Choice Asian locations for remote working

hi SighSee

I found a job at a big tech company in China and they have this policy for foreign contractors that they can spend 1 month out of the year working remotely, but I need to stick to Beijing time. Which means I'll need to stay in Asia to make my work feasible.

although it says we can work remote, this allowance is intended for me to see family or seek medical attention. they don't really see this as an "extended vacation" but many other people do it on the low down.

Japan and Thailand has already been discussed to death. How about places like Korea, Malaysia or Taiwan? But I'll also consider Japan and Thailand, so if you only got good insights for those 2 I'll also consider it.

I only got this 1 month remote chance once a year, so I gotta make it count guys.

If you work in China then visit Taiwan, you will be shitcanned when you return at best, detained and questioned by secret police is more likely.

Whatever you do, as a foreigner, do not hop between Taiwan and China.

that's only if you're a PRC citizen, there is no official ban in China to visit Taiwan, your admittance is still allowed. it's not like trying to visit Pakistan or Malaysia with a Israeli stamp.

but I guess with OP working at a Chinese tech company and likely has his residence permit stamped in his passport he'd get that shitcan treatment in Taiwan because espionage in Taiwan is rife in the tech industry. especially around Semi conductors.

No one on either side cares if you travel between the two. This is true whether you are Chinese, Taiwanese, or a foreigner (ML Chinese resident or not)

They actually do, I've been detained twice in China for travelling to Taiwan/possessing a Taiwanese ARC. They miraculaously stopped caring from my 3rd border crossing on though

How long ago was this? I traveled between Shanghai and Taipei once a month for around three years and never once had an issue. I have a hard time believing they gave you shit *only* because of travel to Taiwan/having an ARC when (pre covid) a hundred such direct flights full of such people deplaned across China daily

I never understand the "oooo seeseepee will get ya" larp when anyone can literally look up how many passenger planes go back and forth every fricking hour.

there hasn't been such a thing for several years
i've been to both israel and malaysia in the past few years. no issues at all

university students from both countries study in the other country with no issue. taiwanese don't lie mainland tourists but, covid excepted, there is no issue going between them. business men and women travel between with ease.

    >Dont hop between Taiwan and China
Yeah, its only the 2nd most popular visa run route with a million direct flights per day. Pretty risky

China has done some frickery with Taiwans internet connections before. It takes a little while for even the best ISP to reroute to Japan's link or alternative. China is also bad because their great firewall can just decide your resource is not allowed and click boom done.

Korea and Japan are both good
Manila is also good as most Typhoons get torn up getting to it or simply go north
Thailand absolutely sucks for power reliability with monsoons, typhoons, and various other BULLSHIT needed for low latency work

Korea is fricking awful, soulless fricking bug country full of vain fricking pricks. If you aren't Korean, they don't want you. Expensive, too.
Consider Taiwan or Japan before Korea.

can you elaborate more about that? I get conflicting views here about how it's about as cheap as Japan and but they found Koreans fun and more spirited than Japanese with better English.

I don't know what the frick they're on, crackheads who spend a few days in Seoul clubbing or some shit. Korea is fricking AWFUL to try to live in. I'm serious. If you're visiting for a few days w/e.
If you try to live there a month you will experience racism & discrimination (even if you're White) and you won't be able to use any of the services Koreans use. No online delivery, no online shopping, no fricking anything. And it's more expensive than Japan. I should know, I've compared the two.

Korea is fine for digital nomad but boring for vacation spot.spending a month for a hotel room for about 300 bucks at noble residence, foods cheap and weekends are fun. If anything the boring part can help limit distractions, Jeju is peak comfy to stay in as well as not that expensive.

Koreans won't pretend like Japanese do and fake kindness you're just another white dude.

How do you go about getting a hotel (or even somewhere else really) for those kind of prices...? When I look at hotels in Korea they're typically like £50-70/night. Am I missing something really obvious or what? Not just a Korea specific question too

Malaysia is pretty comfy. I've lived in both KL and Penang. If you like spicy food you'll probably enjoy the food here more than anywhere else. Chinese girls here are the typical autistic type, the Malays are curious about white guys and the Indians quite shy. It's on a similar level to Thailand but not as wild.

Chinese girls are the same as anywhere else. Need to be doing alright for them to consider you. Quite materialistic, but not too bad if you're white. Malays are conservative in public but little animals in private. Hard to meet them in public but dating apps are great for that. Not the best country for cooming, so if that's your priority I'd stick to Thailand, but Malaysia is nice for a break.
