I remember paying 2 euros for a 16 bed hostel in Madrid 10 years ago. I will never do it again though. Room was almost full and 5 people were snoring. Few of them were snoring HARD. No idea why the frick people don't get checked for this conditionore often. It's not fricking normal to snore loudly.
Didn't really have a choice, no luck with a couchsurfing host and no other dorms available

I blame migrants looking for cheap places to stay. Affordable hostels filled up with low-value male migrants; they wake up early, make noise, leave a mess, act creepy around backpacking chicks. Hostels had to jack up the rates to filter them out. Hostels in the US are now $50+ per night.
This is true about migrants. There's 1.4 billion Indians in the world. Even if it's only a small percentage of their population, there's simply so many of them that they have a huge diaspora studying, working and traveling abroad. Now us westerners from relatively small population countries are competing with them when it comes to booking places to stay, and the demand is starting to exceed the supply, so prices go up.

They speak English because their own languages are useless. I tried to learn French and German when I was in high school. Lots of Youtubers for practice, all just put things US content in English with no subtitles. TV shows and movies from France or Germany? They don't have any that are good. You will soon realize these countries have not produced culture for 100 years, they just consume USA culture.

Why would I want to aim for fluency when everyone speaks English? Even on the internet the only internets that matter are the English internet, Japanese internet and Chinese internet.
