Going to visit Playa del Carmen with a group of friends. Can any Mexican bros or pp who's visited the place suggest any interesting things to do or places to visit in the area?
Not a fan of just laying on the beach drinking...beautiful places and historical landmarks are the things I'm mostly looking for.
Also i've read that Playa del carmen is relatively safe for tourists, but are there any areas or activities to avoid? Like is acquiring dude weed lmao safe or not?

Don’t buy drugs from anyone on the street. Best case is you get the shittiest weed you’ve ever seen. Tequila is cheap - drink instead of weed.
Playa is a nice place and safe everywhere within 1 mile of 5th Avenue.
The recent violence in Mexican tourist resorts has been caused by street drug dealers battling over turf. Speaking from experience as a 420 lover who has smoked his fair share of illegal Mexican weed, I do not recommend buying weed in Mexico. Not only will you be ripped off as a gringo tourist, but you will have to deal with human scum in the process of buying the weed.
Otherwise, general safety considerations are all you need in Mexico. Mugging and pickpocketing are not really a concern in Mexico, even for a solo traveler. Don't disrespect the locals. Also, watch out for the police. Especially in PdC, they are known to target drunk tourists for extortion in the wee hours of the morning.
Mexican weed is actually quite decent, as Mexico has an excellent weed-growing climate. Damn shame the Mexican Congress hasn't gotten their act together and properly legalized it. Weed from Oaxaca or Guerrero sells for $20/ounce wholesale, but the less you buy, the more you pay.
That being said, if you want to smoke weed in Mexico..
1) rent a bunk or room at a 420-friendly hostel
2) ask the staff to buy weed for you. They will, and you will probably get a better deal than you would get on the street. I paid 250 pesos (about $13 USD) for about 5 grams of weed at a hostel in Oaxaca - dude was a stoner who swiped a gram out of each bag he sold to a guest. Picrel

Damn, this must be new. Last two winters I traveled Mexico and saw vape shops in most cities. They even stocked contraband THC cartridges for $50 USD - the same carts sold for $20 USD in Colorado. It was a legal grey zone, as the carts contained THC but were not actually "marijuana".
Vaps were banned by idiotic AMLO. But peoole sells and bus vapers anyway.
Take a cab to Akumal or Puerto Morelos for good snorkeling, or a cab to Cenote Azul and surrounding cenotes which is near Akumal.
Take ADO bus to from PDC to Tulum and spend a day seeing ruins and hippy instagram thots taking selfies.

I was just there three months ago. Its Mexican Disney land the government puts a lot of effort to keep those amerifat bux coming. Take the ADO from the airport to PDC its about $15, buses are air conditioned and nice. Walk past the annoying manlets screaming at you for car rental or taxi and right when you exit customs terminal and are outside the ADO station is directly on your right. Since you're a weed degenerate you may also be a vapeBlack person so I'll warn you Mexico completely banned all vaping this year and its illegal to even possess a vape pen in the country.
Quintana Too (the province Cancun Airport is in) also passed a travel tax you're supposed to pay any time you fly out of the airport called Visitax. Its been in effect since 2020 and they don't automatically bill you on your ticket you're supposed to pay it separately. They didn't check for my receipt when I was leaving that I paid it but it is Mexico which means all rules are enforced just when they feel like it but letting you know it is supposed to be a thing.

No but PDC is small and there isn't a lot there yet a lot of tourists go so they treat you like a piñata. I think Cozumel is better.
CDMX is huge, so some parts of the city are gross while others are nice. And when its dirty, it feels natural, because that's just how a city gets when its big and poor and polluted.
PdC is supposed to be this amazing tourist resort, so it feels weird when I can't even walk on the beach without gagging from the smell.The town streets are clean but there's really nothing to do there except get drunk. Such a scam.
Ok there are grifter girls but whenever I walk into bar loco or santinos I get usually cute women who are just there from some tragic breakup and are down to meet and have fun. The bimbos you see walking around arent the majority.
Tribe on the beach is a chill well located hostel, but has very few people often 50 year olds living there but occasionally women.

There’s a guy on airbnb who has an experience called “bob marleys smoke up” or some shit and he will deliver pretty decent weed to you in PDC. Anything you buy on the street will be shit (worse than anything in USA) and you risk being extorted by the cops. If you’re at an all inclusive be upfront with your waiter that you want good weed. Be prepared to pay more than you’re used to no matter where you buy.
There’s no real unsafe areas of PDC. Stay east of the highway after dark and you’ll be good. If you’re male, alone, and walking away from a club/bar after midnight there’s a pretty decent chance the cops will extort you so don’t keep a lot of cash or a debit card with you (they’ll march you to the ATM), especially close to 5th Ave. stay around groups of people and the cops won’t bother you - they get you when you walk down a street with no one around.
Go to Puerto Morelos for snorkeling. Just take a cab (or the locals bus if you’re cool) to la playa in puerto Morelos and they take you on a fantastic snorkeling trip. It was $25 for 2-3 hours last time I went, snorkel gear included.

If you are willing to send money on a resort check out Xcaret and its multiple parks such as the cave exploring Xcaret Fuego or the illusion park Xenses.
Take the ferry to Cozumel. Rent a scooter there. Explore the town a bit, then go for a loop of the island. The Archaeological site of San Gervasio is really cool. It was pretty much empty when I went (Early December).
No tourists shitting up the place, no hawkers and dudes trying to sell you overpriced garbage like in Chichen Itza, you can spend a couple of hours exploring the ruins and since no one is there you can climb the pyramids and enter the off-limits areas.
Circling the island on scooter is also fun, especially the East/South-East coast. Tons of cool beachside bars and restaurants, the view is awesome. Back in Playa the food is very hit and miss + expensive so I recommend moving away from Quinta and heading out further west and north into town and eating at taquerias and markets.
There's a bar on the corner of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Constituyentes which I'd say is the best bar in the tourist area by far. It's up on a balcony and the beer is the cheapest from what I have seen. Good atmosphere, it's where everyone that has been there a while tends to gravitate to. The clubs are fricking shit and full of hookers.
I just roamed around town and had fun exploring. The night market is fun although kinda small.
Playacar also has some ruins that might interest you, but they are quite simple compared to those on Cozumel or Chichen Itza. Ideally you'd head out to the cenotes and see those too.
As far as colonial architecture is concerned, PDC isn't really the place for that.
Take a daytrip to Valladolid for that.
The area is safe if you don't go looking for trouble like a moron. Even then I think they cut you some slack because you're a tourist, since I saw a bunch of drunk Canadians harass a bunch of hookers on Quinta and they didn't get into any trouble. PDC is a cash cow for some cartel or another, and they don't want to spook the tourists away so they keep the area relatively safe for them.

I think pdc sucks personally and the only reason I go there is because the dental clinic I like is there and its where I get/got all my work done for 1/8th the price of AmeriBlack person dentist ripoffs. Food prices are fricking nuts like barely cheaper than USA so you know those guys are making an insane killing. I think if you cross the highway and go way out of the tourist area supposedly you get more realistic Mexico food prices but I have never had time to.
