Americans have an unprecedented capacity for turning their cities into absolute shitholes. Even the nicest of them have just been turned into themepark tourist cores ringed by highways cordoning them off from ghettos where you have a better chance of getting shot than Kabul. All the rich, white locals live in brainmelting suburbs 45min by highway away and the people living in the urban cores are either transplants or in complete poverty.

Nationally it is true. I feel like people don't realize how expensive even bad neighborhoods in most cities are now and how many shitty apartments complexes and rundown stripmalls there are in the suburbs. Either that or they the see a ghetto and think it must be urban even if it's suburban.
How is it not true for Nashville? Nashville's core is a small downtown touristy area centered around broadway and bordered by the freeway and the river. The area surrounding the downtown freeway loop is largely urban and full of crime. The suburbs lay outside of this where the Opryland resort and that mall are for example but the mall is still full of brown "people" because they're attracted to malls.
I don't know why they let our major cities get like this, but that's the way it is. The worst is when road construction or a crash forces you to traverse any part of that ghetto. The outskirts of the ghetto might have some iconic or classic business like a restaurant. Usually touristy and in a barricaded lot with its own armed security force.
