The infrastructure that makes it possible has been decaying for decades now, "van life" is a bourgeois conspicuous consumption activity because the only way to realistically do it is with bucketloads of money

If you could just stay a bit longer it would be financially sound

Yes, car camping is very much doable in America, but it is no vanlife paradise unless you have a tricked-out Sprinter van with all the amenities and a pretty girlfriend who puts out every night.

Absolute bullshit. I bet you've never slept on top of four wheels in your entire life, whereas I have done so for 1000+ nights without spending a fricking dime on camping fees.

unless you plan on camping out in some national park for weeks at a time it seems stupid as frick

National parks require both an entrance fee and a camping fee. Boondockers stay on National Forest land, Bureau of Land Management land, and sometimes state land.

What if the israeli cops come after you

Very rarely happens, unless you park on the side of a road where cops patrol, or within view of somebody in their home who gets paranoid and calls the cops. I've been run off by police a total of two times in the entirety of my van travels. The majority of police interactions have been amiable, although being woken up at 3 AM by red-and-blues is never fun. Pick your campsite wisely, before it gets dark. Sometimes light discipline is needed if you want to stay unnoticed.

Of course you will feel ostracized from mainstream society as a car camper, but if you keep your setup low-key, you won't have to deal with hostile reactions from passersby. Don't use window covers, they scream "I am a homeless bum". Finding overnight parking is always a hassle, but that's what you have wheels for. Sometimes you just have to be adventurous...hit the road before sunset and find a spot where you can get away with staying the night. Nobody can see you in the dark, and you head out with the break of dawn.
        >vehicles are expensive to run
No they aren't, if you have a reliable vehicle. Gas, oil, brakes, tires - that's about it. I pay $50/month for insurance & registration in Colorado.

Have either of you seen Two-Lane Blacktop? The sort of nomadic lifestyle depicted there is increasingly unattainable.
Cars are more expensive, spare parts/fixing is more expensive especially if you have no mechanical expertise, highways built in the 40s and 50 are poorly maintained and crumbling, towns and cities are also crumbling + dangerous (you risk getting your vehicle damaged/stolen), gas is a lot more expensive, you can't take on odd jobs to sustain the lifestyle unless you're wfh and you're less likely to get help from strangers if you get stranded in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire.
That's the decaying physical and social infrastructure I'm talking about

Cars are actually much more reliable than they were in the 50s, travel times between different parts of the country are much shorter, roads are in better shape, cars are more comfortable and easier to drive, gas is about the same, adjusted for inflation (except California). The current generation is just much bigger pussies.

      >find flat area
      >set tent
      >make controlled fire
      >sleep
WTF you morons on about? Just do backwood camping, it's actual camping and going to a site is just government aproved camping, it's gay.

The infrastructure that makes it possible has been decaying for decades now, "van life" is a bourgeois conspicuous consumption activity because the only way to realistically do it is with bucketloads of money

have been trolling SighSee van threads for like 5-6 years now by claiming that you need $25k to buy a van and to be pulling in $5k/mo from a digital nomad gig or rich parent's gibs.
morons dont realise that its usually done by poorgays in a $2k vehicle to save money on rent/hostels in a time where a hostel bed starts at $70/night and rent in most towns is $350/week for half of someone's living room.

Vehicles are expensive to run and round here at least the “travelling community” is undesirable, so it’s a crime to park up anywhere interesting

What do you think car camping is? I did it all the time when I was younger. It's exactly what it seems like. You drive to a rural area. You park a car. You do stuff.

Yes, for a week, maybe 1 weeks max. I do it a good amount when i go on road trips visiting cycling and mountain bike destinations. I have an apartment to go home to eventually though, living in your car permanently would be terrible
