has to see if he is just passing through as a tourist.

Just to clarify further, I actually do think that houses are mostly better than flats for people to live in, and that Britain has the right approach provided we can lower prices. NIMBYs and migrants are not unimportant in achieving that goal, but the main thing IMHO is banks. Prices are being artificially propped up through obscene amounts of credit, and that's having a knock-on effect on rental prices.

Hope you can find somewhere to live soon

Pretty much. There is not anything culturally interesting outside of London in terms of cities other than Edinburgh if you care, Brighton and… thats it.

You will be going for London and the villages around, or nature in the north/whales. Over all not interesting compared to Europe. Tue cotswolds offers most of that typical small village experience all in one place near london. I’d say its worth just going to london, Cotswolds, then maybe bath and back to london and you wont be missing much. You could go to Brighton/dover too.

When we start talking nature i just feel its not fricking worth it with Europe so close and cheaply accessible.

Random point: i live in Japan and Japanese people of a certain age all go to liverpool. They tell me this, obviously because the beatles. I just feel sorry and weep. What a depressing shitty place to go all the way from Japan for. What the frick.

I don’t like like going abroad so I usually go to Cornwall every year. St Ives, Newquay, Padstow, Truro etc are lovely places and it’s a small place so you can visit almost everything in a week but I usually stick to 2 since I hate being on the road 24/7. It’s got some good surfing beaches too and it’s fairly warm in the summer. And you’ve got all the historical sites, moors and landscapes. And it’s still almost completely white which is always a bonus.

Britain is both overrated and underrated for wrong reasons.
Wales is very underrated in general, only the Brits seem to give a shit about Wales. I was the only foreigner there during my whole stay in Wales. I stayed in St Davids and Northern Snowdonia.

London is definitely quite different from other European capitals. Felt much bigger and active, it’s probably the liveliest European capital I have experienced.

Yah. I’ll add from above wales is nice but it really has no draw internationally because anyone who can go to wales will also just go to norway/sweden or iceland. They all do it better if im honest if you are into that kind of nature.

Wales just isnt very exciting, even in terms of nature. Its the kind place you find cool and a little impressive if you discover its on your door step but wouldn’t travel on a plane for.

Ok. Im from England so obviously will have a blind spot for random churches and homes.
Its like Japan. When i moved here temples and shrines were interesting even the little random ones. but my GF finds them completely unnote worthy, naturally. Im almost there with them.

Churches are compounded due to childhood experiences being stuck in them bored and wanting to escape, so i never would have imagined anyone finding them interesting but it makes sense seeing as they are often old as hell and i suppose not typical for most the world

Yes, they’re generally pretty easy - as are most lasses in northern cities. Also Liverpool is actually one of the whiter large cities in England, still about 80-90% which is much higher than America’s whitest major city (Portland, OR)

Liverpool is hands down the whitest city in the UK. Even immigrants tend to actually gel into local culture. Scouse girls are misleading because they're almost always overdressed. Great to visit but zero jobs.

A polack here, used to live in Petersfield in the south of England from 2014-2017. Did my A levels there but also worked with a tree surgeon and did pizza deliveries.

South of England has beautiful countryside with lovely houses. Also, most of small towns still have quite a few things going on in them, like a gym/martial arts, some pubs, libraries etc so so even if you live in the countryside you are not cut off from any type of social interaction if you dont want to be cut off. And this is not the case in many other countries where if you come from a small town or a village next to a small time you have absolutely nothing to do but drinking. Like in eastern europe for example.

Also people are very nice. I know that there is a lot of crime in bigger cities in UK and it is wise to be careful but in general people are very friendly and open, and again is is not like that in every country. UK is one of the places where if you knock on someones door in the middle of the day and ask for a glass of water they will certainly give it to you. Not much racism towards polish people at least, I even remember that the day after the Brexit vote I had a couple of people walk up to me in the martial arts gim that I used to train at and tell me that this place will be always my home and that I will be always welcomed here etc which was very nice.

Like someone stated even the poorest people seem to be able to afford living in a house or a flat. When I did pizza deliveries I went to some proper council estates which looked pretty much shit and yet everyone seemed to be able to afford a car. Says something about the quality of live in the country.

Downsides are: not that much history asides from a few places and if you are into historical stuff I would rather go to south Europe: much more to see, much better food, better weather.
Big cities in UK seem to be very crowded and very expensive, only went to London like 2 times and I dont really think of ever going again.

I'm British and I agree with the American, it's an absolute fricking shithole.

Everything is insanely expensive, the dating dynamics are fricked beyond repair. 95% of people are fricking braindead, spending their entire paycheck on binge drinking and getting cheesy chips.

Impossible to make friends or close connections because everyones got their head so into the rat race and the unspoken social queues are just fricking draining.

Women are fricking hideous compared to the rest of Europe but have the self entitlement of being the most attractive.

Every town is a clone of itself, few pubs, church, shopping centre. Copy and paste +/- being outnumbered by muslims.

Very grim overall, but I had the pleasure of living in Oxford and Bath. Oxford is a great city to be in if you're young and have no plans to stay for long. Bath is very beautiful and you can meet a lot of people passing through.

England, specifically South of England, is decent.

Ireland, especially Dublin, is a complete shithole. It's like a shittier in UK in every single way.

I was only in Wales once and that was in Cardiff; I mostly went to frick my gf ass we were both working at a hostel at the time and needed a private room. So I combined it with a nice trip.

I can't comment much on Scotland. The outdoors seem pretty, but overall their country seems like a boring place. I'd like to visit for some hiking in the future.

Overall the food is very poor, there isn't a strong native cuisine like in most of Europe, people are kind of ugly unironically, and there's that annoying sense of everything being walled off, taped off and made boring for the sake of "security". Like there's cameras and fences everywhere. Ugliest housing in the first world, hands down some shantytowns look more appealing than the average British suburb.

tl;dr mixed feelings, mostly hate the place, but have some nice memories

Irish provinces ranked by scenic beauty
      1. Connaught
      2. Ulster
      3. Munster
      >---Power Gap---
      4. Leinster

Leinster will always be contaminated by the absolute toxic waste side that is Dublin. It's a fricking shit hole that should be avoided at all costs, and I'm so sorry that you were convinced to come here. Connaught is fricking beautiful and wonderful in every way. Rugged and wild glacial valleys are commonplace in Mayo and Galway. Leitrim is sparsely populated and home to some lovely quaint towns and the always pleasant Carrick-on-Shannon. Galway has an abundance of cheap booze.

Munster has the Ring of Kerry, which gives Connemara a run for its money, and County Clare in general, but Clare does have Shannon, which is just depressing. Plenty of breweries around in Cork and Tipperary, but cork city is inly a little behind Dublin in terms of shithole. Waterford is also quite quaint.

Ulster is very underrated in terms of just how beautiful the landscape can be. Monaghan is just rolling green hills, Donegal is fricking wild and Northern Derry shares some similarities. Lots of good hiking in Ulster, not as good as Connaught, but deserves a shout. Belfast is alright, nicer than Dublin. Just don't mention anything about being a Catholic or a Protestant. Each crowd will be friendly with you.

Leinster is the odd one out. Nothing really stands out. Wicklow and Wexford are nice, but everything almost else is commuter belt trash. For every Trim, you've got a Balbriggan, and for every SummerHill, you've got Rush. Just avoid. If you aren't robbed in the pubs, you'll be berrated in the streats by Junkies, Roma Gypsies, Nigerians, and Bangladeshi's. Dublin has been thoroughly """Enriched"""

Go West. Do the "Wild Atlantic Way" and save yourself the hassle. Fly into Shannon, Cork, Knock, or Belfast. Dublin doesn't have a metro/train to the airport

        Anonymous

Ireland is pretty, it's just the Irish and anything that has anything to do with cities or people is pretty shit. I did parts of the Wild Atlantic way and I can recommend it. Not even far from Dublin there is Howth and Wicklow mountains... but then again it's too much of a shithole to live in. Not only you have crack heads smoking in broad daylight, you will also have to deal with rabid packs of chavs on daily basis. God forbid you smack some 13 year old shithead around, you'll be fricked by the Irish court system which practically allows these little shits to do whatever they please short of rape or murder (even then it's only a minor issue for these scum).

I have never once felt any threat by any of the immigrants, it's the Irish public housing scum and pikeys that will frick you over. Go ahead, go to city center and show me that 99/100 times the crakcheads and scum aren't Irish. Go in city center after 5PM and tell me all the shitheads vandalizing the place and doing petty crime aren't Irish shitheads.

Muh immigrants don't apply, it's the only place in Europe I'd rather live in a refugee center than in working class neighbourhood like Crumlin, FInglas or Cabra, all "enriched" by local Irish youths and their good for nothing parents.

Glad to hear you had a good time out west though.

Not to mention that Irish are somehow some of the laziest frickers I have ever met. Nothing really works well in Ireland. Things sort of operate, but if you pay closer attention, half of what you see is broken, and 99% of the time it is because some lazy, moronic fricker is in charge. You lie as easily as you breathe, I can't count how many times in work I've heard "It'll be grand!" only for me to have to chase down some c**t to get them to do THE BARE MINIMUM after fricking up for times beyond any count. For every nice, solid person there's five frickers that are straight out of an English nationalist page about every single bad thing about the Irish. Jesus Christ. I fully understand the pessimism that is so common amongst anyone who gives a shit and is half-intelligent when they're from your island.

A lot of that comes from the attitude of how poorly run services should be fixed or made more efficient. "Just throw more money at it" Many services have become a black hole for money, and if you're within that environment, you don't need to do shit to get well paid.

Depends. Having commuted into London for 6 years+ I can say it's not a place I'd like to live. Having said that, it does have decent transport links, lots to see and do, great food and bars etc.

Outside, for me, is more interesting. There are vast areas of beautiful countryside, seasides, culture and good vibes. Don't get me wrong, some parts are dying due to globalisation and the erosion of British culture, but we still retain some uniqueness.

Just avoid Blackburn, Bolton, Bradford, Rotherham...anywhere filled with Pakis and rapey muslims.

If you want to contrast two different areas, look into Windsor and Whitchurch

The villages are like being transported back to the 18th century for the most part. They are still very well preserved and plenty still have pubs dating back to the medieval ages.
As for cities, it's a mix of industrial shitholes like Glasgow and Manchester and well-preserved medieval cities like York and Edinburgh (an honourable mention to Norwich as well). London probably falls in-between with medieval, Victorian and modern architecture bundled up together.

I should add that the English countryside is mostly flat green pastures with some small forests here and there. You can spot horses, cows and sheep freely roaming through it sometimes, not much different than other countrysides like in Northern France. The Scottish countryside resembles more the Alps in the Highlands (not sure about the Lowlands) with its own aesthetic: greyed brick cottages, stone walls separating the road from the fields, Highland cows and llamas pasturing, large mountains and lakes in the distance, etc. Take a bus from Edinburgh to Eviemore or vice-versa and you should see for yourself, well worth it

What's A-Class Cope is going to a country famous for it's hospitality and friendliness and then blaming the people there when they are not nice to you. You are absolutely 90's Action Flick Plot, Weapons Grade, Enriched Copium.

When did I say people weren't nice to me? Besides feral youths which are not even nice to other Irish? The issue I have with Irish is that they are lazy, double faced and dishonest. Much could be said about lack of punctuality. As a tourist you will never have problems with this, but try living there. Plus all the issues you skimmed over, like police force being nonexistent and not having any interested in keeping streets decently safe. England does literally everything Ireland does much better. Even simple things like banking, etc. Imagine having to use fricking AIB when you could have banks like Monzo, etc. There's so much wrong with Ireland. Most of the things as far as nature goes are also present in Scotland or Iceland, except there you get actual wilderness. Pubs are boring once you realize that's all there is to do.

The UK is a dilapidated, steaming pile of shit, or at least 99% of it is. Arguably the ugliest architecture and housing in the developed world. Honestly probably the least educated and scummiest people in the first world (and definitely in the Anglosphere). Horrid culture and we probably have the worst immigrants in the world too.

I’m convinced that a huge portion of this country is barely literate. I can’t count the number of people I’ve met that can’t even spell basic words or use basic punctuation and grammar. Ask anyone in the UK with a bit of sense about them and they’ll tell you this is the truth.

The only thing Britain really has to it’s name is history and culture.

It’s not bait mate. Go to any of the smaller cities in the West Midlands, North West/East etc. You’ll meet more than a plenty of folks that can’t understand basic words that are bigger than a few syllables, let alone spell them.

Remember how many Brits thought that Brexit meant we were “leaving Europe” and that we’d “no longer be a part of Eurovision”. Two quotes I heard possibly more than a hundred times in combination.

Even into my twenties, there are plenty of people that I know who don’t understand the difference between the Tories and Labour. I just the other day had to explain to someone what Irony meant.

Most of Britain is a flat, grey, concrete shithole, with stacked council flats, cheaply built brutalist buildings, a poor and uneducated population, topped off with shitty weather and little going on. That’s the bottom line.
