Airbnbs are rarely completely shit but they’re usually just annoying enough it can no longer justify the small amount you save vs a hotel. I’ve stayed in a couple abroad and there’s always little things you couldn’t possibly have known before getting there like the place just being slightly beat up despite good pictures, poor sound/heat proofing, poor ventilation, no money spent on regular maintenance, hosts being unresponsive when you actually need them, etc. it’s just annoying to deal with. I won’t be using that garbage service anymore unless it’s a group trip somewhere else in the states.

    >get hotel rooms in major cities
    >airbnbs in small cities and rural areas
    >always do airbnbs where you get the entire place to yourself with no shared areas
    >never have a horrible experience, just a few mediocre ones
The worst experience I had was an airbnb with no extra toilet paper for 3 guests/2 nights. I got lax and didn't check for extra toilet paper, assuming there was some under the sink, so when I ran out around 6am it wasn't great. Thankfully I always bring wet wipes when I fly.
Another airbnb came with a surprise when I arrived to discover the listing was wrong; it was actually a private room within a house. The owners were a nice older couple with a cute cat which soothed me, but I was a bit annoyed.
Honestly I don't understand how so many people have bad experiences, do they just go for the absolute cheapest rooms or listings with very few reviews? Most people wouldn't stay in a dirt cheap motel, but will stay in a gross cheap airbnb.

This, I don’t get it either. The reviews are so gamed you need to know 4 stars is already dodgy and anything less is avoid,
Also actually read the reviews, don’t just look at the rating.
I’ve only had one disappoint with Airbnb, it was in japan, and the mattress was hard/super cheap.. That’s it. Even then they were nice and even picked me up from the train station. Every other air bnb in japan was amazing.

Airbnbs in small cities/towns is so fricking great, especially when you can book a room inside some old ladies house.
    >usually offer you food
    >have good stories
    >pleasant to talk to and provides nice tips for the area

    Love it.

This, I have had some great airbnbs in small cities and rural areas. One time I was visiting a place just for the weekend, the older italian lady living there made some delicious soup with cheese in it for me, my gf, and my mom. It was one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. The place was also super cheap. Other time I stayed in a place which was pretty much like a 1 bedroom apartment for cheaper than a motel. The fridge was filled with food, the kitchen was stocked with supplies, everything was super clean. They had a huge TV and a bunch of board games. Made me even think of renting it out and moving there for a bit since the price was so good.

The worse place I've ever been was a basement apartment in long island, it was infested with roaches. Never fricking again. It was disgusting and almost ruined the whole trip.

I've been on a budget Eurotrip for the past almost 2 months now with gf. Worst bnb (and place we've stayed) so far is Paris for sure. The whole process of getting to the BnB is a greentext in and of itself but when we got there
    >host doesn't speak English or French
    >very clearly her apartment that she lives in
    >ask about wifi (it's on the listing) and get told the wifi won't be fixed until next week so we have absolutely no internet
    >TV doesn't work either which we weren't told
    >limited hot water for shower which we weren't told
    >BnB is disgusting with clumps of hair all over the place and stains
    >fridge has a weird smell and is full of stuff (as is pantry and bathroom)
    >stovetop doesn't work so we can't cook food
    >bed is just 2 mattresses stacked on top of each other with the WORST mattress in the world (I mean, you sit on it and you'll sink so deep that the mattress basically folds in half)
This was the start of our holiday too. About a week in. Only good part was the location. It was in Saint Denis but the train station was a 5min walk away and there was an Aldi nearby.
It's a joke between my gf and I now that whenever we stay somewhere shit or where something sucks we say "at least it's not (hosts) place"

It was pretty sketchy. When we got off Saint Denis station it was night and there was heaps of black dudes everywhere trying to sell cigarettes and shit. We were freaking out lmao. We didn't really explore the suburb but it was safe enough to travel to and from the station each day.

She was Spanish. It was pretty bizarre. We got stuck outside the BnB (it was like a small courtyard with 2 apartment buildings and a couple houses and we didn't know where to go) and a nice French guy offered his phone to us to call her and when she picked up he tried to talking to her and it just wasn't working. Basically just had to say "Airbnb" on the phone a bunch of times and she eventually came out to show us where to go.

24% of unemployment. it's mostly the area around saint-denis (the whole department) that is a shithole. they built nice offices for white collars just near the saint denis station but it costs a lot to secure the area and those white collar workers just go from the train station to their offices as fast as possible.
            >We didn't really explore the suburb
good for you. this is just 1km north of the station:

foreigners dont really know how bad the poor areas of paris are.

Grim. I didn't really mind Paris despite it not being the nicest, fanciest city.

Looking back now I don't mind it too much. It was just a funny thing that happened. This is the first time either of us have done a trip like this and it was at the beginning so of course we're going to make rookie mistakes. We would spend most of the day out in Paris anyways so it wasn't like our stay was ruined and everything sucked. Paris is probably in my top 10 cities that I've stayed in this trip.

    >asks if I want to check in early and keeps rushing me from the airport, obviously just trying to fit me around his lunch break
    >half open bottles of wine, cheese, old vegetables in the fridge the last guests "left over that you can have", aka I'm too lazy to clear it out
    >the WiFi was actually his neighbours through multiple floors of this building, so it only work in one corner and even then barely
    >the toilet didn't flush by the button, he showed how you had to reach into the back part and manually operate the mechanism
    >even then it didn't work and would get stuck draining, or flush with no pressure so I had shit flowing back out before the S bend
    >complain about the bathroom, he avoids the questions and recommends me some tourist traps - I was in Poland and he says here's a good pizza place
    >also keeps mentioning how good a deal I'm getting (perfectly average compared to the other options)
    >on my way out I accidentally broke an IKEA vase, he quotes the damage to Airbnb as €100 in fricking POLAND with the source as "my best memory"
    >I found the same article on the site for €25, complain to Airbnb and they adjusted it down to €80
    >remove my card so they can't bill it, haven't sign on since and won't be going back

This is usually my experience using AirBnB while traveling. It's also some slimey host who looks at me (American) as nothing more than a walking ATM. They constantly lie to your face then try to extort you for money via AirBnB.

I was in Uzbekistan recently and the host demanded I pay him $20/day to register my stay when it was his own legal obligation to do without charge. When you call AirBnB now, you're just connected with a Pajeet reading a script. No help at all. I've had whacko hosts knocking on my door at midnight because I complained to AirBnB about something. I now opt for hotels when I can.

This, everyone loves Airbnb until they actually have an issue and need to get help from support. Good luck getting the pajeet on the other end of the customer service chat to understand your issues in a timely manner. Good luck calling in to them and having them resolve the issue literally at all. Their support took days to get back to me when I had a problem with one of my stays. They are supposed to cover leaving to a new property if the one you booked isn’t as described but what they don’t mention is they will make this as difficult as possible. By the time you get there and realize the place sucks not only will most of the other properties be booked up, but they will be 2-3x the price as they were when you booked initially. Not worth.

An Airbnb in Africa was bad? Shocking. You encountered Black folk in Brooklyn? Unbelievable. You saw homeless people in Hollywood? dumbfounding.

Try reading reviews first. Don't book anywhere without a few dozen write-ups. And maybe stop going to shit destinations. Ive stayed in dozens of Airbnbs and Ive had maybe one negative experience because the Italian homosexual in the next apartment chain smoked 2 packs a day and it would get under doors and stink unless I blocked them with towels. But really, who gives a shit. We stayed there 1 night and left the next morning
