Wagyu is a meme, and this is coming from someone who has had it multiple times from "actual restaurants" while in Japan. A good grass-fed steak from a local butcher in NA and Europe is genuinely leagues above wagyu.

          Anonymous

listen kid you don't know shit if you're saying "grass fed" steak is the best thing out there lmao. Prime cut american steak isn't grassfed, the best stuff in America is grain finished or whatever. Grassfed American steaks are good, prime cut American steaks are great but A5 wagyu is insanely good, so tender u can pull it apart with chopsticks

            >Grassfed American steaks are good, prime cut American steaks are great but A5 wagyu is insanely good, so tender u can pull it apart with chopsticks
You know these places exist all over the south and middle of the country right? You know steak places other than Texas Roadhouse and Applebees make steak right? You know just being "can pull it apart with chopsticks" doesn't mean all that much.

Yes wagyu has unique characteristics, yes it's good, but there are tons of places selling very high quality steak. Besides Kobe Wagyu is specifically a breed of cow that was crossbred with western cows to make it more fatty, Hida Wagyu is more pureblood japanese beef.

Holy shit. Either good bait or actually fricking stupid. Go to Kansas City by the stockyards that have been open for fricking ever and will make you whatever with a wide verity of steak.

Honestly nothing beats the shit you can get in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Montana, or Alaska in terms of flavor, cut, and value. Like it's good the first time and I like visiting my friends michelan star place in takayama, but holy shit is it often not worth the hype.

I've had probably each regions cut, breed, and what not of waygu ranging from some of the best of my life for a 3500 yen A5 cut to some of the best dishing out $300 for the grand prix deals at places. It's the truth, don't get me wrong I like going out for a nice steak dinner here and there, but I also like doing that at home. Paying 7500 yen for 300g of meat just gets meh to me at the very least. Yeah I recommend trying it, if in Takayama go to Butchers it's very very good and the staff is weeb friendly. Try wagyu for yourself but if you're spending over 50 dollars for a plate I question what you are getting for.

Just don't think it's going to be like :O !!! yt recation face for clicks. Eat it slow, if they have a beer menu ask for the pairing they recommend, don't go in on an empty stomach IMO because you'll eat it faster than you should.

If you are up in Hokkaido I would try horse wagyu if you can still find it, haven't been able post pandemic to locate it as the place I got Horse, Whale, Bear, Deer, and what not closed. Loved that place they had all the animals and all the cuts of them.

I am from Canada and at one point my parents grill AAA steaks from Costco for my entire childhood.

My siblings and I did some comparison between Wagyu and Australian beef from an all you can eat BBQ shop in japan.we all prefer the Australian beef over the Wagyu since the Australian beef has more beef taste. The Wagyu has much more fat marble and melts in your mouth, but with less meat fiber the meat taste is just not enough.

Yeah but... it melts in your mouth, your paying for a foodgasm that you can't experience anywhere else in the world from any other beef in the world. Everything else fails to live up to that standard, when I go eat A5 Wagyu I'm not just doing it because the texture and taste, I'm doing so that I can tell others how much they are missing.

Well this thread blew up, so other than so good melts in your mouth or cut it with chopsticks can someone tell me exactly why wagyu is so good? I understand marbling, I understand fat, I understand it's good but like why is it so much better than any steak out there. What am I missing, I've had it and it just seems to be good but I don't know if I'd spend that much on it again.

Am I missing something or is it one of those conversations that someone constantly moves the goal posts on? Like when I went to Los Angeles and had In n Out but wasn't impressed, it's good but I don't get the circlejerk of it.With the constant "oh you didn't have it so and so" Mutts or weebs have weird priorities when it comes to food.

In all honesty, the best food in Japan that the rest of the world gets mogged at is kebab. I don't know what it is but I am dumbfounded by how good that stuff is.

Wagyu is overrated, it's very tender and the marbling is world class, but the beef flavor is seriously lacking. Best tasting beef is actually from older milk cows like jerseys and Holsteins.

No one is really saying Wagyu is bad, just that it's pretty overpriced and overhyped for what you get. There are good places you can often get cheap A5 but even then those are few and far between often with some catch.

What people are saying is that for quality, cut size, and overall price you can get a far better steak in other places

The best I've had were rein and roe deer steaks, so beef isn't my favorite. For beef I would would vote for New Zealand. I don't think the meat itself is too different from US beef, however their sides are incomparably better.

yeah it seems a bit 'out there' but when you think about it, it's really not
Volcanic soil and clean air (for the most part) = good grass
good grass + low-stress, 'free roaming' cattle = good beef
Obviously theres a bunch of other factors in there, but overall you get the idea.

spend a few days on Tanna if you can, do the volcano tour to Mt Yasur, do the inland river tour and generally relax. it was still a rustic island when i went (power goes off at 10pm) but it really was a nice place to go

Efate is the main island and the major cruise destination. Avoid cruise days in town if you can, everything doubles or triples in price. Depending on the cruise line in town, the eye candy is delivered to your resort (pick a childfree resort for your sanity)

Espiritu santo is the dive destination. get certified beforehand if you can. had friends go there and absolutely love it

Ambrym is a place I'd like to go next. hike up the volcano, see the lava pit, etc

I live in Japan and cook at home a lot with beef.
My opinion is that its a bit expensive.
Certain cuts are very delicious and very fatty, like butter but not quite - way better - but you cant eat much or you'll feel really full of oil in the stomach. best enjoyed with a smaller stake. only a really fat fucing idiot would sit down to a 200g slice of the real fatty stuff.
The leaner cuts which are still fatty by global standards are ideal. you can have a good sized one and its perfect.

Really fatty stuff geat for yakiniku with lots of other cuts too.
Kobe beef is high tier but its basically a foreigner meme. It's not that popular here for Japanese. that would be kagoshima, which is actually the best that you can get. the Kobe meme is just to get money out of foreigners abroad for a less good product with smart advertising by those farmers - and it keeps the price of Kagoshima and similar not sky high for locals.
If you go to an actual 5 star steak restaurant in the west you'll not see Kobe beef it will be Kagoshima if its not a meme steakhouse.

One thing i think Japanese ruin heir beef with is shabu shabu or nabe. they take really nice fatty beef and just end up boiling it, scooping out all the fat from the surface and you get left with what would have been an amazing piece of meat if fried or cook some other way end up bland and stripped of flavour...
