fpbp. You could also extend this to 1854, the end of the isolation period, or 1868 when Japan started being massively influenced by the west which never really stopped

Nah I don't think your meme reply is worthy for a You

Looking back at things Japan was a monster look at the era of the rise of Nintendo it was basically conquering the world on it's whim in tech and influence. You can look at old photos and never see english, no foreigners, just pure proud Japan. Like even the fricking buses now have english on them over Japanese / Kanji. I spent most of the lockdowns studying so now that things finally returned to normal I could visit in preparation to move here but now I'm not so sure. You can see women be a bit plump , which would never happen prior, americans all walking around like they own the place(I kept running into some guy chugging beers and taking pictures at comiket), and loud chinese or koreans. No one respects this country anymore and it pisses me off. Maybe Sapporo is better? I just wish Japan would stop acting like a slave to bend over for american and western culture. What the frick are you on about, 1945 anon was correct. Before the war Japan was isolationist and xenophobic, after the war, they're still xenophobic to a degree, but the post war economic miracle was predicated on close allyship and trade with the US, with that comes American coultural export (like a good chunk of the world, even in socialist eastern Europe where I'm from blue jeans were secretly cool). Not to mention they're a major tourist/international business destination. This image of Japan as this hermit kingdom where people hold wildly different values, dress in kimonos and spit on all things western is peak orientalism.

Also, the Nintendo example is a bit cringe, you should research the places you want to move to more thoroughly next time before blowing cash on a plane ticket

This was a mistake no one on this board is going to take me seriously. Frick it.

Japan was one of if not the only bastion of hope for white males who truly respected culture, a respectable way of life, and wanted to raise a family without fear of divorce or having to guess who is used goods. The world has failed so hard outside what Japan's way of life use to promise for. It's really depressing to think about and realize when you look at the actual shit that the west has become. I wish I was like you all, where arrogance gave pleasure but I can not ignore what I am seeing in Japan. You act like this is okay which is part of the problem. I digress. Maybe I need some time to relax in Hakone without being surrounded by tourists...I just want real Japan with proper values, people who understand you respect their language, culture, art, and values to accept you. Instead I see Burger Kings, McDonalds, and hear rap in places.

Just got back from living in Japan. It's on the verge of collapse. All of my Japanese friend's businesses were failing because of Yen devaluation. prices haven't really risen yet because Japanese budgets are so tight, that any price rise will cause a panic. So retailers are cutting quality and eating the cost.

Japanese society is extremely fragile right now. Foreigners will be the societal scapegoat. This is why you see JP immigration suddenly deporting obnoxious nobody streamers back to America.

The delicate illusion that the Japanese have carefully developed for decades is falling apart. This time they'll have no military to project their frustration through.

It's not the West's fault. We're just selling them what they want.
The Japanese are incredibly prideful and naïve. They have no interest or understanding of what's happening outside of their small island.

It's weird how the American incel/weeaboo wants to defend or shield utopia Japan from the mean outside world. They are very mean to each other, and will carry a grudge against their neighbor for decades until they have the perfect opportunity to frick them over with a smile.

If I were a Japanese, I'd make some Yakuza friends and get ahold of a handgun, because that's where things are going. The Yakuza I've met also tend to be generally kinder and more open people.

The problem is that you're in the major cities and tourist areas.

I felt the same way, most of the really busy parts of Tokyo and Osaka just felt soulless, seeing all the American brands and restaurants made me depressed. Even though I'm a bit of a weeb and I like anime, even Akiba gets overwhelming, you feel like everyone is trying to sell you something

If you go to a residential part of a city or a rural area, that's where I enjoyed myself the most.
Even if there's nothing to do, it just feels comfy walking around, visiting parks etc

American visiting Japan next week, I promise to shit it up and be even more obnoxious than I was originally planning

and no shit I'm going to Hakone so I'll even shit up your precious oasis away from those awful tourists OP

This guy gets it. Culture, urban landscapes, fashion, entertainment, food- how people live- changes constantly. OP's is a hilariously paternalistic take- I trust Japanese youth to preserve the parts of the culture they prefer and otherwise dispense with or change the rest. This guy is is trying to preserve something in amber as his plaything that doesn't want to be preserved.

That's how it always goes down in the long run. Some of their cultural preferences may, shockingly, turn out to be globally influenced. Cultural preferences have always been globally influenced and mass media goes both directions. And sometimes we end up with a healthy competition that yields synthesis (if markets are allowed to work properly).

As I'm sure OP the fricking weeb knows, video games started in the west, growing out of US interactive tech research going on at universities here. Later, Taito and Namco got their starts distributing American games, before starting to develop their own. I'm sure parents in both the US and Japan objected to this new and addicting form of entertainment invading their kids lives, and like OP, wagged their fingers.

OP it's very easy to Google divorce statistics. US is 45% and Japan is 35%. The anti-west take is really stupid and you clearly have an axe to grind. I'd assume a child of a rough divorce.

OP, I just got home from Japan after a 10 day visit and I can't relate to your post at all. I had an amazing time in Japan. I made so many new Japanese friends, got the Instagram handles for a bunch of cute Japanese girls, drank beer with old Japanese surfers until 2am, ate so much delicious food in so many hole-in-the-wall restaurants... I spoke Japanese every day, slept only in capsule hotels, followed my gut, and always said, "yes".
Have you considered that you're a travelcel, and you only go to places that are considered "safe" and "familiar"? How many times did you stray from the crowds and venture off into unknown territory?
Japan won't find you. But you can find Japan, if you try hard enough.

Japanese obsession with America is one of the saddest things in the world to me.
I remember during some election there was live footage of one of the voting locations, showing fat amerimutts wearing stained t-shirts and sweatpants, wobbling around to get to voting machines.
And the Japanese, ever sharply dressed and orderly, attentively reporting on it all. The contrast is just absurd, as it the fact that the most intelligent people in the world would care so much about the doings of some obese morons.

This must be what it feels like when your son is some wunderkind who can effortlessly play the violin, only for him to discover hiphop and now he wants to "sling dope and frick hoes" and you're pretty sure he's been smoking weed.

No, domestic music in Japan still has stronger sales than international music. For example, you can have rappers like Lil Pump visit in Japan yet nobody recognizes him on the street because the average Japanese citizen does not care about American rappers.

    >Akihabara
Oh I found your problem. Explore outside even a little, like walk about 5 or 10 minutes outside the main strip and you'll see the English signs immediately dissappear. That place is tourist central, I was very shocked by that when I visited there. I walked outside of the main strip lookig for food and immediately ran into offices and living areas without any to little English signs. And there were porn shops there, but you had to look for them. I saw a few on my time there (even walked into one accidentally). That was 2021 so maybe its different now from the pandemic.
Also you hear English and Chinese and Korean (I think) in the train stations because that is like hearing English and Spanish in America. Those are some of the more commonly spoken languages there besides Japanese, and if you live in Japan you most likely won't ever be listening to the instructions just watching the signs, etc.

I kinda of don't know what to feel about this thread.
I myself landed in Japan a week ago and am depressed as shit
    >akihabara is like 60/40 foreigners to locals
    >most of the legendary doujinshi shops closed and you have to basically herd in like cattle to goyslop levels of doujins
    >soapshops that you hope for are all gone at this point stuck up with enough foreigners they actively shoo you away(it happened to me even though I was going to pay nearly 20,000 yen over asking price)
    >Black folk and JEETS are everywhere I can't go back to shinjuku which I hoped to have some cool fun seeing slick yakuza standing around, no just Black folk
    >They speak English or bring English menu to you simply because they think you are American (north London and the good part of it)
    >Trains are separated now meaning no possible QT's shoving against you
    >foreigners are loud and give a bad impression to you
    >doujinshi reading in public is now looked down on and can't be bought at 711 like the good days(no not all of it is porn to rub a quicky on)

I agree Americans are the worst part of Japan and have really raped it into the ground similar to what is happening back home to my city. I wanted to teach English here, settle down, and live a happy peaceful life... Now I am not sure, maybe Norway has better trad wives.

When I walk around Shibuya and Shinjuku I see almost zero foreigners, not including the blacks that come out to hustle at night.

The American cargo culting characterised Japan in the 80s and 90s just as much as today.
But obviously, seeing it today is more worrying since now US culture is a black anal cavity of 'culture'.

    >people consistently speak english to me without realizing I speak Japanese(simply because I am white)
People kept speaking Japanese to me even though I don't speak two words of it, I bet you're dressed like an American tourist.

    >There is western music playing in the Lawsons I visit for lunch
Why are you eating lunch at lawson instead of local restaurants/ramen places?
Tokyo has Michelin starred ramen and the most Michelin starred/Bib Gourmand restaurants of any cities if you're too afraid to find places yourself.
And if it's late at night there's always sukiyaki and the likes.

    >What annoys me the most is that there are practically 0 doujinshi shops in Akihabara now, you have like 2 or 3 good ones that are willing to sell the good stuff. Comiket was a relief but running into the amount of foreigners there was embarrassing.
Stop pretending you're not a stupid foreigner as well, we all are get over it.
Also Comiket and doujins are lame, you're in a country where you can easily make 7/10 and above Japanese cuties eat your shit for some ¥ and you just jack off to cartoons?

Best vacations of my life personally, maybe stop being poor/lame. Is it your first time out of the US?

Japan is just another consoomer tourist trap country. The boomers had Italy and France, now Zoomies have Japan and Korea.
