I've never been on a cruise ship and I'm attempting to go on one with my wife on our anniversary. I've heard bad things about carnival and I don't have buckets of money to do something like princess or Norwegian from the looks of it. What experiences do you guys have.
I would go for Royal Caribbean. Prices are somewhat comparable to Carnival but the product is overall better. The unfortunate thing about cruises is that they're too accessible (cheap) to keep the riff raff out, so you have to spend a little more so you don't see those kinds of "people" on your cruise.

What do you mean by riff raff and "those kinds of people"? I don't understand.
spring breakers, teens, joggers, lunchtime rowdies, aspiring scholars, good boys, you name them
Carnival is fine as long as you don't do their cheap cruises. Avoid anything under 4 nights
Is there any guides out there as to which boats are "new" and worth it? A common complaint seems to be old boats that didn't get refurbished yet.
If you don't want to do "trashy" cruising and prefer a more "classy" experience, luxury European cruise lines will be the way to go.
I personally plan to do a transatlantic on queen mary 2 next year. But it's a formal ship so dining requires formal attire unless you want to order room service (included in the cost of fare)
If you aren't picky about where you go, you can snap up a cheap last minute cruise a few weeks before your anniversary on one of the "better" cruise lines.

As for Norwegian, there are always sales/offers. You can get a $250 off if you buy a $500 gift certificate.

There are also $500/$750 NCL gift certificates if you download the myvegas apps and an old phone to autospin slot apps for a few hours a day.
I kinda feel like sneaking in some extra booze because I'm an unrepentant poorgay, are Rum Runner flasks legit? I can't abuse the wine allowance because it's a charter that explicitly cancels out that portion of the cruise contract.
This is why I prefer sleeper train travel, on amtrak at least, you're allowed to bring your own alcohol to consume in your room.
Try Cunard if you want a classic experience. That said, why do you want to go on a cruise? What are you hoping for?
