Is Bali that Bad?

Looking for a place to chill and surf. Heard bad things about the tourists there. How do they compare to Thailand?

The north coast of Bali is pretty chill. Not sure if you can surf there though, most northern tourist towns are focused on diving. Stay the frick away from Kuta and Ubud and you'll be able to leave Bali with your image of it more or less intact.
I bet there are a lot of hidden gem surf destinations in Indonesia; Bali is only one of 16k islands after all.

It's good, actually. Just stay away from Kuta and adjacent areas. Try Uluwatu or go off the beaten path and head out east.

YES!!! Bali is that fricking bad, stop fricking going there, I don't know why Australians love expensive shit booze and monkey(animal and man) stealing shit from you just for beaches that are shitter than those at home, least of all getting one in the back of the head for drug smuggling which you'd think would be a pretty good deterrent, but I guess not!

OP here. Considering Bali in 2 months during the wet season. I like rain and am a beginner surfer. Anyone ever surf around the east of the island?? Seems like a no-brainer taking advantage of the infrastructure with no crowds for cheap.

Can't give you any advice about surfing, but regarding rain, I was there in February and it was fine. You may get an afternoon downpour - it's too heavy to go outside so either crack a beer on a balcony or have a nap or something.

Oh, and I also wouldn't say "no crowds". Again, maybe it's less crowded for surfing but the beach I was going to (which did have surfers) was packed with people.

Indonesia is big, why don't you go to Lombok or Flores if you don't want tourists. Bali was my least favorite part of Indonesia.

Ubud is fine. Yeah, there are tourists, but it's not an obnoxious party town and it's not like you have to share a beach. Find a nice hotel (you can get great bang for your buck) and enjoy the weather, hospitality and local food very cheaply. There's plenty to see in the area and taxis abound for easy access.

If you have a scooter and stay a bit outside of town it's not bad, inside town had some of the worst traffic on the island. I think the chill surf beaches are supposed to be down south around Uluwatu and that area. Sanur is also fairly calm, but I don't know how the surf is on that side.
