I'm not trying to bait but I get a shudder just looking at that picture. How can people sleep like that surrounded by total strangers with zero security? I take no pleasure in spending $100 a night when I travel but it's worth it for an en suite and a locked door.

Some people are just that poor and have very low standards for their surroundings; these "establishments" allow them to experience travel as well, be kind.

I can easily afford hotel rooms but traveling solo gets lonely and boring after 2 days - at least for me it does. Half the fun is meeting other travelers from all over the world.

Imagine going to foreign countries only to hangout with other smelly hostel homosexuals who by and large never engage with locals and only communicate in English

Meanwhile, RTs learn or attempt to learn the language, avoid tourists and hostel homosexuals, engage with locals, get invited to private parties, get immersed in the real culture, bang multiple women who are shocked by how well you assimilate with their people, carry yourself with body language that indicates you belong where you are, get approached by real people, rarely get approached by people trying to sell you shit, get invited over for dinner with the family, travel through the sketchiest part of town to be introduced to an underground music scene no one knows exists, get free party favors without being drugged, get offered a place to crash if you party too hard, make real friends you stay in touch with and see again, and too many other things to list.

            >if you have never experienced these things youre not really travelling you're basically just experiencing the same shit that is everywhere in the world just with different coordinates.

like oh look downtown, oh look a hotel, oh look tourists, oh look a bar, oh look a tourist attraction, oh look a restaurant, oh look a mall, oh look other homosexuals from my home country,

security doesnt matter when you travel
you have like 3 shirts, 2 pairs of jeans and a couple pairs of underwear in your bag anon, aint nobody wanting to steal that.
security's ironically worse in hotels because richgays who stay in hotels do so with their $10k laptops, $4k iphones and other goodies worth stealing
about the only thing that'll get pinched at a hostel is if you're dumb enough to keep beer in the public fridges without hiding it

Typically, yes. In SEA you can stay in a decent hostel for less than $10 a night, and if you want to risk the anal rape maybe like $2 or $3.

It's hard to say because it depends on what you're looking for.
A lot of hostels these days have pretty nice kitchens, a pool, concierge service, private bars and generally really nice interiors. But of course these hostels can cost more than the one that's just a shitty building with bunk beds and a bathroom.
In some parts of the world, the price difference between a shared room and a private room is huge (Sydney), in other places, it's only a few bucks (Hanoi). In some parts of the world, hostels aren't even a thing, some countries just don't have them because not enough tourism or the culture doesn't really like the idea of shared accommodation.
Generally hostels are still the cheapest option, but I feel like the price of a (shitty) private hotel room or AirBnB just keeps going down, so the gap is closing. For me, it's also about meeting people, so the hostel is the obvious choice everytime.

Note the anon you're referring to but I have an anecdote. My card got cloned in a hotel in Thailand. Luckily I leave a dummy wallet with some dead, empty bank cards, library cards, a few notes etc at the very top of my bag or suitcase and keep the ones with cash on loose in my pocket and sleep in shorts. Hotels aren't as locked as you think they are.

Nah, I like to mix in nice hotels too if it has something to offer besides a bed, shower and toilet. No way I wasn't staying in Marina Bay Sands. People in nice hotels generally want to be left alone, people in hostels generally want to chat. Just avoid the ones popular with 18 year old gap yahs.
90% of travellers aren't rich and hostel people usually have a few days of good conversation in them.

      >hot babes you can frick in the shower at ease
      >free booze from the fridge for all
      >chill people

      >bunch of middle age and college dudes dicking around on their phone and laptops
      >women who while foreign aren't even that hot compared to what you can get anywhere in San Deigo that isn't slums
      >no free booze and free shit in the fridge is just half eaten slop

      >shit showers and beds
      >unfriendly leftist morons
      >sex isn't possible unless you are a giga chad

I don't mind staying at hostels abroad on occasion. I've met some great people, had some memorable times, but at the end of the day I can only do it a few nights a week. It's not worth being tired all the time while traveling because Britbongs stumble into the rooms at 4am or some chink decides to turn the lights on and pack up everything including the kitchen sink for a 530am flight.

That said, American hostels are the fricking absolute worst in the world as a lot of people staying in them are down on their luck Americans or those barely hanging onto not living on the street. Never again, I will pay hundreds of dollars on an overpriced American hotel room than stay in a hostel in that country.
