Lifelong resident of western PA here. It is very beautiful in most of the state. Pretty much all of the state is mountainous or rolling foothills. There is no shortage of forested areas. The Allegheny national forest is one of my favorite places ever and has so much hiking and camping opportunities.

Rural PA is surprisingly gorgeous. Really nice small towns. I can see why all the Amish moved there. Old school Americana vibe with tons of history too, Gettysburg and other civil war shit is there

I would suggest Russia is Alaska for two main reasons—for one, Alaska is very nearly contiguous with Far Eastern Russia. So there is a substantial portion of the terrains of each territory that is literally the same thing. It’s true also, of course, that Finland is literally contiguous with Russia and a chunk of Russian Karelia is historically and ethnically Finnish. But the second salient point would be that Finland hasn’t got any mountains (also a disqualifier for resembling VT IMO), while Russia and Alaska have some big ones.
Finland is more like Minnesota than it is like either VT or AK from my perspective, in that it’s flat and full of lakes. But perhaps the flora isn’t a good match.

I don’t know many Alaskans, and the few I do know are probably not representative. One’s an Alaska Native (Tlingit) and a chef, a very nice guy, soft-spoken but actually very outgoing; his wife is a bit of a nerd, perhaps slightly high-strung… but they’re both from Anchorage and are sort of urbane in their tastes, so presumably quite unlike people going out of their way to be isolated in the frozen bush. I know a slightly larger sample of Finns and apart from most of my Finnish friends being rather soft-spoken don’t feel like they’re very similar. But maybe all the Finns I know are atypical, too. Probably worth noting that the Finns I know, apart from one, don’t actually choose to live in Finland.
So I guess I’ll take your word for it even if I don’t see it myself.

Parts of PA are pretty, absolutely. But is Germany really especially beautiful to you? Apart from one pretty large (for Europe) forest and some mountains it seems like a pretty generic Central Euro landscape for the most part… not better-looking than neighboring countries in any way I can think of. There’s more forest cover even just in France, and more dramatic mountain and river valley landscapes in either Italy or Switzerland IMO.

I don’t know what an /in/cel is—someone who is not an outdoorsman? I’ll cop to that without shame. And I admit that I don’t know Alaska. I visited friends in Anchorage once, and that’s it. But I know Russia and Finland moderately well, particularly where they meet; I spent a full six weeks based in Petrozavodsk, capital of Russian Karelia, and I’ve been to a bunch of towns and cities in both countries. Not too much time in the backwoods in either except for some short fishing trips (as I think you suggested earlier, I’m not particularly outdoorsy), but I’ve been through diverse parts of both.

Based on photos I’ve seen of Alaska and visits to Siberia, this isn’t surprising. It makes basic geological and geographic sense.

OK. As I said, I don’t really know Alaska at all. But there are a lot of coastal regions in Russia that look like Norway and Finland, too, albeit with a much more primitive approach to industrialization and a lot more poverty. Arkhangelsk and the White Sea coast look totally Nordic in terms of geography and climate, if not architecture, wealth, or industrial modernity.
Anyway, I wasn’t personally trying to argue in favor of Russia being more like Alaska than it is like any other country, I was just explaining why I thought these poll respondents might think so. I don’t care. This whole thread is sort of silly.

So I grew up in PA and have been to Germany I think I’m qualified to answer. PA has some pretty spots in rural areas and places with lots of trees in a sort of sleepy quaint but not majestic way. PA also has some of the ugliest environments on earth, it is home of the Breezewood PA meme and contrary to what seething America loving homosexuals with fat wives on this board will say, that is an accurate depiction of what it looks like and what a lot of it looks like. Most people live in meme tier souless McMansions near soulless strip malls, but there are pretty older neighborhoods in places and some decent old architecture in some of the cities, though they have lots of junky zombies (Philly specifically) and old crumbling industrial shit that looks like it’s out of a Fallout game surrounding them. Fallout even had a DLC set in Pittsburgh. The most common weather is for the sky to be grey and there to be this gross mist that isn’t quite rain. It’s usually just cold enough you need to wear a coat, but just hot enough that you will sweat under it. As for the comparison to Germany, I would say Germany mogs PA in basically every way, there is nothing in America that even comes close to what Germany is. This is true of Europe vs. America in general. Europe is basically better and mogs America in every way, the only exception would be probably places like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, etc.

the bad industrial parts you are describing make up like .5% of PA by area.
Pennsylvania has quite a lot of rundown post-industrial towns. In fact, this is how you’d define some of the state’s biggest settlements. There are agricultural communities particularly in the Southeast and Central parts of the state, but the rest of it sprouted up from industrialization and never had agricultural roots. These cities and towns came out of the coal and steel industries, then survived on manufacturing and logistics. Once all that went away, these cities had nothing and still had nothing. The fracking boom did very little for any one place besides maybe Pittsburgh. So Pennsylvania has a lot of these places. In fact, almost every city in the state can be characterized that way.

90% of the state by area is forest or mountains. or farmland. yes there are run down areas but people make it sound like its the whole state. i dont know why the frick they do this, to seem cool? it's weird. Not all cities are like that. Hermitage, PA for instance is very nice because the people in charge of it in the 80s and 90s weren't fricktards that let things decline and now it is a somewhat wealthy area that looks as nice as cities anywhere in the US.
What people are going out of their way to overemphasize are PARTS of some cities.

What's really weird with them, as when I lived there, everyone was content with the mediocrity and decay. It's quite depressing because there is a lot of industrial decay and the lack of sunshine.
