Pretentious "we have to help the poor N..." bullshit.
Unironically. Mostly women who work with kids and go to work in some african kindergarden for a few weeks or students.

Friend of mine was sent to a French course in Senegal a few years ago. He wound up hooking up with a beautiful local girl he found out after the fact was a hooker, but at least he was also invited to a home-cooked lunch at her mom’s house.

Senegal is of course a pretty weird place to learn French, because on the street all people want to speak is Wolof.

That’s all I got. Only ever been to East Africa myself.

It’s impossible to not make friends in Mauritania. The locals are kind and open-minded. Even the women will try to make friends with you, which makes it unique among Arab countries. Great memories of riding around Nouakchott in the back of a pickup truck playing guitar and singing songs with bros.
In Senegal just get off the beaten track to meet friendlies. I spent a week camping on the beach at Cap Skirring and the ‘Cap boys’ took care of me and made sure nobody jacked my shit while I spent the days fishing. Went out with them in their boats several times and am still in touch with a few.
Is this the best region on earth for independent travel? Maybe.

There are these things called "condoms", gays hate them so much that they built up an entire subculture on AIDS.

In Senegal, you can meet other whites in Oussouye or Cap Skirring.
You won’t meet any expats in Mauritania unless you speak Chinese.
