Boomer parents afraid of travel

How do you deal with uneducated boomers being afraid on your behalf? It's fricking annoying as hell. My mom does this every time I go somewhere as if I'm going to a war zone.

a lot of 60something year old boomer women are absolutely horrified at the thought of taking a plane. my mother was like that, and my father-in-law’s wife is like that, just off the top of my head. they would rather drive across all of america then ever take a plane, all out of abject fear

My parents got all sorts of upset when I told them I was visiting Sri Lanka a few years ago. By the way they reacted you would have thought I was personally going to fight the Tamil Tigers... even though the civil war ended in 2009. I think it's just them trying to show they care, which is kind but grating

My parents are highly educated, well-informed, pretty well-traveled “boomers” (as a middle-aged [Gen X] man who gets ‘OK boomered’ all the time by my sarcastic kids, I will never not be annoyed by the expansion of this term—my parents are actually a little too old to be boomers, but genuine boomers are far older than most of this board’s parents), and they still worry about me. This is what parents do.

My parents lived and worked in South Africa and Pakistan, and they still told me to watch my back in Nairobi, Mexico City, etc. They even warned me to watch out for pickpockets in Barcelona. Because the risks, however avoidable, aren’t imaginary, and, again, parents worry, because they (now I should say we) have no choice.

I told them (and tell them), “Don’t worry, I’ll be careful!” and leave it at that.

Rio’s dangers sometimes get sensationalized and exaggerated, obviously. But they’re not fictional. I would (or will) tell my kid to be careful there too (and I’ve been there).

I hope and assume I’ve just taken bait and OP’s text exchange isn’t real. If it is, OP, you just sound like a dick.

Rio has terrible crime by pretty much any metric. They actually have more murders than any city on earth. 3,000+ homicides in 2022 for a city with a population of 6 million.

Compare that to Madrid Spain, a city some people on here have said is dangerous. They have a population of 3 million and they had 22 murders in 2022.

If you're comparing Rio to Madrid, I think it's fair to say Rio is fricking dangerous.

        Anonymous

Surely. I said that Rio/s dangers are real, even if they do sometimes get exaggerated, not that Rio is perfectly safe. It's the sort of place one needs to be a bit more careful than average. But most people who visit (including me, twice so far) get out unscathed.

The murder rate is indeed terrifying, but lost in that statistic is the fact that very few of those victims were random tourists (although a few unlucky people were). It's mostly unfortunate locals, by a wide margin, in Rio as everywhere..

My boomer parents keep being scared on my behalf because of natural disasters in Japan. Sure a big earthquake would suck, but
    it's like they don't understand the odds/risk.

Every parent tends to do that. Whenever I travel, my parents end up calling me constantly, and honestly, it gets on my nerves. I'm still trying to figure out how to ask them to ease up on the calls without coming across as ungrateful. I know it's because they care and love me, but it's a bit overwhelming. BTW, which fintech company would you recommend for making payments in Japan?

        Anonymous

Can't really give advice on that other than own experience.
Since I,m from Europe I just withdrew yen with my debit card, topped up an IC card and paid everything with that.

US has all kinds of credit card reward programmes, so they probably have better options.

          Anonymous

          Okay
I use PayPal, Revolut, and Tap for most payments, depending on the location. I heard that Paidy allows consumers in Japan to make online purchases without needing a credit card or pre-registration. will look into that.

Reiterates that she loves you like 10 times. Your mom seems like a Saint on earth and you should treasure her instead of talking shit about her on a Siberian pigeon enthusiast forum, you absolute autist.
