Is Tijuana safe even for half a day? Going to San Diego and was thinking of just walking over the border then back before it gets dark. Good idea or bad? I'd be alone
Yes, you'll be fine as long as you stick around Avenida Revolucion. I went as far west as Friendship Park just to see where the border wall ended and had zero problems. Only annoyance was waiting for a cab ride back to downtown TJ.
I haven't been to Tijuana since 2017; it's one of the few Mexican border cities I have never revisited after the first time, though I found it the most lively and exciting of all the border cities.
Tijuana is not safe, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't visit. Do not engage with the Mexican deportees and other street lowlifes who speak good English and may try to befriend you. They are scum. With the current influx of migrants, expect to see lots of non-Mexicans around, perhaps even tent cities in parks and the like. The migrants are usually quite passive and don't harass visitors.
If you want to coom, there are hotels everywhere which offer cheap rooms for 2 hours.
I went to Tijuana with my church group. The worst thing that happened was that one of my friends paid $80 for a "silver" necklace that turned green when he sweated all over it.
Tijuana's problems are real but exaggerated. It's safe to visit Tijuana. Just stick to main streets, avoid alleys and desolate poorly lit areas, don't go with someone who wants to take you somewhere. Agree on a price for where you're going before getting into a cab. Avoid zona norte outside of the brothel streets. The walk to there is fine but kinda shitty, takes you past a lot of touts and lowlifes who are drunk and pissing on the sidewalk or on drugs begging. Just walk like you know where you're going and don't have time to talk to anyone. TJ is worth visiting just act like you're visiting that desert planet in Star Wars.
I would recommend you take taxis directly to whatever destination you are interested in going to, don't try and walk everywhere. it's not fun. there's no sidewalk or pedestrian infrastructure in most of the city

Yeah planned on just going to downtown and red light district

Hows the walk from the border to Zona Norte?

Between the border Revolucion/Coahuila there is and a footbridge across the river. It's still kind of shit though.
trying to walk through tijuana is one of the worst tourist experiences i have ever had.
btw OP bring cash with you. be street smart, nobody will try and steal from you (at least in my experience)
>I would recommend you take taxis directly
aren't getting in Taxis a bad idea?
