Use to do this in China all the time as I wasn't set on a vacation there but on the 144hr visa, made a nice mini vacation to some place I would normally never go.

You can pay for an entire international weekend trip for that kind of money, so it would be stupid to waste it on just getting somewhere quicker. If the layover is long enough you would also be able to visit the country you're laying over in. Only high time preference bugmen (or incredibly rich people) would spend that kind of money to avoid a layover.

thats extremely subjective. if youre jeff bezos and making a million dollars a second then you would never waste a day to save a bit of money. all depends on what your time is worth.
35h layovers are much better than 10h layovers, provided you can leave the airport and sleep somewhere nice.
A lot of flights stop in Tokyo for 15+ hours. So why not go hang out in Japan for a bit? Even though Tokyo is the Paris of Japan.
