I've heard the US is super anal about it and idk if they would know this particular defect
Your curly NZ passport is fine. I've been to the US many times with a passport that was in worse condition than yours.

my passport doesn't even have anything on the cover, it's just blue the only place it got me in trouble was India, the guy didn't want to let me in.
My passport got soaked in a typhoon and is now permanently bent / the ink has run on a bunch of the papers. I'm always a bit nervous going through customs but it's never been even a slight problem in 6 years so I would say you are good to go. The only really important page is the one with your details and so long as the epassport machines can read the chip inside the condition of the passport doesn't really matter.

They don't care. Put it in a passport protector and they double won't care.
My passport is in a horrid state (some pages almost torn) but as long as the chip and the ID pages are still ok, it's all fine.
