Going for a motorbiking trip to VN was the best decision in my life

This place is amazing. I just started making my way south from Hanoi.

Anyone with experience got any routes to recommend?

Also I have a 110cc, I still have the opportunity to swap it for maybe 150cc.

What are the pros and cons of a bigger bike, my driving experience is limited

Not Vietnam but the Mae Hong Son loop is great

125cc was fine for me, most of it you’re doing 40-70 km/h

I really hope you have insurance. Quite a few people I know or friends of friends have had accidents and needed to ask for donations. Personally I just take the bus or train when in Vietnam. Shit is too risky.

That sounds lame as frick, I rather hang myself than be driven around by a train or a bus.

Opinion disregarded, finding random places is the fun of it. Heres an awesome lake I found. You cant tell the bus "hey, hey stop, ride that way instead I think theres something interesting there.

You are missing the point. I've been to Ninh Binh by tour 5 years ago, had more fun today exploring random lakes and stopping in random towns than organized tours.

Some people prefer being in the middle of the action and having no cares or responsibilities. It feels a lot more escapist for them, especially if they come from a boring suburb in middle America where driving around exploring the countryside is part of their weekend routine.

In Hanoi people treat me like a wallet and molest me to buy shit. As soon as I drove more than 3 houre out of the city everyone smiles at me, is helpful and the food is 3x less expensive.

Pic related was 80,000 VND similar meal in Hanoi would be 200,000. The day I take another fricking bus tour in this country is the one I hung myself. I love exploring, going to Halong by Bus tour is the fakest most artificial Ive had in my life.

Stood in line every 30 minutes so every person on the tour could take their pictures qt the predesignated spot.

I think we just travel for different reasons

        Looks fricking delicious.

Touring Vietnam by motorbike seems a popular thing to do in the country. Are the smaller cities and towns welcoming to foreign travelers? Do you have problems with the language barrier when checking into a hotel, for instance? I've never ridden a motorbike, but I've gotten tired of getting sweaty trudging in the gutter while everyone else is buzzing by, kek.

Started driving south people are already nicer here.

Funny thing is between my post you responded to and my post here. I talked to a local Vietnamese guy from Hanoi, he lived in Saigon for a few years, and he literally said the exact same thing to me without me prompting it.

"People in Hanoi just think about making money and are depressed and gloomy and mean"

This was said by a native Hanoian guy I met who moved to Saigon now moved back for work.

Good shit dude. I've only been to HCMC in Vietnam, but I spent about a month there and it was pretty great. I get the impression it's a little glitzier, rowdier, and more of a global hustler vibe than Hanoi. There were all kinds of fun joints to enjoy and the vibe was consistently great if you enjoy drunk nights on the town

          >it's a little glitzier, rowdier, and more of a global hustler vibe than Hanoi

Hanoi is the scammer hustler city. Also more expensive despite people there being poorer. So saigon is richer more developped and cheaper. And less smog.

The only thing Hanoi has over Saigon is slightly colder and a better party scene for foreigners. Thats it. If you dont care about it being 5-8 degrees hotter and you want to interact with the locals not Backpackers. Go to Saigon.

Idk if you're OP but if you are: that's fricking rich talking about humility. How about keep your experiences for yourself instead of "oh my science I'm going to shitholes in Vietnam while you go to Bangkok lmoa"

That was not me. But I still dont understand the point you are trying to make.

OP here id love to go to Bangkok one day, I would just prefer to enjoy it in my own non touristy way (ohh and no hoes and drugs.)

          >Stood in line every 30 minutes so every person on the tour could take their pictures at the predesignated spot
this board needs trigger warnings lol

Sorry I was just moody the other day, when I posted that. I loved Vietnam when I first came here 5 yrs ago, but I did not enjoy my Halong bay tour, it was so fake, and the people that were on tour with me are the exact people I dont like, and yes there was quite some standing in line so Americans or Brits could take their picture at X or Y spot. If people enjoy that, thats fine. I just dont like my time being wasted, I dont mind taking things slow and at my own pace, but if I want to move on quicken the pace or slow it down, I get really irritated.

Sometimes I want to take time somewhere and sometimes I am disinterested and wish to move forward, hence I get really irritated with tours. Might be my mild autism.

I soent 6 hours today/150km driving to Mai Chau it was gorgeous

Moody bc I couldnt pick up my new Bike (better condition, only driven 2000km prior and it was pretty cheap, handles like a dream).

I feel so much better now that I am out of Hanoi, I cannot take another person shoving a phone of nude pics of girls into my face, or tryinf to sell me weed or coke.

Visit My An district in Da Nang, you'll meet some nice people, also a lot of drunken English teachers smoking bongs at 3pm in pubs 🙂
I'd love to to do a full trip from North to South, it's a great country for moto-trips, only ever did day excursions out of the city. Thing that always amazed me was how you could break down and in a few minutes someone would be offering to help and suddenly you're in neutral while they are pushing you along from their bike to the nearest mechanic 3kms away. Vietnamese people are cool as frick.

There's no space for worrying, only reacting. With a little time you learn to read other riders' intentions, and that builds your confidence. Even as a pedestrian, it's important to be able to predict what motorbike riders are going to do, so you can cross streets safely.

You can also just go to the bus station yourself and hop on one with the rest of the Viets.

I wanted to do a similar thing but didnt have a license or insurance so I ended up hiring a guy in Dalat and we rode on a motorcycle all the way to Hue. It was like 4-5 days and he would constantly stop at cool local spots and he would take me to great restaurants. It would have been cool to drive myself but this was definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

    Just booked my flight.
Never really travelled alone, no idea what to do once I am there. Gonna book a hostel for the first 3 days and then try to make my way outside the city. I have one month.

If anyone is bored or already has a plan/advice, please, feel free.
