I just went to an honorary consulate and filled out some paper work to get my German passport. It took 4 months or so for it to arrive.

If you're looking to get an Italian passport I read somewhere that it's better to do it here if you can.
Embassies are backed up and slow but if you actually go to your ancestors comune and get their birth certificates yourself you can do the bureaucratic part here where it's faster
