Im Egyptian anon, I can help if you need. You dont really have to know anything special, just learn how to bargain and haggle. Also if you’re a woman you will probably feel uncomfortable, the local men here are pretty rude and often harass foreign women.
Im a guy though i will be with a female relative -- we were each going separately, but i got bullied into it since its probably best she doesn't go alone.
Give me unusual, off the beaten path, places to visit, particularly in Cairo.
And just good books in general. Im quite excited to see it all but i shamefully know very little.
Damn what is it with these girls and their desire to wander the middle east and north africa alone. Like moths to a flame...
As for books, Watari's The Egyptian is massive KINO. But probably not what you're looking for. For travel books I always check the catalogue of Eland Books, they have one I haven't read called The Pharaoh's Shadow: Travels in Ancient and Modern Egypt, might be worth a look.
Don't let the girl out of your sight, ever, she's 100% certain to be harassed (and possibly even worse). In fact, she's very likely to be harassed in your presence as well. Why anyone would go to Egypt in 2022 is beyond me, such a disgusting, vile place. Show her link related.

But i would like to know some lit places, maybe authors homes or out of the way museums

go to the Coptic quarter in Cairo. A lot of cool ancient churches there. All the Copts I know are really decent people.
