Zagreb, Croatia

Ok SighSee I'll make it quick: Are there any sights worth seeing that's a day trip's worth from Zagreb? And other cool places to check out in Zagreb aside from the usual tourist hotspots?
I already have Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke on my plans.
I can't go long distance so Split and Dubrovnik are off the cards.
I'll be there by May coming from Slovenia. Thanks in advance!

Dude... I live in fricking Delaware and I still find interesting weekend trips within a two hour radius of me. If you're in a new country and can't find interesting stuff I'm not sure what to tell you. Yes, even local history/art museums can be hidden gems.

    Get inspired.

That's the point of the thread, to inspire OP.

The museum of Broken Relationships is an interesting one. Its a good mixture of funny, sad and heartfelt. It's one of my favourite museums.

Zagreb is good for that sort of stuff. Lots of weird niche museums and sights if you look deep enough. Nice architecture. Otherwise not a lot to do there.

      >The museum of Broken Relationships
I've seen this as a must go in Zagreb. Will definitely check it out.

Was just in Zagreb two months ago. Extremely comfy city, but was very cold though when I was there. Stay near Jelacic Square, its the center of the city and very cool. The whole city reminds me a lot of the atmosphere of vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines, has a very gothic and "Dracula" like feel to it, especially in the dark winters and nightime. Eat at and support the old school mom and pop family restaurants where everything tastes home-cooked in large portions, avoid the shitty trend of cringy, wannabe "Instagram" restaurants that place more emphasis on "presentation" than on the food- my filter is if they serve food on a square plate then its going to be absolute trash. The restaurants I liked to eat at were Croation barbeque restaurants known as "Konobas" which are the main local staples of their food. Any place that serves a "Mixed Meat Plate" (which is fricking amazing), Sopska salad (also amazing) and Ajvar sauce (also amazing) is going to be legit. You probably already know this though if you are coming from Slovenia, because its generally the same all over the Balkans. Have fun, I wish I had more time in Zagreb myself, I was only there for 3 days.

      >Stay near Jelacic Square
I'm considering staying at Hotel Dubrovnik. Looks like a decent hotel by the square itself with great reviews. Did you stay there too?

Any restaurant recommendations? When you mentioned old school restaurants, it sounds like a hole-in-the-wall type of places so they might not be easy to locate/away from tourists hotspots.

Meh, not like mine's any better as I only have 4 days, but thanks alot for your advice!

I most definitely recommend this local, mom and pop Croatian restaurant in Zagreb....

Gostionica Restoran Purger. Amazing home made food and super humble, friendly staff. Anything on the menu is bomb, but make sure you definitely get the Sopska Salad with whatever you get.

I was there too. I also recommend it.

Gostionica Ficlek is also a place I went to. If possible, I'd eat lunch at Purger, and dinner at Ficlek. Everything else I had was either overpriced or mediocre.

I was there three weeks ago for four days. One day is enough, pretty much spent the remainder of my time with a girl who was also going there. One day is enough. City center is very small. There's a cool mushroom museum which is basically some dude's flat. I thought most things were expensive and that was me coming from Austria as my last destination.

5/10 it was ok not bad not great

this. zagreb is a b-tier mitteleuropa city. on par with ljubljana and bratislava. if u have been to prague or vienna there's really nothing new to discover or experience here aside from the medvednica mountain. maksimir park is also cool if ur into the whole frolicking in the nature thing.

Went Halloween of 2021, there's some cool ass abandoned hospitals just outside of the city I think are worth checking out. The one I went to was Brestovac Sanatorium. It was cool to see the surrounding towns as well and a little bit of the nature. Was old enough that there were trees growing on the roof. Also I think they do paintball there sometimes if you're into that kinda thing.

I can’t remember does that city die in the winter or the summer?
I went during the wrong season (I’m pretty sure it was the summer) and the place was deserted. All the locals told us everyone spend that season at their cabins.

Must be the summer because it was full of people. I went from 27.12 till 02.01, so recently.
