IF you can get a visa for your irish passport, you can get in and out. Big if though, they aren't handing them out. Also they might randomly imprison you for being an American spy, as soon as they learn you have an American passport during the background check.

They won’t arrest you for visiting their country lmao. Russia makes money off tourists.

They would only arrest you if you work a full time job in russia or you work in a government job otherwise they dont give a frick about you coming to Russia

You really think Russia of all places can't check what your citizenships are or where you've lived? Even ignoring any sort of spying, you can buy data from companies who track basically everyone on earth. American credit companies will sell you anything, and you can even search names for free. Anyone posting here could easily search up any individual's background within 5 minutes here. Russia surely has an even easier search system for that data for the immigration control.

why would the usa send russia a database of their passports? any country in the world can issue passports to who ever they like and they dont have to notify anybody about it.

                Anonymous

The US has so many foreigners working for it that there's no way they can possibly protect sensitive data.

You don't really think all these big companies and government offices that get "hacked" every week are really getting hacked by outsiders, do you? It's employees just copying the data or finding backdoors from the inside.

People need to stop thinking life is a movie and stop watching fear mongering mutt media. No one is going to care. Millions of people enter and leave Russia. You think they are going to be checking EVERYONE?! No. Impossible. If you get in trouble with the police officers or FSB then yeah I'm sure they can find your American passport but don't be acting like a Black person when you're in Russia or any other country. this is a basic rule of travelling.

            Anonymous

As I wrote before, yes, they check EVERYONE. From the UK, from the US and from Ukraine. So you may be okay going through with an Irish passport, but if they want to have a random check you go to a little room at the airport where they make you wait while they run background checks. You then get interviewed. Lying and saying "no, I only have Irish passport" is asking for trouble. They may not catch you on it, but if they do it's not gonna be fun. I have to do this everytime I come across the border.

And every western tourist is being checked by the MVD now anyway, regardless of where you're from. So if you come in on a second passport and they realise it, they may talk to you when you leave.
It's not fear mongering. I'm the one that's been saying to come. But it's reality at the moment.

back to the topic, I was in St. Petersburg recently, hotels were surprisingly expensive, 4000-5000r for a half-decent ones
food was very cheap, you can eat well for 500-1000r

I know it because that's their current policy.
They don't track down and interview you. That's what they do at the airport. For the others they just run background checks and if something comes up they will talk to you on exit.
Russia is at war. If you think there aren't such procedures in place you are a classic brain-dead finn. And for finns, yeah, the border crossing is the same, because literally they don't give a shit about you

isn't that the same as everywhere else? but why would "something come up" unless you are a spy? and wouldn't they make the background check when you apply for a visa, regardless of nationality? that way they can stop you at the entry before you can make damage

                >because literally they don't give a shit about you

I literally travelled there during the war. I was also there in 2016 during the FIFA games. First time I used my canadian passport and the second time I used my venezuelan passport. Venezuelan passport shows Canada as my birth place but the customs official did not give two shits. In fact he literally didn't say anything to me, not even a "passport, please". Currently in Vietnam living as a digital nomad and I'll be in China next month. Suck my dick homosexual.

I think the Venezuelan passport is so shit it cancels out the fact that your birthplace is Canada. Like the immigration guys will say "not even a spy would use a Venezuelan passport", so it removes suspicion. Especially now that Russia is trying to stylise itself as Home For The Blacks, which you are.
Different if it's a US and Irish passport.

seethe more homosexual. This Venezuelan passport has done me wonders. During covid Korea blocked all Canadians from entering so I had to use my Venezuelan passport. I also have a third nationality passport that I sometimes use. I try not to use the Canadian passport because losing that thing means I have to go through Canadian bureaucracy and LatAm bureaucracy is actual faster than that expensive frozen Canadian shithole.

Seriously not worth the risk. Russia has been trying to use arrested Americans as leverage for years already, and it's only worse now. You don't have to be somebody famous, like that WNBA troony with the pot vape, to end up in a Russian prison sewing uniforms for the vatnik invasion squad.

Weed is cheap as shit in Russia itself. You can buy a gram for like $3.50 USD. The fact they sentenced someone to 7 years in prison for a vape, and then subsequently released them to get back an Arms dealer shows how little they actually give a frick about the application of the law.

Russians on the street traditionally had a positive to neutral view on western civilians, despite the inverse not being the case. That has recently changed obviously given racism against Russians has been made acceptable, however most are still aware that westoids are not their government, and if you come off as respectful and courteous, they will treat you with the same. Russians appear abrasive and cold to westoids because they don't smile at strangers, however this is because smiles are reserved for friends, as opposed to the American take McDonald's can I get you anything with that smile.

Better use your irish passport, you will be naturally treated with suspicion as an American, again, respect, they might give you some grief but when they realise you're harmless, they should leave you alone.

I wouldn't recommend you go without a basic understanding of the culture and a fair grasp of the language, it's not like the rest of Europe where most speak English, you will have a hard time getting around.

OP clearly stated his intention to visit major Russian cities, not remote Siberian towns near military bases. Not only are Moscow and St Petersburg cosmopolitan and heavily visited, but a generic Irish dude wouldn't stand out until he tries to speak English. Even then, I seriously doubt Russians on the street would react negatively to a white foreigner who is visiting Russia, simply because some foreign governments hate Russia. Chances are, politics won't even be brought up.

This is really interesting if true, because I read a recent memoir of traveling along the Amur River in Russia and seeing the Chinese side exploding with lights and activity compared to the sleepy, suspicious Russian side. History of conquest and reconquest is rich in that area.

You basically need a Russia bank card and open a Russia bank account and then find a way to wire money from your bank to the Russian bank or deposit rubles that you brought with you. Flight wise you would have to fly through Istanbul then to Russia. A lot of Russian tourists go to Turkey so there's a ruble exchange place probably in IST.
I can't find the video but someone posted it here and it was some guy who was traveling there as a Westerner there post-war and he was explaining everything you had to do. You also need to buy a Russian simcard if you want your phone to work. It's like traveling to Cuba with more financial hurdles because the entire West has sanctioned Russia atm.
This isn't the video but related

I am British and I live in Moscow. You can apply for a tourist visa as usual it will just take longer. Fly through Istanbul is the best compromise on time/money. If you're a israelite and have time on your hands it's cheaper to cross the border through the Baltics. Flying through Serbia is another choice. Taking cash is the only way -- it's hard now to open a bank account as a foreigner, but you might have luck in country with tinkoff for example. Otherwise you could maybe get a card in a third country that uses MIR. If you have problems once you're here there's a good expat network that can help you out. Moscow is not cheap -- I spend about £600-700 in a two bedroom flat not far from the center, excluding vices. And prositition is illegal but nobody cares, it's everywhere. Cost from £50-300 for an hour if you're into that. Moscow is very safe, even as a foreigner unless you start being belligerent and loud. Be respectful, keep your head down and you'll be fine. Better if you know some russian, but most people in service roles in the center know English and it was mandatory for metro staff for example when it was the world cup. Now people might just not want to talk English though.
Outside Moscow, can recommend Karelia, Kamchatka, the Caucasus and Altai for nature. Most cities aren't worth it, st Pete's is okay for a short trip.

      Anonymous

One more thing -- keep in mind the "b-but I'm American" card doesn't work anymore. You will get shit if you get on trouble. Nobody will let it slide because you're from the west like they might in other countries. I.e., there's zero tolerance for bullshit from western tourists now. Which is great imo.
Some police, border guards are looking for any excuse to get you too. Not all. But some. Oh, and you'll be held at the border for 1-3 hours and questioned. On arrival and possibly departure. You should have everything straight. They won't ask anything too weird and they'll ask what you think about the SMO -- you just have to say hail Putin etc. They will interrogate you in English if you ask.

Imagine going through all this trouble and humiliation to ... enter russia?

I honestly don't understand people who try this. Why would you? For everything that russia potentially offers, there are cheaper and safer alternatives. I guess some people just can't help themselves.

          Anonymous

Why's it humiliating for you? Russia is at war and they should have counter espionage. Although I'd agree, coming as a tourist is great but now might not be the best time. I don't see why someone would choose now specifically to travel here. I wouldn't say it's humiliating though. It's more like an official immigration process. And is essentially what Europe and the US have made russians do to get visas for decades.

Is it possible to meet a woman in a provincial city who speaks English? I'd imagine very hard

I love the look of Russian women so much man. I wanna actually date them not pay for a session

Not easy. Unless you hang around universities maybe. If you like the look, just go to a russian or East European club or classes in your home city, you'd have more luck probably. But dating them can be difficult anyway

            Anonymous

Moreover, I wouldn't recommend any kind of international relationship unless you're ready to permanently emigrate. Especially between a russian and a westerner. It is so hard. A normal relationship is difficult, now you have to add all this extra stress, especially if you're autistic which you probably are. So better to find someone in your own country. Unless you're rich that is and you can buy residency and are happy to spend money on travel back and forth. Oh and good luck getting a job in Russia without the language

How are the women? Are they friendly?

      Do they speak English?

        Anonymous

Most people are not friendly initially. There is a much harder shell to people, but once you're "in", you've made a friend for life. Women can be very cold. But it all depends. If you're a scum sex tourist, better to go to a provincial city where you can still use your foreigner card to get women. Most Muscovites have basic English, but they won't be confident. I'd say 70-80% of people in general do not have good enough English for a normal conversation

Because the Ruble is worth less then the dollar it makes trading with them a better option then with the US, it's litteraly how China conquored the American export war (Chinese Yuan 's worth is purposely lowered by Chinese for this very reason)

Meanwhile the West is suffering with the "economy" being upheld by a small percentage of welathy peoples and debt with a dying middle class and surging working class
