Probably the worst I've stayed in was a Ramada in Rochester. The whole place reeked of cigarettes, had to change rooms twice due to bugs in the mattresses and they had no hot items for complimentary breakfast.
Other then that most other places I've stayed that I booked myself have been fine thankfully since.

We went up to Big Bear to go snowboarding for 2 days. We booked a room at the Knight's Inn. They told us to go across the street to the second building. It was an abandoned hotel with no staff. It was completely falling apart. Our room had mold on the walls, the door looked like it had been kicked in at least a dozen times. The window had duct tape on it. There was hair in tub. And we could see dead bed bugs around the bed. We grabbed our shit and just walked out. We only paid like $50, so we didn't even bother going to the front desk and asking for a refund. We booked an Airbnb sitting in our car. I did eventually get a refund from travelocity because this was back when they were actually a good company.

This is the hotel. Look at the photos. They're insane.

I had no idea how shitty the Knights Inn brand was until this lesson came up
      >Dayton Ohio
      >sketchy door you could open with a bread knife
      >cigarette burns everywhere: the sheets, the carpet, the television, they managed to somehow burn the bathtub
      >food scraps around the carpet edges because staff is too lazy to clean properly
      >tub not fastened to the ground anymore so it rattles as you have a shower
      >slept on top of the bed fully clothed because I didn't want to catch something
      >"breakfast included": wonderbread served with a glass of tang

Door was warped and didn't close properly. Which is a problem when it opens to the outdoors and you're staying there for a ski trip

        >they managed to somehow burn the bathtub
That isn't uncommon, people will sometimes try to get away with smoking in their rooms using the bathtub.

Not him either. Frick Kuwait, easily the most boring country and the most boring city in the Middle East. When you main attractions are an old shitty water tower and a depressing mall full of flips you know it fricking sucks and there's a reason most Kuwaitis don't even bother to live in the country.

The worst one recently was a shitty hotel in Barcelona, everything was dirty and the shower was broken, so that water flooded from the bathroom into the main room. Disgusting.

Back to your question, yes. I travelled through a big part of asia and I always aim to get the cheapest accommodation. I always read the reviews, but I don't need a 3 or 2 star hotel. Sometimes they are filthy (god I just remembered the one in kathmandu) but I don't really care as I usually return to my room just to sleep and having a shower. (and I am so tired from all the sightseeing and stuff that even if there is a night club next to it I sleep like a baby)

I stayed in this little town in a remote part of Mexico in the mountains once. The hotel wasn't awful though it wasn't super comfortable, and there definitely wasn't internet, but the part that I didn't expect was that at 8:00 PM the whole towns electricity generation was shut off for the day. No warning was given of this just all the lights went out randomly. They came back on at about 8:00 AM. The temperature also dropped much more than I expected at night so it was freezing cold in the room and pitch dark. I asked them for extra blankets and they gave me a poncho to wear.

I slept poorly and it was pretty terrible but I thought the experience was kind of funny. I also had fried chicken at a "restaurant" next to that hotel before checking in which I'm pretty sure killed the chicken after I ordered it.

    >no running water
    >”oh, yes, a tiny plumbing issue, the water will be back on shortly”
    >find out from neighbors that they haven’t had water for weeks
    >they have a “small gathering” in the yard below the room
    >room is on an actual balcony so not even a wall separating me from this party going on like 20 feet from my head
    >party starts at 10pm
    >I hang out until 2am because I want to be cool
    >they’re literally blasting music until 8am

      X. People who book cheap rooms on AirBnB don’t have lawyers, which is further corroborated by you not knowing that the hour it would take your lawyer to send a demand letter would cost as much as 10 nights in a shitty Mexican AirBnB.

Secondhand story, but I think a good one. I know a guy who's a retired Customs Service (this was before they merged with the Border Patrol) helicopter pilot. Helicopters are slow and short range so cross-country trips meant multiple days of flying with overnight stops in random-ass places based on the helo's fuel range. One night they had to stay in some sketchy-ass New Mexico or West Texas desert town, in a hellhole motel, and that night some tweaker kicked in the room door of one of the other guys on his crew, which was a bad fricking idea because customs pilots/aircrew were all federal agents who carry sidearms and the tweaker got magdumped as a result.

So in South Korea it is very hard to find good housing, even locals take out loans to pay huge deposits which foreigners are not entitled to. A shitty studio is still $5k deposit plus rent, a decent place from 10-20k, and to be considered middle class a 50k deposit, you would get the deposits back when you move out though (assuming the landlord doesn't scam you and run with it)

So that's why many jobs offer housing, they cover the deposit, and own you lol. So I didn't have this and would either have to have roommates or rent a shitty place, and so I did both. Sharing bathrooms with limited hot water, sharing laundry with a bunch of strangers, sharing a dirty kitchen with some ahjusshi that won't stop hitting on me, paper thin walls, the smallest bed imaginable, is rough. But it saved a lot of my income. When I had roommates I lived better but it always felt like I was just a guest in their home. I think the worst room was just really mildew and gross, anything I put on the floor got wet, my laundry wouldn't dry in there, it was disgusting. I literally never had nice options so I always moved one shitty place to the next, and when I finally had a nice room, covid came and I ended up stuck in the country after moving out of my nice room.

I am just gonna say goshitels, one room tells, all the cheap housing in Korea is a damn nightmare. It feels like a homeless shelter closet.

Motel 6 Shreveport. Listen, just don't even stop in Shreveport for anything, anon trust me. There was only one fat nigress working the whole place, nobody to fix anything. My tv remote didn't work, ONE light out of them all worked, had to piss in the dark. I went down to ask if I could at least get some bulbs and change them myself, "oh no see cuz they discontinued those bulbs and they haven't changed to the new ones yet..." ??? That doesn't even make sense. So there is probably majority of the rooms lights out. AC halfassed worked, humid as frick. There are no nice hotels in downtown Vegas. The hotels are 50+ years old, some are older. The only reason to stay downtown is if you book a crazy cheap deal on a suite.

You can stay at the RIO for less than 80/night pretty much any day of the week and it'll be significantly nicer than any downtown joint. But with the huge influx of blacks in vegas, I don't even go any more. The strip is like 70 percent Black now. In the past, it was like 10 percent. You can thank legalized weed and Spirit Airlines offering $49 flights from Atlanta for the problems.

I stayed at a hotel in mtwapa, kenya (just outside of mombasa) that I booked online.

The road stopped about 1/4 km from the hotel, and the rest of the path was fine sand and dirt mixed. The hotel had no deadbolts or locks on the doors, just a push button that didn't function. The swimming pool was algae green. There were gigantic roaches everywhere. There were several old white fat boomer europeans with extremely underage kenyan girlfriends openly flaunting their situation. The establishment was run by this indian couple who didn't give a shit about anything. The electricity turned off for several hours a day, and randomly came back on.

It was unbelievably bad. The keys they gave you to the room also had these gigantic attachments do you couldn't put them in your pocket, only give them back to the front desk when you went out and just hoped nobody went into your room.

Had a great time regardless, but the hotel situation was unbelievably bad. They also tried to charge me $50 a night based off the online booking and fake pictures, but I told them I was only giving them $15 (the local rate), and they relented. This was in the middle of covid also, so there was very little tourism going on. In Kenya, the play was to scam as much money as possible, instead of trying to be as accommodating as possible.

Any Indian motel in America is terrible. Wtf is it with indians and motels? It's like koreans and dry cleaning. That's all they can fricking do, but at least the koreans can clean. You can guarantee that your room will be filthy, because the owner is too cheap to hire someone to clean and would rather have his wife do it. The towels will feel like sandpaper because they are never replaced. Go ahead and lift up the mattress or pull back the dresser to see what horrors await you. Peel back the sheets and look at the mattress - you will be sleeping in your clothes.

Even more depressing, if that's possible, is the state of how the owners live. They often live in an area connected to the front desk. If you happen to glimpse this area through an open door, you will see filthy, 3rd world conditions, with shit strewn all over while emanating the smell of curry and body odor. That's their normal, they don't have standards for anything. They are only interested in making a buck by cost cutting anywhere possible. Fricking pathetic.

they don't really have any incentive to make it good

        Anonymous

Where do they get this kind of fricking money though? That has to be an absolute fortune in India. And if they're really upper class why do they live like fricking animals in the US, literally living in the back office area of the lobby with makeshift sleeping areas, what motivation is there to even live like that if you're rich in India?

The curry smell is a dead giveaway though. There's Patel owned motels that aren't as bad but if I pick up on the fact that an extended Indian family is living on the premises I know its going to be shit and I'll go somewhere else. The room will be filthy as mentioned but also the furniture will be busted and the plumbing will have problems, the toilet will be loose or the hot water won't get hot because instead of hiring a plumber they have some beaner they hired as a "janitor" try to fix things.

it was a "motel" somewhere in the countryside in central vietnam, near a small village. 2-3 hours away from a city or normal roads.
we (group of 12 europeans) stayed there because friend married his gf there, who was from said village. no other options to stay.
the owner of the "motel" literally dragged two women out of one room because otherwise there would not have been enough space for our group. didn't understand what those 2 women said but I guess they were cursing him
the "motel" was from the looks probably a former jail or reeducation camp during the vietnam war. it was only possible to lock the doors with padlocks, all "rooms" where side by side in a inner courtyard which was circled by big walls. the doors to the rooms were out of literally rotten wood, there was enough space to stick a hand under the door, some doors had so many holes that you could see inside the "rooms"
the furniture inside was a joke. the matresses were, I am not exaggerating, hard as a rock. I even slept on the concrete floor (because we did onyl have a bed for 2 people and where 3 in our room, didn't make a difference anyways because of the matresses)

light would work like 50% of the day. water was only cold. worst thing was that one of the walls facing the fricking jungle had partially fallen apart, so there were tons of insects, geckos and whatnot in our room. we found the largest spider I have ever seen in my life in the closet. I used one bottle of my poisionous anti insect-spray to make a barrier around my sleeping space on the floor (luckily I had a small sleeping bag with me)
inside the yard there were some dogs who fought the stray dogs from outside who wanted to come inside the "hotel". during the day they were chill but as soon as it was dark and you went outside, they were growling agressively

best thing about the experience was that the family of my friend who was getting married was filthy rich, they were totally shocked about this "hotel" butno other option

Thursday - Saturday nights, heavy metal rock blasting until 1am from the club next door. Drunks outside the bedroom window.

Not terrible but certainly not great either, the locals who run hotels/AirBnbs/guesthouses in the Balkans have to be the cheapest, laziest, most half-assed, trickster people in the world. Trying to tell you “no AC included” despite it being middle of the summer in Southeastern Europe and having an AC literally mounted on the wall, refusing to supply basic amenities like towels, toilet paper or even fricking bedsheets, blatant lies like “Washing Machine on premise” and literally no Washing Machine exists, wanting you to pay literally hundreds of Euros worth of money in cash and refusing to take credit cards to avoid paying some stupid insignificant fee, couches for beds, drains that clog and flood your bathroom after like a two minute shower, radiator heaters installed improperly and bang like a motor when turned on, electrical outlets that don’t work or are installed in the most random inconvenient places- just like really basic shit and common sense is missing that you would never even fricking think about literally anywhere else in the world, even in third world countries. Every single place I’ve stayed in the Balkans always has one or two really weird quirks and it’s just a complete gamble on whether one place has worse quirks than others, and it’s all simple shit that the owner could fix easily if he/she actually gave a shit about quality or wasn’t such a tight wad cheap ass. People in the Balkans are literally at Carribean-tier levels of laziness and half-assery. Like damn, tighten the frick up and have some pride. These places could be great if they showed just the tiniest bit of effort and care.
