San Diego. You can send the wife and kids to the zoo or whatever while you go to a "business meeting" in Tijuana.

I've only been there once. La Jolla is really freaking nice. Don't know about hotels though.

San Diego. Avoid going during the second half of May and first half of June. Though the overcast is not the "fog" that everyone in this thread claims it is.

Best hotel options for a family are in North County. Look at Carlsbad. Lots of newer options, easy access to both the beach and Legoland. Most of the hotels, if not on the beach, have complimentary beach shuttles. Also a cute village. Drive to the Zoo and Sea World is a little bit of a hike but as a homebase, Carlsbad is cleaner and more family friendly. Also good striking distance to OC (1 hour to Disneyland; 2 hours with traffic).

I would recommend looking at the Westin Carlsbad, Cape Rey, any of the ones around Legoland, Four Seasons Residence Club or Park Hyatt Aviara if you want to splurge.

I lived in Newport Beach for 10 years. In about half of the years I lived there, we had no fog at all. But there were 2 or 3 years where June was terrible. We would have thick fog every day and It wouldn't clear up until 2 pm. And the water is cold as shit in June. I couldn't swim for more than 15 minutes without a wet-suit.

There are endless things to do with kids in Orange County. Disneyland, Knottsberry farm, and Legoland are the big 3. There is no compelling reason to choose San Diego over San Clemente or Newport Beach. The food prices are the same. It's only an hour drive from San Clemente to San Diego. I'd go with whatever you can get the best value for your room in a nice area.

Well Miami has better swimming weather, subtropical aquatic life/great snorkeling, lots of resorts, it's a great touris-

      > "business meeting" in Tijuana.

Actually, yeah, what he said. Send 'em to SeaWorld and go to Hong Kong.

San Diego is ok. The problem you'll have is that there are certain areas with a very serious homeless problem in San Diego. You shell out a couple grand for a beach vacation, you don't expect to see meth users sleeping on the beach and needles in the alley behind your Airbnb in Ocean Beach, or Mexican gangs in Imperial beach. The other problem with the nice beach in La Jolla is that waves can get so huge that you can't even go out, especially during a summer wave swell. And San Diego is expensive. You don't get a lot of bang for your buck. The fog can be really bad in June and the water is cold until at least the 4th of July.

Miami would be a total pass for me. The crime is insane.

My advice would be to do Orange County California in August. Find a nice Airbnb between Newport Beach and San Clemente. San Clemente or the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach would be ideal with kids. I would avoid the hotels on Balboa Peninsula, they're overpriced and dumpy. If you can find an Airbnb, snag it. But San Clemente has a few good beachfront hotels.

    San Diego
    >The climate is literally perfect year-round
    >Mountains
    >Better food
    >1 hr from the desert
    >1.5 hours from Tijuana
    >2 hrs from Los Angeles
    >SoCal surfing is some of the best in the world
    >La Jolla and Coronado are waaay nicer than Miami Beach

The only downsides are the water is cold and it’s probably slightly more expensive than Miami.

      >>The climate is literally perfect year-round
I was just there last week. It was raining for multiple days straight, harsh winds, and extremely foggy. I still had fun but I would call it far from perfect.

Yeah it’s been an very unusual winter for all of California.

FWIW these are San Diego’s climate averages and it’s so close to the ocean that it rarely gets significantly warmer or cooler than this.

Yes on San Clemente. But I think you're comment that
        >"You don't get a lot of bang for your buck. The fog can be really bad in June and the water is cold until at least the 4th of July"
also applies to OC. Hotels are generally more expensive there in the summer, food is definitely more expensive, and the amount of "things to do" unless you want just the Beach and Disneyland is decidedly less. Obviously if you have little kids that may be all you need, but San Diego is a more well rounded destination overall. Except for that May Gray/June Gloom envelope. And even then, it tends to be more persistent in the city area. North County beaches are more akin to Orange County's weather, but with better food and cuter towns (with the exception of San Clemente)

San Diego has a really bad homeless problem right now and the CoL is insane. Turned into every other shithole Cali city. Shame too, it was objectively the best place in America even say 10 to 15 years ago

I'm from San Diego. I've been to Florida. Florida is a better vacation place for families, if you avoid Miami. It's just more geared towards family entertainment.

One thing a lot of tourists don't pick up on is that San Diego doesn't have Miami's climate. It's not tropical here. The water is in the low 50s right now and will be until around June. SD is really only a beach destination (unless you're a surfer) in the summer. The rest of the year expect air temps in the low 50s-low 60s and foggy. Yeah that's "warm" compared to a lot of places in early spring but it isn't conducive to having a beach day with small children.

Other stuff in SD like the Zoo, Legoland, museums, etc are year round though its been unusually rainy this year. Unlike Florida San Diego also has a lot of hiking if you have a rental car and are into that.

I would say San Diego balboa Park museums

The trolly tour from old town which is worth a visit by itself the best Mexican food you will find

Visit the hotel Del coranado for lunch maybe the best beach in the country

I would either stay at the Hilton garden inn in old town

    Hotel circle in mission valley
Or downtown near petco park the Marriott Hilton or Hyatt along the bay

I really like Miramar Beach Florida. Check out the area around Mainsail. Amazing beaches. Great food. And it's just expensive enough to keep out the bumperlips.

San Diego is more family friendly. It has the San Diego zoo and several theme parks. Plus Disneyland isn't too far. The traffic sucks shit there though.
