Grew up near Flint because there's lots of nice country towns in the area, adventurous types would drive on the wrong side of the hospital to look at all the abandoned houses sometimes. The energy is literally indescribable. Miles upon miles of dilapidated one floor single family homes used to sell crack, grass to your knees and overgrown vegetation, mentally ill junkies walking around talking to themselves, sometimes in sub zero temperatures. Needs to be seen to be believed.

Oh yeah I drove to Niagara falls through Amish land in Pennsylvania and getting to New York the shittiness definitely increased in the quality of roads and the only thing in small towns that's still in business being shady looking smoke shops, definitely got the vibes that everyone does heroin here in a lot of towns I passed through different than the towns on the west coast and pnw where everyone does meth, at least they stand around outside and do weird shit there. Niagara fall was also a shithole once you get past the casino.

Lots of parts of Vegas look like you're in the post apocalyptic 3rd world too

America has an unfair reputation of lacking history, but the country is like 250yo. That said, some of the conquistadores built some really cool churches etc dating back to the early 17th Century. There is older stuff if you are interested in native dwellings etc. The real draw of America is its natural beauty. Pic related, I took this in New Mexico 200 yards outside my AirBnB. You can find beautiful landscapes that range from desert to tundra all in one country, which you can't do in Bongland.

I often want to go back to the UK because of the amazing history, but seeing Red Rock Canyon outside Las Vegas at sunset and knowing nothing like it exists in the UK keeps me here.

You clearly don't get it, the """"Nice"""big cities in the US are flukes. The vast majority(if not all) are really shit. You want the medium sized cities or towns. Towns are where the real US is at, and no, not all the towns are vehicle oriented. Nice 40-80k population towns still exist. Do they have big attractions? no, but they are perfect to live in and just big enough for everything you need and then access to big cities or airports.

I’m essentially larping as a bum across the US and Aberdeen Wa was so far the worst, second was Biloxi. A lot has to do with city planning. Both of these places are stretched out so far, as if they once held a greater city. If you could condense them to 1/3 the size they’d be alright. Just the decay makes them so incredible unappealing.

I’m going toward the rust belt but I know its the same but more. All these places suffer from braindrain, no one wants to fix them because the people smart enough to see the problems just move out.

I’m from Western Washington, and I finally learned why I was so fricking sad all the time.

Besides my abusive father, it’s incredibly depressing here. The weather, the buildings, the rain that seeps into everything, the layers of moss that grow on everything including your car. People aren’t nice either.

        Anonymous

Yep, I grew up in and Seattle and never realized how negatively the wether affected me until I visited warmer climates. Rain can be refreshing at the end of a long summer, but the rain in the pnw is relentless and it wears you down and seeps into you. The gray short rainy days for months on end really don't feel like something humans are supposed to live in.

Pic related, everyone talks about how "beautiful" and "scenic" the pnw is, and that may be true for national parks, but this what your average city looks like for at least 6 months of the year. Gray, dark, dead skeleton trees everywhere. This place should be renamed the "Evergray State"

Sad. I left Seattle twenty years ago. Back then it was a beautiful, fun city with lots to do. A couple of years later, the Democrats stole the gubernatorial election by "finding" just enough votes that had "fallen behind a copier" to hand it to the Democrap candidate (incidentally resulting in more votes being counted from King County than the number of registered voters in the entire county, so more than 100% turnout, which is quite something considering that usually turnout is only around 30% to 60% at best), and it's been downhill ever since. The friends from there I've talked to since then have confirmed that it has turned into a Democrat-run shithole. Street shitting, drug addicts everywhere, "homeless" tents, all overrunning everywhere. There was SOME of that while I was there, but it was confined to a few small areas and they got run out by the cops every few months.

I've always believed if you have a bad time somewhere, it's almost always your fault.

I use to travel all over the country for work, and I always managed to find stuff to like about every place I went to. Sometimes it was some unique scenery, or just a special place to wander around and people watch, but I'm a lousy drunk and get lonely easy, so my standard procedure was to find some dingy little dive bar full of colorful characters where I could make amazing memories and then forget them all later that night.

I hated, hated, hated Los Angeles the first time I went due to the circumstances of my work, but I went another time for vacation and loved the place.

The one city that I don't think has any room for redemption in my heart, though, is Topeka. The land is brown and ugly, and the air is rusty and flat. I always managed to meet people and have a laugh and a good time with some random drunks anywhere else I went, but not in Topeka. Everyone was sad and just seemed...trapped. I would give it a second chance, but man, just being there for a week brought me down a few notches.

I intentionally avoid subjecting myself to shitholes.

That said, I've been in some of the shitty parts of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, and they really are shitholes.

For bad places I've SighSeeeled to, I'd have to say the worst was Koh Chang ("Elephant Island") in Thailand, which I went to because SighSee told me how great it was.

The first night I was there, a rat chewed through my backpack. I ended up spending literally the whole night awake and throwing things at it to try to get it to leave. I ended up moving to another place, a dive lodge, as soon as the sun came up and I could check out and look around for someplace halfway decent. The dive lodge was all poured-concrete walls, so the rats ran around on the roof and fought each other up there instead of running through the rooms.

Contrary to what SighSee told me to expect -- pristine waters in an environmental reserve -- the reserve was being illegally logged to death, and the ocean was full of floating sewage from the resorts.

Anyway, I was glad to get the frick gone from there and go back to Bangkok, which even though it stinks and is an urban hellhole, at least is as advertised.

Granted I'm more familiar with the city since I grew up here; but there are parts even the cops don't go anymore. They get calls and go 'oh its in that block' and never show up. Flint is depressing; but at least its small compared to Detroit. At this point they should lease most of the city out to the military to use as urban warfare training.

Bad call, very awful call. LA is shit, Cincy and especially Indy is underrated and Midwest comfy. Denver while not great is better alone than some of the places you mentioned. I can tell you must be a coasty.

I spent a year in Indianapolis on business. There were a few areas I found cool, but other than that it felt like there wasn't much to do there...what am I missing?

How do I get a green card if I'm on an esta in the United States? I know it's illegal if to intend to adjust status while on an esta but how would I aquire a greencard otherwise? I'm going to visit my American Auntie and uncles soon and I want to live there with them permenantly but since I'm not a direct relative I don't know how I'd be able to. If my Mother became a citizen first would that help?

I've been all over the US aside from the extreme northeast beyond Connecticut. Here's some shitholes:

    >Baltimore
Essentially every part of the city othe than a tiny portion of the central downtown area where rhe aquarium is at is a run down hovel. Was very sad to visit Edgar Allen Poes house and see it completely surrounded by boarded up crackhouses.

    >Gary, IN
Entire place looks like it's covered in motor oil

    >Chicago
Well known for being a literal warzone

    >Portland
Full of junkies, antifa trannies, homeless

    >Seattle
Practically the same as Portland, just bigger. Can't walk anywhere downtown without being accosted by homeless.

    >Denver
Last time I was there the entire lawn in front of the state capital was covered in homeless tents

    >Colorado Springs
Has some nice areas but the south and east side are completely overran with homeless, maybe the most of any city I've ever been to. Literally every corner has a bum and they do shift changes and hand off signs to the next bum to keep a 24/7 presence.

    >Bridgeport, CT
High crime rate, overran with druggies, run down

    >Guam
Another anon mentioned this and I concur. Walk down the main street of Tumon and you will see 1. Shooting range 2. Cowboy clothing store 3. Massage parlor... about five times in a row. A sickening appeasement for jap tourist who want to shoot guns and wear cowboy boots like Merricans.

    >Memphis, TN
Astoundingly high murder rate. Everything is trashed and run down. Has some good BBQ thou.

    >Pearl City, HI
They may have cleaned it up since i lived here yeara ago but there was a park that was completely filled with homeless tents from end to end.

    >Los Angeles
Mostly hated it for the over crowding. Attempted to go to the beach (Huntington) and I couldn't even find one square meter of sand that didn't have some fat lardass already sitting on it.

    >St. Louis
Another well known shithole. Basically everywhere outside of the archway is a run down dangerous hellhole.

        Here's some good places:

        >Tampa
I'm originally from Florida so I'm hugely biased. It's a huge city and has some shitty areas as all big cities do but I think nearby Clearwater is a better beach than Hawaii and St. Pete is immensely comfy.

        >Sarasota
Just south of Tampa. Same area but on a slightly smaller scale, thus less crime. Very comfy.

        >Key West
Maybe the most comfy area in all of the US. Peak cute tropical town.

        >Pensacola/Destin
Has some rough spots but the downtown reminds me of a smaller and less run down New Orleans. Great if you want a chill, old world vibe, plus all of the beaches along the coast from Pcola to Destin are top tier.

        >Nashville
Again, has some rough spots but much of the city and surrounding area is surprisingly nice. I thought it would be filled with hillbilly bumpkins trying to become country stars but those are contained to the downtown, rest of city is filled with harmless hipsters. Opry Mills Opryland Resort is my favorite hotel in the the world, with a massive indoor tropical garden.

        >Gatlinburg. TN
Super laid back mountain town, makes you feel like your in another, better time.

        >Colorado Springs
Despite it also having some shitty parts, there are some great parts. Cheyenne Mountain, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs. Basically everything outside the city itself. Great for winter sports.

        >Austin, TX
I know this place is basically Portland 2.0 but i enjoyed myself last time I was here, just seemed like a lot of fun stuff to do. Plenty of interesting museums and attractions in nearby Dallas and San Antonio too.

        >Honolulu
Gorgeous tropical mountains, chill beaches, tons of water activities like snorkeling and surfing. Lives up to its reputation as a paradise, but only spend a week or two here, else you'll get bored.

        >San Juan, Puerto Rico
PR is a poor man's Hawaii but im a sucker for cities that have an old world vibe. Feels like a European city (as in, tiny cramped roads) but in a tropical setting.

In regards to cities in Colorado, I tell people the same thing about Oregon/Washington: if you're going to these places for the cities, you're making a mistake. The cities are happenstance. The real appeal is the proximity to badass pieces of nature that never lose their zeal. Denver, for example, is crap. I say this as someone who lived there for four years then returned to visit after a decade. The migration of you-know-whos from you-know-where really fricked the place up with their weapons-grade homosexualry. Thankfully, the mountains are literally RIGHT. THERE.

Trona, California. Weird mining town in the desert. It looks deserted at first, like a ghost town, but people actually live there.

Midland, Texas. Picrel is rent prices, and keep in mind this place is four hours from El Paso, four from Dallas, five from Austin, and two from Lubbock. You're trapped there.
If you want to piss off the locals, call it Midessa since it's right next to Odessa which has one of the highest rates of violent crime in Texas. Makes sense when you've been there since there's nothing to do in that entire Permian Basin area except get scalded with oil in 110F weather, do enough meth to be able to pull your teeth out with your fingers, or die in a car wreck from some of the WORST driving I've ever seen in my life, and I've been to Austin, Dallas, and LA.
Funny that OP starts with Flint, because Midessa also has near undrinkable tap water due to excess sediment, and showering with it dries your skin out quickly. Also rots your teeth since you're rubbing sediment on them twice a day. Apparently it's been like that for 20+ years so I guess the city just doesn't fricking care.
The locals seem to take pride in not being as bad as Odessa. Kinda like Cincinnati being proud of not being Detroit. Difference is you legit can barely tell the two cities apart since they're both dusty, run down, and propped up with $500K+ particle board McMansions because "DA OIL FIELD IS BIG MONEY" until it runs dry and they struggle for five years to pay the mansion or their $2K/mo rent.
    >tl;dr
a drug-fueled oil rig town with San Francisco levels of ego and sediment-ridden tap water that I hope becomes the next site for nuclear weapons testing
