I was in Shanghai up until around May or so, will be going back August of '24. Undeniably not what it was pre-covid but I'm holding out hope that it'll slowly but surely get better after the reopening. Given the Rainy meme, you were probably in China in the Hu Jintao/early Xi era? It's a whole new place now. Significantly less free (even by China standards) but significantly more modern, easy to get around, people aren't insufferable about you being white anymore, everything's on your phone, etc.

Back when I first moved there in 2019 (so keep in mind, I'm new as shit all things considered), ESPECIALLY up north/in smaller cities and rural areas, there was near constant staring, sometimes people would just walk up to you and touch you/your hair/your dick (never happened to me, thankfully), you were very clearly the topic of discussion when you were around people (particularly if you couldn't speak Chinese, which I could thankfully), etc. It's much less like that now; I think covid spooked people about foreigners, as well as there generally being more exposure to us nowadays in media and such. The stuff that I described above still happens sometimes (most of the country has never seen a white person IRL before), but I got stared at a shit ton in Shanghai in 2019 and it doesn't really happen anymore to me aside from the occasional double take (usually because I'm a ginger rather than just being because I'm white).
FWIW, this means being a coomer has become much harder there too, but still totally doable if you know where to look/try hard enough. That's not my scene though. I hope this was coherent enough, I'm tired as shit. Will try to elaborate if/when I pop back in the thread if you have any more questions.

. There hasn't been a massive influx of Russians tbh, I've met FAR more Kazakhs in China (both domestic and from Kazakhstan) who also happen to speak Russian because of the USSR. I agree with
that it's primarily social media's fault, but also people are richer than they used to be (and, yes, still fairly conservative), so they don't feel the need to frick bairen like they used to.
