It is a pretty fountain. People have been writing about it for centuries, it's been pictured in lots of advertisings and movies, figures in every travel guide, and is shown in any Rome travel documentary or vlog.
It's like the peeing kid in Brussels but it's actually beautiful and in a city that gets more tourists.

      First of all, this
Secondly , I blame social media and Instagram spots. 20 years ago you could go there, take a picture in a couple of minutes and keep going with your Rome visit. Now? Impossible. Everybody wants their fricking selfie and full body pic in front of it.

Well at least its objectively beautiful, UNLIKE the fricking mermaid in Copenhagen that thousands of tourists trample each other underfoot to take a picture of

If there is one thing I learned from traveling to "tourist hotspots", it's that the average normie tourist has no thoughts of their own and quite literally follow the flock.
They are told that this fountain is really cool and beautiful (which it is tbh) and that it is a "MUST SEE!!11!!!!", so that is exactly what they do when they go to Italy. Simple as. They don't stop and think about if it's something that actually interests them, they merely go because they have 10 days left before they return to their wagie job and they have to go somewhere. Why not a "MUST GO"?
I had a similar experience in Kyoto. That city has so many amazing shrines/temples that are literally desolate for half the day because everyone and their mother just HAS to go to Kiyomizu and Kinkaku. The latter is honestly the most boring destination I've been to in Japan - you literally just spend 10 minutes walking in a circle around the temple, only looking at it from a distance. Yet it was by far one of the most crowded places in Kyoto.
Mass tourists are like sardines in a fish school.

Kek you are so right about Kyoto. In some minor temples I actually thought that I was trespassing because there wasn't anybody around. You actually need to see Kiyomizu and Kinkaku yes, but holy shit if you study the map Kyoto has enough locations to waste a week if you are into that shit.

It's a cool fountain. I also wouldn't be surprised if people ended up there by accident. I had never even heard of it before I went to Rome with my family, but some guy selling postcards out in front of the Pantheon insisted walk over to it when my dad asked about it on one of the postcards. He wouldn't even answer any questions he just demanded we walk the block or so over. Cool experience.

Word, I know I ended up there by accident. My hotel was right next to the Spanish steps, so my first day in Rome I started walking aimlessly, south from the steps, and after 10 minutes ended up at the Trevi fountain.
