The country still has a long way to go. I personally wasn't blown away but much of anything it had to offer other than the food. It's also not as cheap as it's neighbors like Guatemala/Honduras. If you're going to stay in San Salvador I advise you to stay around Zona Rosa or around Metrocentro. "Surf City" was just ok. If you're going to have access to a car I recommend doing the Santa Ana volcano climb and then coming down to Lago de Coatepeque after you're done to chill out.

Honestly most of the allure is that it cleaned up so much in a short amount of time. Honduras seems a little to dodgy though maybe Im just a homosexual. Panama and the DR are also on my radar for shorter trips. Worst case I can just go back to Mexico.

Ever been to Antigua Guatemala? I'd recommend that over El Salvador. Honduras is a little dodgy but I haven't had a problem there (yet). Panama is also a good idea for a short trip. You can do the Miraflores Visitor Center (panama canal) for like half a day, then kill some more time in the old city. Good for a longer weekend trip.

I did Antigua. Super nice even boomer friendly. Was thinking of doing one or two trips this year. A few days in one of the capitals I mentioned followed by a little over a week on the beach.

kinda like says...its not amazing. i dint like san salvador that much, it was meh. the coast was ok, but there's better. In land I liked a lot, the mountains/volcanos and the towns inland are the highlight but tbh even then I was left...uninspired.
the people were generally nice, the food was typical central american fayre and other than that there's not a lot to do, the girls arent really pretty or loose like other destinations.
It's worth seeing but i wouldnt put a lot of time here, I prefered Guatamala - i found the people more sociable and fun.
      have fun if you go

I thought the CIA were bad guys? Why are they propping up a guy who is massively improving the lives of Salvadorians?

        Anonymous

He isn't improving shit. It's the same bullshit, more expensive, more of a nanny state, harder to get around. Nobody can say anything against him because he is literally the idiots' dictator. Everyone comments how shit is not right, but feel like they personally owe him a debt for the gang bullshit.

Funny how he got something like 86% of the vote last election, though.

How do you think things are going to go from here? Are term-limits a thing in El Salvador? Get the feeling this guy is going to go full totalitarian like Castro. I've never been to Central America but I'm sure it's a rough place. Best of luck with the situation. I hope you can find a way to have a peaceful country without an authoritarian head-of-state.

He got a court ruling to allow him to ignore the constitutional provision against consecutive terms in office. TBQPH he did such a great job in his first term that it's probably not a bad thing. But the opposition parties are all screaming about dictatorships (even though they were in bed with the gangs that were extorting the populace, you know, just like dictatorships do).

Stop the reddit tier FUD. You sound like one of those b***hes scared to walk outside because they might get raped. El Salvador had 0 rabies deaths in the last few years.

Nothing wrong with getting pre-exposure rabies vaccine. I got attacked by a bat about ten years ago and it cost me several thousand dollars even though I was in a low-cost country. Rabies immunoglobulin alone was over $3000. It's fricking expensive no matter what you do.

If you're already vaccinated pre-exposure, you don't need the immunoglobulin. The vaccines are only $60 per unit (three for pre-exposure).

    Salvadoran here.
It's still a shithole. It's more expensive now.

Gangs were never a problem, only gang-related people died from gang crime. Only gang shitholes were being guarded by gang members.

This stupid arab Black person started a cult of personality around himself and blares propaganda all the time. Changes things for the sake of changing them. If you were looking for a rustic vibe visiting natural places like San Salvador's volcano, Devil's gate outlook, forget it. You get the sanitized concrete slab bullshit you see in tourist traps anywhere around the world.

The beaches are shit, they are still full of smelly fat poor people. Public transportation went to shit so now you must pay uber to get around. The city is still the same utilitarian city with nothing to do.

Hate whenever someone thinks of El Salvador, it immediately comes to mind this pubehead frickface.

Also, this is a shit time to visit, the point of coming here is to visit volcanoes and look as far as you can see. It's hazy the whole season, you can only see far right after it has rained (may-july) or when northern winds are strong (november-january). I recommend november-december to see fields full of daisies. Also the pink flowered Maquilishuat trees bloom the 10th week of the year and the yellow flowered Cortez Blanco about 2 or 4 weeks after (they just stopped blooming a week ago). During the last weeks of May you can see the red flowered "Firetree".

Love this country, hate the people.

Things will get more expensive, everything went up 30% in 2 years. Things will get more tourist trappy. One of the things I loved from here was, if you weren't a moron, you could drive however you damn please. Now there are chink traffic cameras and automated ticketing, so you have to drive unreasonably slow at curves and empty roads, can't reverse if you happened to block an intersection or pedestrian walk, since you're already fricked. Some people have posted on twitter drivers minding their business in their car like reading something in heavy traffic and they have been hunted, fined and public humiliated by cops.

It's unconstitutional to serve more than one continuous term, guess what this frick did. He said "I'm going on vacation therefore my term isn't continuous" and reelected himself. There used to be 256 townships, some of them ideologically strong rural left wing, he mandated to fuse 5 of them each to gerrymander them into drowning the former guerrilla party and disband it.

All national symbols have been rebranded, all township flags have been rebranded. He won't pull a Castro, but might as well call him right wing Maduro.

Nobody uses it. I don't know how the government uses it, it has not been advertised ever since its implementation. Some people play with it but nobody uses it as currency.

Main reason I opened this thread. How can I, a Bitcoin-rich individual, cash out to fund my vacation? Do the banks take it like at a currency exchange? Are there Bitcoin teller machines where I can transfer some of my Bitcoin and get cash out so I can pay at places that only take paper money?

I genuinely don't understand the massive moronation from gringos.
Isn't tourism a source of wealth for a nation?
Then why are these morons rejecting visas applications like there's no tomorrow?
Motherfrickers complain that they are starving yet they don't want tourists' cash.
I am not pro illegals morons but their visa system shouldn't be run by literal dorks.

It's like this because 7/10 thirdies that claim to want to "visit" the US actually want to stay and work there. And no, tourism from Guatemala and Cambodia doesn't significantly contribute to the US economy. The richgays have no problem getting a visa and non-shithole countries like Norway have the visa waiver. Sure a few honest but poor Salvadorians get filtered from entering the US but nobody cares.

Funny you say this shit since nowadays the US is faring economical problems and is not far away from becoming another turd world country.
Only starving homeless people would go and stay there, and even then, dude the application costs 300 bucks.
Do you honestly think a starving spicshit will even apply for it?
        >And no, tourism from Guatemala and Cambodia
Ironically, european gays are traveling anywhere else but America.
If America is not getting either their money or spics', and it is self succient and smug, then why the frick do they complain that they have no money and shit?
        >The richgays
They aren't traveling to American shithole, they have their private pedo island

No. It's not. The wealth of a nation is the distribution of resources among its people, taking some, leaving some.

Tourism is whoring out your resources to other people without sharing shit because your country produces nothing valuable in the first place. The money of tourism business owners doesn't reach me because they go spend it in the US or Europe, while I get to pay higher because now i'm part of the higher demand market.

Imagine if you started whoring your wife, so when you want to frick her she won't put out until you pay her as well. This is the reason the US is shithead expensive. I dont want that to happen to El Salvador, I've even considered moving to Costa Rica for that.
