Will Japan ever stop wearing masks?

Pretty much every western country has dropped mask mandates, meanwhile Japanese people are still wearing them even when they're walking alone outside

    We wear masks because
1.air quality isn't very good due to mass manufacturing and China being nearby ( I guess they both go hand in hand) so some people wear masks
    2. It is much more hygenic and respectful than using your hands to cover a cough. Imagine coughing into your hand only to touch your phone or a hand railing immediately after. Gross.
    3. We see it as an incredibly trivial thing. No idea why white people are so butthurt about it. Imagine seething because you are forced to wear a shirt to work. stop being a snowflake. If you want to take it off outside go ahead. Please keep it on if you're sick though.
    4. We trust our government. Why do you think we haven't let in a shitload of shitskins like your cucked countries do? Also, unlike you mutts, euros and cucknadians who went from "DONT WEAR MASKS! DEY DUN DU NUTIN!" to "WEAR MASKS! IF YOU DONT YOURE A BIGOT" within the span of two pathetic months. Our governments recommended masks since day 1. Hell even China was recommending masks since the literal first month of the pandemic despite the shortages. You guys didn't start till...the 6th month? And before that the government was giving very mixed messages.
    4. Some girls use it to hide their porcelain skin from the harmful sun rays.

There you go. If you are still butthurt about it then don't fricking come here. When in Rome do as the Romans. If you want to be a Black person then....stay in the US lol.

they wear masks especially when sick as a courtesy to others, because they know living in a highly densely packed city that diseases can spread like wildfire. they do it out of basic human etiquette and decency

they have no reason so stop now and will not anytime soon

Happy for you, hope you get to see more of Kyushu if you haven't made your tour around the island already.
The Japan general can be quite helpful if you have concrete questions, hopefully it will go back to the pre-pandemic self soon, as should the Japanese if they can convince people to not wear masks as a permanent reminder of stranger danger.
After all, they managed to do well with respiratory viruses without forced voluntary masking before 2020.

My 浄土 is also in Kyushu so I'll have to at least return for that(Kurokawa Onsen, Kumamoto Prefecture, I would really recommend it if you ever get the chance)

Understandable, the pandemic measures killed off most useful discussion, hence I hope that it will go back to at least 80% of the usefulness after the first and second wave of tourists have visited and there is some actual on-topic discussion.

If you have some time to spend in Kyushu, I would recommend you to take a look at the Kyushu rail pass, you can do very nice trips all around the island without as many limitations as the full JR pass, especially if you have already explored Nagasaki and Fukuoka.

mask culture in japan has been a thing decades long before covid
they wear masks especially when sick as a courtesy to others, because they know living in a highly densely packed city that diseases can spread like wildfire. they do it out of basic human etiquette and decency

they have no reason so stop now and will not anytime soon

remember that next time a karen throws a fit when asked to do the bare minimum of protecting not only her own health, but the health of others.

I’ve been in multiple countries for months now where no one is wearing masks. I, nor anybody else, has gotten sick. Conclusion: you’re a moron.

The mask culture started because of SARs, which was actually a pretty comparable event to covid on a smaller scale (it was a lot bigger deal in Asia than the west)

I'm not even trying to be a conspiratorial/pol/tard, but this used to just be common knowledge.
There was also a drawing into two camps in Japan at the time of maskers vs antimaskers (just not as dramatic and media fuelled as ours was) and conversations about what it does to society and people's emotional development - just after 20 years that line of questioning has basically run its course and people accepted masks.

You can see these themes played with in some early 2000s anime like Eden of the East. They just don't literally make it about the mask in those shows because that's when Japanese mass market media still had *some* subtlety.

Adding to my post because I forgot to make my fricking point.

Slackjawed morons act like Japan and Korea taking to Covid restrictions like ducks to water is somehow vindication of these policies (because Asia gud I guess)
But they miss the point that they just went through all of this 20 years ago, and all of their chuds have already been removed from society.

Now, to let myself be conspiratorial for a second, it's a common belief in Japan and Korea that the two countries are used as a sort of social engineering testing ground by the American government.

It's certainly interesting to look at SARs and Covid in that light.

Can’t really compare states (if you’re referring to the US) because no state really had any kind of enforced mask mandate, and the tragic death toll over there reflects that

                Anonymous

Yeah, the death toll in the US definitely was because of the absence of magicalnmasks and not due to the poor health and even poorer decisions of health officials at the beginning of the pandemic.
As for comparing states, Germany is a good example of states with and without mask mandates during the same time and identical resulting curves.

Ironically third-world shitholes never went really far from normal, people don't care about a flu-like virus if they have more important things to worry about, plus corrupt legal systems means that even if something is mandated, it doesn't mean that it will actually get enforced.

They flat out said that wearing the non-surgical cloth and paper masks is useless though, and yet there are countless people wearing them through airports and on buses and just standing around outside by themselves. If it's such a simple and vital thing then why the frick isn't it mandated to do it the only right way? The pandemic is a public health emergency, right? Encouraging people, actively or passively, to use a less-than-effective or even useless method of protection against a deadly virus is wrong, right? You don’t have to wear a mask legally but who wants to deal with social stigma while on holiday? There was already enough foreigner stigma in Japan even before 2020, now it’s amplified 1000 fold if you don’t have a sweaty, disgusting bacteria trap diaper wrapped around your face 24/7, not to mention all the other stupid COVID rules and etiquette that probably also exist. I know the incel American redditors ITT don’t care because they already have greasy, disgusting, acne ridden faces, but most normal people outside of Asian bug countries and California find wearing masks absolutely disgusting and filthy, and want that shit nowhere near their face- not if they take care of themselves and their skin.

Mask culture has nothing to do with intelligence, and everything to do with collectivist shame-based society.

An intelligent but pragmatic person in Japan recognizes that the social pressure to conform is so enormous that he would be committing professional and social suicide by not playing along.

The only people who do not conform are those who have nothing to lose or nothing to gain by playing along. These are few and far between in such a place.

You must understand that being an independent outlier is not a heroic thing in a place like Japan. It just makes you a risk factor and nobody know how to treat you. This makes them uncomfortable since they prefer every interaction to fall under the standard spectrum of politeness they usually work with.

A little cloth mask doesn't protect you from bad air quality. The particulate matter that forms smog and air pollution goes right through it.

You just think that because you are huffing your own humidity and can't smell the pollution anymore that it doesn't exist. It's a very stupid and extremely common notion.
