It's because of their shitty government, highest inflation in Europe right now.

Vienna is based but it's not a city for broke fricks and never was.

You want to backpack and have cheap vacations go somewhere else.

There's are decent cheap hotels in Vienna with good amenities but don't expect 37 euros/night hostels.

100 percent agree. If you want cheap, you can take a 45 minute train ride into Bratislava and drink $1.50 beers and eat $4 sandwiches and stay in a hotel for the same price as a hostel in Vienna. The only reason for a bedpacker to do Vienna would be a day trip to walk around. And honestly, Vienna isn't that expensive. It's comparable to US prices.

If you want to see expensive, go to Switzerland. Take $100 one way train ride. Buy a $50 knit hat. Drink a $24 wienertail. Have yourself a $100 fondue meal for one. That's an expensive country.

I was just in Vienna and stayed in a nice youth hostel for like 20 euros/night. Do you people just fundamentally not know how to use hostelworld or what?

You Get what you pay for, it’s a premier city in Europe. I was there in 2019, would definitely go back. The high prices keep backpackers out which is awesome. I also remember the public transit being excellent.

Disagree. While not as grimy as Berlin, there were still heaps of druggies and third world 'immigrants' just hanging around train stations and the main shopping street.
