Expat in Ecuador

My mother, aged 69, has gotten this idea in her head that she wants to emigrate to Ecuador from the US. Why no where else in LatAm, IDK. She speaks fluent Spanish and may be able to blend in. She wants me to help, but I am not sure that it is right for her. Does anyone have any advice?

Does she want a 24 year old latin lover too? It's probably gonna be really easy for her. I just know most older people emigrate because of cheaper medical care. In ecuador if you have some proofen monthy income then she can get the retirement visa. Feels like the goverment would be helpful and actually tries to not get her killed.

Not sure about the latin lover part lol. Her income is not that great in the US. Just SS, but she has decent cash and investments.

seems like you need at least $800 an month to get the visa.

Hmm, I was thinking about this as well. I might "rent" her home, which she owns outright. I am happy just to throw her a few hundred a month. If they allow her SS to be part of that income that should go over $800.

they just need official papers that state any monthly income, so idk if fake income from family members count or any local income you might get. Is she one of those boomer housewives that never worked to pay into ss?

Quite the opposite, she worked her ass off after my parent's divorce. It wouldn't be really fake, since I would be actually living there.

wouldn't the ss pay be much higher then? I have no idea how ss works though. Anyway, alternative is just by investing in property

This. You can also get Ecuadorian citizenship when you a buy a property worth $25k or more. The health system is one of the best in the Americas.

I think they do, the plan is geared towards 1st world retirees.

I'd have to think so. SS is more than $1000 a month unless you start taking it really early.

          >You must be at least 65 years old.
Bruh why does every country have a minimum age requirement. I'm in my 30s and I want to retire early and it'd be so much easier with these retirement visas. Why do they only want old people spending money in their country?

because they won't be around for too long, won't cause any trouble, won't have kids, won't work under the table
they are more predictable and safer

Ecuador is extremely slept on. Cheap as hell and not quite a total warzone like some latam states have become. Quito is alright. Guyaquil is kind of a humid hot shithole... Your mom is smart.

The best in the Americas? Most Ecuadorians that can go to US for healthcare, and even to neighboring countries. This is how shitty it is. And super expensive as well.

That's good to hear. Obviously I am worried about her safety, but it's difficult to know what is fear mongering and what is the truth.

There's a good amount of Americans who live in Cuenca. If I couldn't find a nice beach town to settle in then I'd probably pick Cuenca myself.

The beaches in Ecuador are hot and wet year round fyi. The country is literally named after the equator, go figure. There's a reason most of the population lives at altitude. It's a small country but the roads are winding and mountainous so it takes a while to get between cities too otherwise it would be easier to just go to the beach whenever.
