    Ameirtard here,

If you're not a complete moron, Brazil is fine. Lapa is a drunken, drug ridden sithole, so just stay in Zona Sul (Ipanema, Leblon, Leme) or Barra de Tijuca and you'll be fine. As long as you take the normal precautions like not wearing flashy clothes, flashing cash in public, have someone watch your stuff if you go in the ocean, and stear clear of obviously sketchy neighborhoods, you should have zero issues.

All that being said, don't go to Brazil, especially for a honeymoon. When Patrice O'Neal said "they sell you dreams in Brazil", he wasn't lying and that doesn't just apply to prozzies. If you go to Brazil, you're only going to question the decisions you've made.

      Burgerbro is 100% right.

      Rio anon here.
There are way better places for honeymoon than Rio, the city may just worth visiting if you're into nature, hiking, climbing or just want to coom for a fair price, otherwise there is not much to do.

    >is it a shit hole?
I was surprised by how much it wasn't a shit hole after everything I've heard, I never felt in much danger in the tourist areas, Colombia was 10x worse

    >Barra de Tijuca
I stayed here and it's great and chill, can walk around 24/7 without problems, the beach is nice, and if you want to go to the city just take the metro or uber, downside is it can be a bit boring I guess, but it's fine for a week or so.

    >Zona Sul
Walked around here day and night, only Copacabana felt a bit sketch in some areas at night, everywhere else seemed fine

    >Downtown/Centro
Mostly fine in the day in the historic areas but can be a bit chaotic like many big cities, some homeless and probably pickpockets, just make sure you know where you're going to avoid trouble and get an uber if you aren't sure about walking.

Not him but I read another thread about Colombia a couple weeks ago mentioning a huge spike in crime over there

    Swedish here.
Brazil is less shithole than most of Latin America. What is considered a favela in brazil is a middle low class neighborhood in Mexico.

Got diarrhea and robbed in Mexico. Pretty low cleanness standards. It was only safe in touristy areas like Cancun and some parts of Mexico city.

If you stick to the right places brazil it is totally ok.

Yeah we’re also thinking Cancun. Is it worth it? We’re bongs so it’s a pretty long flight and I wanna see chichi niza or whatever it’s called

Pass on chichen Itza unless you are checking off "wonders of the world" -- tulum has better ruins and not as many hawkers

You made mistakes in Mexico that you did not make in Brazil, therefore Mexico is a shithole and Brazil is a great place. kek

I have friends that say the same. Mexico became a violent hellhole.
Also, be careful where you eat, of you will fell Montezuma's revenge. My friend got seriously sick there.

I would rather go to South America, but is much more common for Americans to go to Mexico since is so close.

As long as you stay in your tourist containment area (zona sul) then you’ll be fine. That includes Leblon and Ipanema. Copacabana if you’re on a budget. Please come here and spend lots of money!

Not a good honeymoon destination imo. But is right. You'll be fine if you are not stupid. And it is a nice city to spend 5 days. But if you really want to go there in your honeymoon I suggest (if you have enough time) to go to Angra as well. Get a nice hotel or a villa in a condominio (gated community) and charter a boat to island hop.

    riotur.rio

go to riotur.rio . in rio there are places that are worth it, but are not famous: Botanical Garden in Jardim Botânico, Basilica da Penha in Penha, the commerc in Saarah Shopping, Madureira Park in Madureira. but if you're not adventurous, stay only in: Recreio, Barra da Tijuca, Gávea, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, Lagoa, Jardim Botânico, São Cristóvão, Flamengo, Tijuca, Maracanã and Urca. But if yoi is an adventurous go to: Rocinha.

I stayed in brazil for a month and only got home like 4 days ago. As long as you can speak portugues I think you'll have a great time. If you are in rio maybe you can get away with not speaking it at all, but I wouldn't travel anywhere else besides sao paulo, and ilha grande probably. I recommend Ilha Grande 100% if you are there for holiday
