i have extreme experience preparing and fermenting stuff. mead can be good, i personally dont like cider and imho it is just much easier to make a basic drinkable beer than it is to make a drinkable cider that isnt 100% for just producing alcohol. rice wine is also a huge pain in the ass, but is actually a better result than cider again imho. making hard seltzers is a possibility, though ive only tried 2 or 3 times. the key thing with making a sugar water/hard seltzer that is drinkable would be to have the ability to truly strip it and filter it very thoroughly.
budlight is license produced by some inbev company, prolly labatt and it is about $2.50 per 473ml can lol. buying a 24 pack is simply that price x 24, there are no bulk purchase discounts in canada for alcohol.

re: making your own. - istarted a long time ago, took some years off at different times. but by now im at the point where i can absolutely make products better than the average mediocre as hell ontario craft brewer, and on par with solid-good quality US craft brewers. i could give a whole bunch of pointers, but i wont unless there is strong interest. point being i make a 5% beer with no costs cut at $1.10 per 500ml (no 473 bullshit). stronger beers are often better value, being only like $1.40 up to $1.75/500ml to make even an 8% quality beer.
and i get what you mean about it being high in calories - so ive been aiming for the driest beers i can without getting messed up flavours. i really knew i was onto something when i did a 4 hour mash of 100% viennaand got the FG down to 1.003. and it still tasted completely excellent - malty, not thin or unbalanced. so aiming for lagers under 1.010 these days
even the homebrew supply stuff has been going up in price though.

Just start making your own wine properly, and get a wine box to keep it cool and out of the light. It will last as long as you want as long as you don't take shortcuts during the fermentation process. Then you'd have it for your next craving.

in the beginning you want to have some air in the mix. it helps with yeast reproduction. if im using apple juice cartons or something, i'll dump them in by squeezing the carton hard into the fermenter to mix air through, then pitch the yeast. but yeah, once its on the way, dont expose to the air if you can help it.
