You are now aware all economy are fairly similar, with some general and well-known trends like LCCs making it as shit as possible, Air India being the most disgusting and foul smelling because of the type of passengers they have (streetshitters), Japan Airlines having class-leading space in economy such that my 6 ft boss can sit in it comfortably, etc. Other than that there is really very little that differentiates economy, and class of service (prem econ, business, etc.) or equipment used (narrow body, widebody, regional jet) makes far more of a difference regardless of class
JAL is better on certain aircraft in economy and premium economy, some of their Boeing 787's only have 8 economy seats in a row, rather than the usual 9. So check what plane you'd likely be on and have a look at some seat plans.
Both airlines are excellent though, and way above most other carriers, especially in lower classes. Middle Eastern airlines are nice in premium classes, but it can be an uncultured zoo in economy due to having to fly via their Middle Eastern hub.
Other decisions are just down to preference (alirline alliances, flight times and which Tokyo airport the flights use).
>TOKYO, Japan ― Japan Airlines (JAL), a member of the oneworld® alliance, today announced that it has been awarded the prestigious title of “World's Best Economy Class” and the “World's Best Economy Class Seat” at the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards Ceremony held in Paris, France.21 Jun 2023 >https://press.jal.co.jp/en/release/202306/007460.html#:~:text=TOKYO%2C%20Japan%20%E2%80%95%20Japan%20Airlines%20(,Ceremony%20held%20in%20Paris%2C%20France.
Seems like a very good choice for economy, honestly. Their tickets are a bit pricey though.
I usually give gifts like chocolates to cabin crew since I also work in the airline industry. Even if I don't expect anything in return, it pays to be generous sometimes.
I only flew with JAL once and when I gave them chocolates, they actually gave me a mini-model of their 777-300 as well as some branded stuff. It was quite surreal & never expected something like that
Great airline, but their route sucks compared to my home port's airline. Wish I could fly with them again someday.

JAL is a thoroughly average airline.
On what planet?
There is nothing excellent about JAL. Everything about it is pretty average. Nothing is bad, but nothing is great either.

Every airline gets these kinds of awards every year, just FYI.

Isn't ANA much better for nonrevs?
Haven't used neither because I always fly on own own metal if possible.
Have flown Jal Premium Economy and business, decent enough, great service, food ok but not as good as Qatar which is gold standard for me.
How is the onboard cooming like?
