The subway does not exist outside of NYC, if you do this you'll be trying to take NJ transit which has a far lower on-time service rate than either MetroNorth (Westchester County) or the LIRR (Long Island). I recommend you stay at a hotel in White Plains, NY and take an express train to Grand Central every morning, it'll get you there much faster than NJT.

Rent for the shittiest place in the city wouldn't be lower than $2000 a month, so i don't think anywhere would have a private room for less than $150-$200 per night. I think that is because in the South and Midwest -- the flyover states a big hobby is barbecuing. In the South I hear they fry almost everything they eat as well.
