Film has visual aesthetics and acting as part of the whole artistry. Its not about the story. There are numerous mafia films from those decades with probably slightly better stories (same themes) that were cheaply filmed and no vision. The themes of Godfather don't matter much when they are enchanted by the music and camera work.

Most contemporary films, even critically acclaimed ones, are horrible. Because the medium cares more about disingenuously establishing pathos through narrative heft instead of showcasing visual sleight-of-hand, they essentially revert back to the models of adaptation and franchising. No one can actually say why Godfather is a good film beyond the story's individual beats, meanwhile it is clear from an objective standpoint what makes North By Northwest, Good Bad and Ugly and Citizen Kane great films since they are like this anon say emphasizing sight over story. This is also why it's stupid to say Coppola is better than Scorsese, because both were hacks who didn't know anything about film but wanted to reinvent its artistry anyways.

Dangerously based. I'm sick of seeing A24 garbage getting constantly praised and awarded. Filmbros are incredibly obnoxious.

A24's new muscle mommy movie had a magical realism bit at the end where the muscle chick becomes a giantess and holds a character down
I wish I was kidding. it felt like it was filmed for fetishists to jerk it to

Of course it had that. A24 know their target audience well at this point; horny and easily impressed losers who haven't seen a good movie in their lives.

There's too many shit movies that lower the medium. Pulp Fiction is moronic. Even Citizen Kane. Dumb fricking movie that isn't the best movie ever. I like films, but most are fricking garbage.

What are you talking about, Hitchwiener’s films were exquisitely plotted and characters were very psychoanalytically fleshed out, not to mention other things.
Hitchwiener’s movies are not sight works, they are perfectly constructed gems in every measure and aspect, including plot.

Many of my favorite movies don’t have some grand plot but the individual scenes and characters make me love it. Sometimes I don’t even know what’s going on. Godfather was good, Lost in Translation, Amelie, Love Liza. With literature that strategy is tricky because I really need to enjoy the prose and have a vivid idea in my head that makes it feel like a movie, if there isn’t much drama that I’m invested in.

The theme matters insofar as theme means vibes. Vibes are what makes great cinema, and is established by techniques quite different from those employed in literature (including the traditional drama)

Vibes are a meme. You want comforting and familiar aesthetics regardless of how cheaply they're put together.

The fact that they took the smut out is critical. The main appeal of The Godfather is the family values it extols. A reactionary way of interacting with the modern economy in which the main principle is extreme solidarity within the family unit

Murder is much more vivid of screen. Not so much in books. Cinema is inherently pornographic so killings are the perfect fit.

The cast is outstanding (Kubrick said it is the best cast film ever made) and pump flat pulp characters into into interesting characters. The music is outstanding and unforgettable and perfectly mixes soft melancholy and nostalgia with the violence, accenting to the tragic loss of what matters most (family) ostensibly to originally preserve and strengthen it. Also the directing makes the visuals iconic.

After I watched the Godfather for the first time and how great the casting was and just the nice slow flow it made me never want to watch modern movies again. I immediately went down a Jane Fonda binge from like the 60s or whatever era it was and she’s so freaking hot. I also stopped reading modern books too. Everything since the 70s is just depressing and hits too close to home. I am old, ready to die.

I say this as someone with not 100% Irish ancestry, but they're just annoying. Every movie is the Mafia. I'm biased in favor of the Irish. Boston has annoying Irish people, but there's not that many movies made about Irish people, Irish immigrants.

They think they're hot shit for being Italian American. I hate New Jersey and New York City. Irish Americans who lean into it are only annoying to the Irish and people outside the US. Italian Americans are annoying inside the US. It might be a Mediterranean thing. Northern versus Southern Europe. I like Pizza, but frick every loud Italian American New Yorker who brags about living there. Everyone from New York is an annoying homosexual immigrant. They have that gay immigrant/New York mindset. I prefer Irish, English, Scottish, Dutch, German, and Scandinavian Americans because they're not annoying as frick.

I heard the finale is beloved but isn't it kind of silly that Sonny was a reckless idiot that got himself killed for waging war with the same people that Michael killed instantly? They had the same uncompromising approach but Michael was the genius because he thought of just assassinating their leaders all at once to no blowback?

The Corleones were hiding their strength and feigning weakness (remember in the movie when Tessio and Clemenza are complaining to Vito and ask to break away and form their own families). Vito was known for his word and he made a swear that he would not be the one to break the peace after Sonny's death, so the other families were comfortable and figured they were safe, so they stopped hitting the mattresses and were going out and about. The other families underestimated Michael too, even people in his own family did so. The amount of detail and worldbuilding that went into the Godfather is a big part of its success.

        Anonymous

I didn't understand this part. Why would the two main capos form their own families? What would the Corleones gain from breaking apart?

          Anonymous

The two capos were already somewhat independent and people even thought Tessio ran his own family because of the independence but they still had to give some profits up to Corleone, as well as take orders. Having their own families would mean they can take more of the money. They were already 1940s millionaires because of Vito.

Completely agree, it's actually boring because it's like reading a "novelization" of the film.
To be entirely fair, Puzo wrote this specifically to sell to the studio, because he needed money to pay his gambling debts. In that sense, it is almost poetic.
