Find an acceptable place to live that is also within a 30 minute bus ride from a slum/low income area. You will get a feel for it.

It has the malls, the major banks, an airport, reliable wifi, condo buildings, plenty of hotels, a beach, trekking/waterfalls nearby, a white sand island (camiguin), bunch of universities , white water rafting, water park, bars, etc....it's basically the capital of northern Mindanao.....people come for work/school the same way people travel to Manila/Cebu
2. Not to many Muslims, but just enough that it's a little spicy/edgy. Feels safe
3. Minimal foreign presence. Of Course anywhere you go in the Philippines you're gonna see at least 2 random boomers, but their isn't a concentration like their are in places like Manila/Cebu/Dumaguete.
