I don't think I've ever spent more than $150 a night on a hotel. Like wtf, you are asleep anyway, who cares.

I actually agree. My friends all gush over how spending extra to stay at the Ritz-Carlton when abroad is worth it. I always think if you are spending time enjoying the enhanced hotel, you are neglecting the adventure outside where you traveled to experience to begin with. You can go to a posh hotel literally anywhere.

I doubt I ever spent more than $100 on a hotel. Expensive hotels are more for the morons that want to spend most of their time actually inside their hotel since nice hotels often have chefs and kitchen staff on hand 24/7 so they can eat inside the hotel and not at the outside restaurants in the locale they are pretending to visit while actually be holed up a great portion of the time within the hotel. I can understand why actually busy businessmen who are not traveling for leisure and who may be pressed for time would love that option -- but if you are tourist and you do that, imho you're a moron with too much money to part with.

Disclaimer: I am old and bourgeois.

I’ve spent $500+ per night on many occasions, but it’s never been my preference, it’s been because I’ve booked last minute in expensive cities (NYC, London, Moscow, Stockholm, Copenhagen that I can remember, but there were surely others).

I do just fine at more midrange places when I have more choice, and usually don’t spend half that.

The most I have ever spent on purpose was about $1200/night on a suite at the Oriental in Bangkok; I had been working in the sticks upcountry for a few months, living in a house that didn’t even have hot water, and treated myself to a birthday weekend there on my way out of the country. It was absolutely amazing to the point of being comical—the suite had a sort of personal concierge/butler assigned to it— but I don’t need to do it again. You can get something quite luxurious in Bangkok for less than $200, and be perfectly comfortable for less than $50.

        I understand his sentiment.

I didn't need a $1200 hotel though. I just got to Japan from Vietnam and upgraded from shitting in a hole in the ground to shitting on a toilet which plays birdsong when I sit on its heated seat and gives me a warm water prostate massage when I've done my business. I'm feels indescribably luxurious.

Mock all you like. I had a great weekend. Threw a little party in the suite, took very long hot steam baths and showers, didn’t have to squat in the shitter, got some sleep in a room that required no mosquito coils to ward off the dengue that was flaring up in the provinces.

        No regrets.

This is very understandable. I just went from no running water to a serviced apartment that doesn't have a single bug inside. It's like a string of nerves fell off my chest.

    Probably $350-400 in Chicago.

However, the nicest hotel I ever stayed in was probably the ITC Bengal in Kolkata (India). I think I paid about $120 for a multi-room suite. The view outside wasn't great, but the room was fricking nice.

Also recently stayed at a 5-star in Bangalore, which is the same property G20 is being held this year. It was pretty nice--I didn't have to pay--but nothing too terribly impressive.

Damn. really? I was going to go to India but decided against it because it seemed like I could never rest because the hotels were all disgusting

    $750/night, Soho House Istanbul. Fantastic.

I don’t always need the five-star experience but I really enjoyed the massive comfy bed, the huge bathroom with waterfall shower, champagne and fresh fruit in the room, biscuits and coffee service etc. etc.

The bath towel rack could be warmed with a switch so that your towels would be toasty when you stepped out of the shower and I still think about that.

About $3,600 a night at the Mandarin Oriental in Marrakech for part of the honeymoon for my first marriage. It was definitely worth it, having dinners in the desert, a driver who isn't out to scam me, private pool, was pretty amazing.

More recently I spent about $1,100 a night for a few nights at the Salamander out in Virginia. I just wanted some alone time to relax and go to a spa.

Was driving through Sturgis on a road trip when the Bike thing was going on, so figured I'd go, so I drove for like 12 hours and was dead tired by the time I got there. The only hotel was a shitty holiday inn jacuzzi room with a disgusting jacuzzi and it was way inflated because of the bike rally. Cost 400 dollars lol

350 leafs (260 USD) a night to stay at the Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff.

It was OK, it was a neat novelty that it was a giant log cabin and the balcony was pretty chill, but it was blatantly hyper-inflated tourist prices (each Banff hotel JUST HAPPENED to have identical rates), nothing special or luxury about it. Oh and it seemed like it was staffed entirely by 17 year olds from New Zealand.

$425/night but split three ways. Awesome top floor suite with two bedrooms/three beds in Lugano Switzerland.

I only use Marriott/Hilton points when doing the expensive shit. Otherwise ill spend whatever it takes not to be in a shithole with a good location.
