Why? Denver is just the place that you go through before you go up into the mountains. It seems like a pretty generic city to me other than “dude, weed”, hipster breweries where everyone brings their dogs and kids for some reason, and people being into outdoors stuff
This, Denver sucks. Pretty soulless architecture and the only nightlife I could find was craft breweries.
This but unironically. People who say “its so close to the mountains” are coping, you are driving 2 hours plus to go anywhere worthwhile. Meanwhile Albuquerque (which also kind of sucks tbh) the mountains are a 20 minute drive

OP should fly to Denver and then see if there are any flights from there into the nearby smaller mountain towns.
