Does anyone else here have overbearing parents?

Does anyone else here have overbearing parents? I am trying to plan my first solo trip to latin america and I have no idea how I would approach my parents about this. I might go with the approach that I am travelling with a friend but there might be too much that goes wrong with this. They are boomers who think that anywhere that isn't Western Europe and the anglosphere is a failed state shithole. Any help anons?

My parents told me to go. They know these countries are shitholes and wanted me to be grateful for being American.

      >Americans have to go Brazilian favelas and risk getting murdered by some macaco for a 50 USD watch to feel better about living in lawless zoos like Chicago, Detroit, NYC and LA

If you're an adult and you're travelling at your own expense it's just a matter of you asserting your independence and telling them you appreciate their concern but they need to give you your own space and freedom.

Show them a YT video of where you're planning to go. Should calm them down.

these, but also show them that you are a responsible adult who knows how to look after yourself

If you are naive enough to want to be friends with everyone you meet because woah travel is so awesome, than your parents' concerns are very well-founded.

You only need to show yourself that you are a responsible adult. Some regions of the world are very Darwinian when it comes to stupid motherfrickers, and Latin America is one of them. If you have big balls, you can usually tough your way out, but to be both stupid and chickenshit, you are asking for whatever you get.

I guarantee your parents aren’t as overbearing as you think they are, Anon.

By the sounds of things, they’re just looking out for you.

We all think we’re mature enough to handle sketchy situations, or that they won’t happen to us, until you’re faced with a gun at your head or waking up unconscious in the hospital needing stitches after being beaten for your possessions.

The reality is, this shit happens. You may think that you accept those things, in the unlikely event that one of those things happens to you, but your parents will find it hard to come to terms with.

This is very true. Some of us don’t realise this until reality hits us in the face tbh

Just show them a video like said and explain what you're gonna be doing, that's being fair. If you're an adult they should understand that and if they see other tourists online have been there it'll probably calm them down. Is this your first solo trip ever or your first solo trip to Latin America? If it's your first solo trip ever and you're a young guy going to Latin America I can understand why they'd worry

they are right and you should not go there alone first, and if you do go, you should pick a safer country/region like Thailand if you're smarter or Uruguai to start if you insist on LATAM.

Yes. That's why I became financially independent from them as soon as I was able to. I still try to be nice with them, but eg. I would never announce travel plans in advance. They get my rough itinerary via e-mail as soon as I land abroad, just as a safety precaution.
They were able to improve a bit, they know if they don't send a panicky idiotic e-mail back, then I add them to my daily photo dump e-mail group. Keps them happy enough, keeps me safe.

Well to be fair they're not exactly wrong..

To clarify I was planning on CDMX and Merida, and maybe Buenos Aires after. Not trying to turn into a scolpmaxxed passport bro

Ignore them and go, don't tell them too early so you have less to ignore.

Why are you discussing it with your parents in the first place? Are you not an adult? Do you expect them to finance your trip?
If the answer is no, why do you think there needs to be a discussion beyond "I'm going to X for this long"

Just don’t tell them, kek. Notbing will happen to you. Even if cops chade you the latinamerican countries wont give a FRICK. Trust me ive done exactly this. Make sure you have your own bank account/phone account/credit cards, your parents could try and cancel you otherwise.

Mine are overbearing but you have to ignore it. Parents can do this weird thing where they try to turn you into a permanent child while also shaming you for not being an adult and using that lack of growth as justification to continue having authority over you.

You need to cut that ASAP.

If youre over 18 why the frick does it matter what they say or think. Dont even tell them, or do next time you see them, your call.
