americans provided north korea with hundreds of thousands of tons of food aid at the time lol. probably would have received more food, too, if it weren't for the missile chimpouts.

I would be amazed if that worked. Most North Koreans are at least sort of grossed out by interracial marriage, and they don’t have enough exposure to western pop cultural icons to find white folks attractive. They’re pretty trad, but the kind of trad that wouldn’t want to date a honky. They even had to procure European or other foreign wives for their handful of successful defectors rather than let them interbreed with Koreans.

Also, as far as I know, the hookers there are all Chinese.

Not anytime soon, at least not before really big structural and economic changes I don’t yet see coming. I know a lot about the DPRK, including having worked with North Koreans, and am confident that the authorities are too anxious about potential spies and enemies of the state getting in (not quite without reason) to loosen their grip in any big way. Freer tourism doesn’t give them anything they want, unless solo travel visas cost a million bucks apiece.

    >Coming soon: North Korea Digital Nomad Visa! Five million dollars. Includes coworking space at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs!

Kim family currently have no male heir. Of that fat frick dies, the throne will either be taken by his sister or his daughter. No matter who will take it, the country will change (because, woman). So, if it happens peacefully, sooner than you think. If not, never (because NK will end up a nuclear wasteland for at least 10,000 years.

Could be, sure. But I’ve been paying attention to that benighted place for a long time, and people have been thinking collapse or reform or opening or change from within ANY MINUTE NOW, convinced that they’re right, for forty years.

Part of the problem is that there’s an expansive military-bureaucratic apparatus that depends on the maintenance of the status quo for survival, and it’s got tendrils all through society, from ancient soldiers at the top to farm managers at the grassroots, everyone clinging to a patron above or on the next bench. There’s a lot of fear of rocking the boat, much more widespread than it seems from without, and pervasive but little-acknowledged terror of how bad real change could be in the short-to-medium term. People used to like to make an analogy to the reunification of Germany when talking about Korean reunification, but the development, wealth, and ideology gaps between the Koreas are orders of magnitude more profound. Any big transitions are going to be traumatic and expensive and take decades.

I do agree that change is inevitable. But I won’t be at all surprised if the Kim dynasty survives at least one or two further generations. Either the sister (who probably has two kids of her own, one or more of whom could be a boy), or a still-unborn future crown prince. KJU may be a fat frick, but he’s still pretty young, and both his father and grandfather hung in there for literal years while in dramatically failing health.

It will be interesting to observe how things change if a woman did take control, as unlikely as that may seem—if nothing else, the national narrative about women has evolved a little since Kim Jong Il snuffed it. KJI’s wives and concubines were practically state secrets, where Ri Sol Ju has been an at least slightly public figure. Korea wonk friends and colleagues of mine have been interested to see how she’s become the inaugural First Lady of the DPRK in some modest but recognizable ways.

you are better off getting a chinese tour from Dandong than going with a tour organised by the white guy fronted companies. chinese tour gets you a special one on one korean stooge who speaks english who you can get to know and might do favours, instead of just being one of many being corralled on the westerner tour with weird germans and other weird white people.

you could actually do unguided tours in the country starting from march19 this year, catch is that you have to register at the Chinese border. However its only limited to the neighbouring province of whichever point of entry you applied for the permit at.

That's the meme, you dip. You don't know, because you can't go (right now). North Korea and the North Sentinel Islands are the only 2 places I can think of which can't be realistically visited.
