No, you're driving through the middle of the state, it's nothing but farms and feed lots and oil wells and truck stops. Oregon isn't much more interesting if you take I-5.

Go up the coast (101). It takes much longer but is completely worth it especially if you're going in the off season. Take it all the way to Astoria, Oregon. The head east from there.

    This is totally idiotic.
Do you know anything about the west coast?

Take the 101 through northern california, then detour through monterey and drive down the 1 in big sur. I haven't driven the 101 up in Oregon so I can't say if it would be worth it to drive that road all the way from Portland, but it's definitely worth it through northern california. It will take more time than the 5, but as the other anons said the 5 doesn't have a lot in the way of scenery.

Shit Black person, what are you doing?

PCH is more scenic but takes a lot longer and you have to plan right. There’s no point doing the slow route in the middle of the night when you can’t see anything.

taking the interstates is a horrible idea, but you have more or less a good route figured out. just do backroads & scenic byways along that whole route and you're golden

I-5 sucks. The PCH is good, but if you want to stay inland, take the 395 up the Owens River Valley to Markleville, then 89 through Lassen to Mt. Shasta, then 97 through Bend to the Columbia River, then I-82 to Boise. 89 and 97 are both super fun roads.

    >would this make for a grand roadtrip?

No. Go along the coast unless you have seen it already. The middle of CA and Oregon are extremely boring and mostly truck routes.

Much of it has burned up also, so you will be seeing tons of aftermath of forest fires, which I think is kind of depressing.

There is this whole 3 hours stretch around mammoth that is nothing but burned out shit

This is the route you have to take. The coast is too fricking amazing to skip. There are waterfalls all along the route between Avila and Carmel. If you do one thing in California, do Yosemite national park. Stay in Curry Village for at least 2 nights. I also highly recommend South Lake Tahoe.

frick yes. i did the same ten years ago. skip LA, make it separate trip later. start in SF, although you might not want to spend a lot of time there. any time you've shaved off can be better spent in OC taking your time meandering from town to town. idaho is beautiful as well.

Do this. After Santa Barbra, skip LA and go to Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and San Diego. Google maps wouldnt let me add more stops to the trip. Entire driving time should be about ~30 hours

    My advice:

Take the coast going to SLO and San Francisco, since it's just too good NOT to go along. Then make your way inland through Redding to Mt. Shasta, and continue to Crater Lake in Oregon. Go up the highway to Bend, cross over the mountains towards Salem, then reach the coast once again to Tillamook and Astoria. Once there, you can turn back to Portland and slink back down I-5. Plenty of shit to see, probably want at least 10-14 days to enjoy your time and not feel rushed.
