Nobody really knows. The most popular theory is that DHT weak haircells are strangled to death by DHT. On the other hand, beards love DHT. So if you are bald and don't have a good beard it is likely a israeli curse.
Nope, it's DHT. Some hair follicles (unfortunately to us, mostly the ones on the scalp) are sensitive to DHT. This varies from person to person. Some lucky guys have exclusively DHT resistant hair follicles up top. Some have a mix and their hairline receds. Some have their entire scalp covered by DHT sensitive follicles and they go coast to coast shiny ass bald.
What's confusing is that DHT is a byproduct of testosterone, so for a given person if you raise his T levels, his DHT levels will also rise, and if he is susceptible to balding, he will bald faster.
DHT promotes growth of body hair (including beard), and at the same time kills hair follicles that are sensitive to it. Very rarely, some balding men experience "receding" body hair as well. DHT is one hell of a drug.
It's worth noting that DHT gives us more strength than Testosterone. DHT is also responsible for our willpower - makes you calm yet determined and full of energy.
