    probably the philippines
you can get an okay by flip standards apartment for $200 a month, you can eat for $200 a month, electric/bills $100 a month, incidentals $50 a month, visa $50 a month iirc
that leaves you $400 to play around with, which is enough for casual simple dating

50,000 php is about $1000, and 50k php is a 'decent living' for a single man in his 20's/30's, you can even support a family on it there

something similar is doable in cambodia also, but the language barrier is huge and the women are more fussy/c**ty and the men are more dangerous

thailand will give you visa problems after awhile, but if you don't care about that and just go off grind and live illegally in the country, you can easily live in isaan for 1k a month indefinitely

      Cambodian men are dangerous? Actually?

        Anonymous

They are more dangerous than thai or Filipino men, by far. Cambodia is extremely poor and riddled with drug addicts and small time gangsters who won't hesitate to roll you or break and enter if they think you are vulnerable.

The bar district in PP for example has much more regular and open violent crime than anywhere similar in Thailand or PH. It's a country full of desperate and very poor people with nothing to lose and little to no likelihood of local police ever finding or catching them if they make it away from the scene. There is no respect for white foreigners, and they don't worship you. They want your money but ultimately you are a nuisance.

My income is higher than that but I spent years coasting around SEA and keeping my expenses under 1k.
Hands down, my top choice for 1k/month is Vietnam. Unfortunately, the visa is a problem these days (used to be 90 day or even 12 months for burgers, now just 30 days and you need to exit and re-enter).
Cambodia is nice but doesn't tick everyone's boxes. Philippines is good but your 1K won't go far unless you're in the countryside. I understand Indonesia is good on that budget but I've never been. Thailand is doable but you'd be budgeting harder than Vietnam and Cambodia. Since you mention women, you probably don't want to stay in Laos. Malaysia is a bit more expensive than Thailand.
There's probably many options in LATAM but I only know Asia except for Dominican Republic. You could live very well in DR and not need to worry about visas, just pay a flat fee when you leave after overstaying.

Vietnam is easy if you have a legit job. Work visa is good for two years each time.

Ah well nevermind, back to vacations then.

Could under $1000 work for Bangkok?

Bangkok is more expensive than Isaan. If $850 is heading towards poverty (relative to a Westerner) in Isaan, then I'd imagine $1000 is going to be a similar experience in Bangers.

That’s the thing, you aren’t living in some flyover ghost town in a mid west hellscape. You are in a high rise condo right on the beach and are surrounded by thousands of delicious brown girls. Beer is cheap, entertainment is cheap. If you wanted a pure hand to mouth existence like what $1000 would get you in the states you could actually do it in Thailand for $500 if you went poverty tier with cheaping out.

The above quoted post seems to say otherwise but I don't know what his standards are

That’s Bangkok man. That’s like comparing Manhattan to Virginia Beach. You can go post up in Hua Hin or any other beach village for $1000 a month easily and live comfy as shit. Frick, even in Pattaya if you wanted.

So $850 is a reasonable amount to live in the Phils, somewhere like Cebu or Dumaguete, and date normal girls?

            >dumaguete
Stop listening to the boomers. Only the old, fat, blownout retiree's go to duma. Whenever you hear someone saying "Dumaguete is great!" on the internet, 100% chance it's a bald headed boomer. DO NOT listen to them. Dumaguete is not as souless and depressing as Angeles, but it's sad in it's own way. Dumaguete is social security central.

All the girls in dumaguete have already been fricked by at least three other boomers who are twice, or three times, your age. Why do you want that? Duma is only for expired boomers, thats it.

I understand not wanting to be completely "alone", since most flips can't hold an intelligent conversation and you may want somebody to mentally stimulate you from time to time, but duma is not the place. Start in cebu. Travel around. Visit multiple places. Ilo ilo isn't far, CdO isn't far, or try duma and see for yourself why you shouldn't go to duma.

If you stay away from cowboy, patpong and Nana yes. Easily done.
That budget is hella good as long as you stay away from bars and prostitutes. If you're doing that, what's the point being there? Even if you get a normal Thai girlfriend (doubt) she wants money. They are all only about money. Money number one.

        Anonymous

Just to be contrarian, it's possible to date a "normal" Thai girl on a budget. They're not as easy to find as the lower class girls (and she probably won't be a stunner), but the middle class ones are out there. She'll probably earn about $300-500/month at her job, and if you want your money to go far, you get tips from her on how to handle it. Find one in her early to late 20s and she's probably hooping to land a husband and get pregnant. She'll put the time in on a good prospect.
I agree that the money is too low to be realistic. It's okay for existing and even being very comfortable (with the help of a local girl) in Thailand, but it doesn't cover any emergencies, travel costs will be extra, and foreigners need to pay out of pocket for any kind of medical or health issue.
Even leaving aside Thai culture and mercantilism of the majority of the woman farang interact with, other SEA countries have lower CoL and 1k will go further there.

Why would a Thai girl be interested in a foreigner who's living there on a tourist visa besides money? No girl wants a 1-6 month boyfriend

            >No girl wants a 1-6 month boyfriend

Tell it to the enthusiastic college age women I have taken around the country with me.

They are happy to have a romantic and exciting fling, as long as you aren't some gross old fat frickup.

              Anonymous

Probably with that is they're expecting you to continue in some kind of long-distance relationship format when you go home. Frick that. Been there, done it, was a massive PITA.

            Anonymous

There's lots of Thai girls who want relationships with foreigners and there aren't enough foreigners to fill that demand. A lot of the foreigners who do arrive are fat, retired old men who are more interested in paying prostitutes to leave than cohabiting with a young woman. These girls don't want to meet a 2 week tourist but they are very interested in guys living in the kingdom through visa runs. Their hope is he'll be the one to give them a ring, half-farang babies, and a better life. To them, a foreigner earning 1k/month is probably earning more money than their boss, and most foreigners come across as kinder and sweeter than the other men in their life.

Plenty of Western guys in Thailand with normal girlfiends that don't give them any money. Not all Thai women are gold diggers, you just have to be very picky. It takes effort but it's not impossible.

What you are doing is called projection: assuming everyone else has similar thoughts, feelings, abilities and/or motivations as yourself. There are different kinds of projection, depending on the extreme you take it to. Yours might be more of a social projection, which is mostly harmless and commonly observed in people with poor social skills and limited relationships. A more serious one is psychological projection, which is often observed in people with serious personality disorders.
The important thing is you become aware of what you're doing and try to stop assuming everyone posting on /trv is like yourself.

Pretty much any country, and any city within said country where housing expenses are around 500 bucks tops. Very rarely does food cost more than 300usd/month, leaving you with 200 bucks for the rest. c**ts that fit the bill include the ones mentioned in the thread, but many other fit the bills, e.g eastern europe, latam or north africa.

You realize that 300 usd for food means you only have 10 dollars a day for food? Even assuming you live in SEA and eat street food 3 meals a day and don't ever buy yourself anything to drink that could be just breaking even with 300 per month

I had a big ass English breakfast (4$) a couple large convenience store beers for lunch (3$) and a noodle bowl for dinner (3$) in Thailand. $10 is more than enough. If I had just ate out of the 7-11 I coulda done it for cheaper.

Beer is filling and calorie dense. I worked remote there so my lunch time was actually the end of my day after being awake at 3 am. My routine was wake up at 1 or 2 am get a noodle bowl from a late night joint, work till 9 am, get breakfast, then smash a couple brewskies on the beach before I went to sleep. Weekends I’d wake up earlier, around 8 pm so I could go coom.

Nah, you are still getting a really nice apartment and eating out every night for $1000 a month. You could easily trim fat by not drinking or buying groceries. I can’t even think of the kind of shithole in the US you could rent for $1000, let alone actual expenses. A shoebox apartment in my city is $1300 minimum and that’s not even with utilities.
